  1. It does tend to be worse when the weather is cooler and as it gets darker. I never really thought about why (anyone know?), but I've definitely observed it to be true.

Weird. I await responses to this as well.

My guess is that it has to do with the fact that greyhounds don't have a lot of body fat and are sensitive to temperatures. Most of 'em drag along in the heat. On a hot day, I can barely drag Turbo around the block. Let the temp dip into the 50s and he acts like a young colt. I think the darker thing is more coincidental - with fall comes cooler temps and shorter days - and I don't think it affects behavior as much as the temperatures do. It's just easier to run around in cooler weather than the heat, so I think they're just friskier and as such, can get into trouble. Of course, Turbo's kind of a jerk year round (think drill sargeant attitude), but he's a much more *active* jerk in the cooler temps :P

  2. Thank you for posting this. When someone on our adoptor's group site asked about muzzling, Kennelmom's husband (who adopted one of their dogs from our group) posted to us about a nasty pack attack suffered by one of their senior girls - I'm sure that story is also on GT somewhere. There are countless stories of play groups gone bad when unmuzzled dogs start to go at each other. Hopefully someone else will learn from your story. It only takes a split second. :(

Hope your baby heals up quickly!

  3. I will have to check on the K state study. Since it is so contradictory to Antech, I bet it's old.

Dr. Couto saw pictures and I believe emailed with dog's vet and may have come upon the conclusion from pictures and test results.

After reading this thread last night, I surfed a bit and found references to the Kansas study and the study cited was from 1993. I think that Antech thing is from 2003 (I saw that as well).

  4. I always thought that Alabama rot was a food-borne illness, but I'm probably way off.

Perhaps he got bit by a spider or something and had an allergic reaction?

Hopefully others can offer more info...Hope your boy is back to normal soon!

  5. I just saw the other thread about this incident. I'm sitting here crying. I'm so, so sorry for the loss of these pups and the pain the owners are going through. Absolutely devastating. :cry1 :cry1 :cry1

  6. Is there a way that folks can specify what the pet is that they are matching if it's not a greyhound? I got my match, but I don't know if it's a dog, cat or what. The member's greyhound's name does not match with the name of the pet that I got (at least according to her siggie), so I'm stumped!
