Still figuring that out but think if you don't have to might not be wise. I think people do it in part to avoid the mess of coming in heat.

wdpam, i think all of us over 60 have memory cancer- benign, we don't ever remember that we have it!!!
I asked a fairly well respected vet the question and received this answer _
"If you spay a female dog (or cat) b4 she EVER comes in heat, she will never get mammary cancer, which is the most common cancer of female dogs, just like in people. It is fairly protective to spay after one heat but after that the protection factor fizzles out. Obviously a dog spayed at any age won’t get a pyo.As long as they are responsible (and smart) owners who will not let her get bred (you’d be surprised at what “smart” people think will work), they will probably choose to take a small risk and wait". -
Could we get a pupdate on the handsome boy and your progress?
You might not want to hear it but if you have fenced yard maybe get him a buddy (could be a foster). They keep each other busy and wear each other out.
This from a woman that used to have 6-8 greys at once and 4-6 of them fosters that were 12-15 months old. In retrospect I don't know how I lived through it but in a way it was easier than this one 6 month old boxer mix.... -
The is a what amounts to a vigilante vet tech on one of my neighborhood forums that insists that all dogs must be spayed before 6 months to make sure they never come into heat and that not doing so greatly increases the chance of pyometra, as well as memory cancers in dogs that were spayed late or not at all" .
I was always told large breeds should wait until at least nine months for growth plates to close. I am fuzzy on the whole thing (especially what in the heck a memory cancer would be - a mammary cancer cousin?)
Would welcome any information. Thanks. -
I am so sorry Connie.
Between Harlan Goebel (Gable prefix) and the Harlan's of Slatex in Texas Harlan would be the ultimate greyhound name.

"CARNEYS POINT, N.J. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning pet owners not to feed their animals any Performance Dog frozen raw pet food due to Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono) concerns.
The FDA announced Thursday that two samples of food collected from Bravo Packing, Inc.’s manufacturing facility tested positive for harmful pathogens. One sample of Performance Dog raw pet food lot 072219 tested positive for Salmonella and L. mono. The other sample of beef raw pet food tested positive for Salmonella, but the product had not yet been distributed."

Poodle had a severe case with arching back vomit. He had to be on low fat food from then on.
I flat out told my vet that I wasn't feeding Hills and their cellulose (which can be sawdust, peanut hulls, cotton or any plant fiber). He lived many years on Natural Balance Ultra Light - their Fat Dog formula will also work for pancreatitis.

I worked long hours with a commute in Chicago pre greys. I paid a responsible teenage neighbor to check in Morgan during the middle of my sometimes 10 hour+ shift plus commute. It eased my mind. Look around your neighborhood.

For long trips I used dog beds and pillows to fill in the well and tossed a comforter over the whole thing.

Unfortunately yes. Many thoughts coming your way.

Never in my life would I feed Merrick. Garth owns five dead livestock removal services in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico under the name of Tejas Industries. and has an on site rendering plant. Decades ago he made his fortune selling Beef n' More to Wal Mart by the trainload. .. At one time Wal Mart sold Beef n More canned for .54 and Merrick for $1.99. Identical ingredients except for peas vs. green beans. I actually spoke to a supervisor at the site in Hereford who assured me it was the same beef in both.

Some dogs will drink Pedalyte - especially the orange. Toilet water is enhanced thus tastier. Sort of like mud puddles

Harley's racing name was Tweed Prince. Thank goodness I knew his trainer Don or I'd have gone blue in face trying to get him to answer to Prince.

I have 20 here from 17.5 pound bags.

EARS UP!!! Priceless.
Can't see fries and dogs without thinking of Hershey.....what a feel good story. -
My Buck was very grey when I got him and he had just turned 4. I think early greying runs in the Molotov line.

All my dogs have answered to multiple names. Maggie answers to Maggie. Magsweet, Moo Moo, Meme, Girlie Girley and many others....including Poodle when I gat confused . -

I had an 11 X 7.5 Petsafe in a solid door with an 12" rise. Eighty pounds went through fine. The sliding ones have an 8.5 " rise., but I have seen dogs that learned to scooch down a bit (for lack of a better term).

Not one of well over a hundred including a galgo ever challenged my 4 ft.chain link...but an 7 year old brood mom could climb the corner of a wood privacy fence by going up the corner in a nanosecond.. I think height is relative.

think I bought mine from Perfect Memorials. My second greyhound Harley was $25 via the city.

Go buy a bag of Iams. The beet pulp does it. We wormed fecaled and tested Rex within an inch of his life. 24 hours on Iams and he was a new man.

Temperament coming off track . . .
in Training and Behavior discussion

Harley stepped off the hauler from Bluffs, walked into my living room and crashed. Buck came out of the kennel at Wichita and did the same. Absolutely no transition. Little Girl and Bella never raced and were absolute nutcases - which may be why they never raced. I have long preached the virtues of big boy hounds (says the woman who is sitting here with a girl carin and a girl boxer mix).
When I ran the adoption group I dealt with retired racers as well as lots of "beauty school dropouts" straight off the farms. Most of the latter were ~15 or so months old but some were older. I'd pick a dog fresh off the track every time. Having been fostered equating training is a crapshoot.
