    Greyhound Whining

    My dog will sleep in past 8am if he's wearing his fleece jammies! But I doubt he would have in the first few months of adjusting. If you've had your grey 3 weeks, he's only experienced 6 weekend days and 15 work days. He probably just needs time and a little work in trying to find the best way to set up your weekend.

    It’s not so much baldness as it is saliva stain. The hair on her butt and top of tail is grayish pinkish brown. The vet said today she keeps licking herself because she has dry skin. She gave me an antihistamine and some medicated shampoo. She does have areas where her hair is very thin from pulling it out. She looks pink. It seemed to be an anxiety thing but if it’s just dry skin, that would be a lot easier to cure!

     

    She’s biting her nails right now. Is that normal?

     

    Rogue gets that staining on occasion. Not so much the pink skin though.Just the hairs stiff and brownish from saliva on the side of his tail. I don't think it's allergies, as he doesn't have any other symptoms. When I catch him in the act, it's more like obsessive licking. Tends to go away for a few days after his anal glads are expressed. He also doesn't do it as much the more I exercise him so I think it's part boredom and part his grooming routine. And I'm going to keep getting his anal glands expressed every few months. He does clean his entire body at least once a day.

    I've read a lot of people saying stools get looser through the day. But I'm noticing something different with Percy. The more he goes in a short time, the looser it is. So he'll go in the morning, it's fine. But sometimes he'll either go, then wander around the yard and go again (and maybe even a 3rd or 4th time), or he'll often go out 10 or 15 minutes later and go again. The subsequent poops are looser and looser. Sometimes he's only squeezing out a drip--not sure why he bothers.

     

    Same later in the day. He'll go and it's fine, then go again (maybe twice on one walk, or goes just before a walk and goes again on the walk) and the second one is loose.

     

    So if I could just get him going mabye 2-3 times a day, spread out, it would be fine, but he'll go 2-3 times in a row and do that 3 times/day. It's like whatever poop is higher up in his colon and hasn't had as much time to sit around in there is loose. Anyone else have this?

     

    And will he settle into just going once each time, instead of 2-3 times in 10 minutes? We've had him less than two weeks. He's on Taste of the Wild high prairie (I think that's the one.) I use Olewo carrots (THANK YOU greytalk for telling me about this miracle supplement). I'm thinking of either switching him to TOTW Sierra, which is lamb and lower protein, or the IAMS green bag since a lot of people recommend it and it's half the price.

     

    Just going to state my observations with Rogue, I don't know the science behind it at all!

     

    He's on Fromm's Gold right now, and Olewo carrots in the PM meal. Poops 2-3 times a day, solid and small. If I take him for a walk at the park, he will poop at least 3 times (we walk for 30-60 minutes). First will be okay, second will be diarrhea, and any after that will be the strained squirts. Does not happen at all at home. I just assumed it's a combo of anxiety from being not at home, exercise, and wanting to mark over other dog/animal poop.

    Looking For A Trainer In South Central Pa

    I am looking for a dog trainer to train me, help me build my dog's confidence, and to experience new and group situations.

     

    I'm located in Lancaster county.

     

    I tried searching the CCPDT website but got overwhelmed and really would like a recommendation/reference by someone. I'm willing to travel up to two hours one way, but would prefer someone closer to an hour away so we could go more often.

     

    I'm a newbie with positive reinforcement and book reading can only do so much.

    Am I Feeding Her Too Much?

    I think different foods and dogs are of such a wide variety that you can only feed according the individual situation. I find it helps to look at photos of my dog versus just staring at him in person.

     

    Wow, a couple of you are feeding1.5 to 3 cups/day total for 70lb dogs. We just got our 70lb male and the rescue lady said to give 2 cups morning and evening and then after a day or two increase to 2.5 each feeding. I've been giving 2 cups in the morning (didn't increase since he doesn't always finish it) and 2.5 at night, which he finishes. When I was only giving 2 at night, he was looking for more. Is this ok? 4-4.5 cups total? I can still see his ribs. We've only had him 5 days.

    My dog's racing weight was 85lbs and he was about 78lbs when I adopted him 11 months ago. We've tried 4 different brands of food in that time. The amount of dry kibble has changed from roughly 3.5 - 4 cups per day depending on the food brand and his level of exercise. He's up to 81lbs now and I think he looks great and needs to gain more muscle than fat. We're on a slightly higher quality of food now so I'm actually feeding him a little less than before to maintain his current weight.

    Sleep Aggression When Considering A Greyhound? Newbie Here

    Rogue does not have sleep aggression, but we did have an adjustment period that I had to keep reminding myself about. For example, the first time I leaned down to "cuddle" him after a good belly rub, he growled at me. That was in the first week. I never had that happen again. When he figured out how to use the couch and would fall asleep on there, I accidentally woke him a handful of times and got a snarling face. So I cut him off from couch privileges for a month or so and now we have no couch issues. I've only had Rogue for 10 months, but he gets more and more settled as time goes on. Try not to obsess over the little things and just enjoy your hound!

    Rogue is food motivated depending on the treat, so you might have to try several varieties before you find what kind of treats Percy likes best. Rogue jumps up from whatever bed he's on when he hears me open the treat bin and sometimes I take him out as late as 10:30pm for last potty break. (He often puts himself to bed around 9pm haha!)

     

    As for the marking, I've always had a dog that marks a lot, female and male. So I guess I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me. You can definitely re-direct him when it's your shed etc. Try to time your correction to when he's angling his body versus while he's actively marking. I do notice that Rogue ends to mark a ton within the first 10 minutes of our walk if we go somewhere and then settles down and walks the rest of the way with only the occasional marking. He did come to me marking due to anxiety and now that he's more confident, it has died down. But if an unexpected stimulus comes up, like meeting a new dog, I just know that he'll have to go and mark something afterwards to build himself up again. If I keep him short on the leash, then he can't stop and smell things and is less likely to mark. And when I walk him with the 6ft leash, he can mark something and I don't have to break my walking stride at all.

    Tessa came right in and walked up the stairs like she'd been doing them her whole life. Some don't take any time at all to learn the stairs!

     

    This was Pal also, my first greyhound c. 2002. To get into our condo was 13 stairs. Neither of us gave it a thought (thankfully :lol ).

     

    I live in a upstairs apartment so Rogue had to do the stairs immediately. I had tested him out on a few outdoor steps at the place where I got him and he had no hesitation so when I got home with him my girlfriend and I had a "party on the stairs" and made it the best thing ever to go up the one and a half flights to the apartment. He's never had a problem with the home stairs, only at friend's houses with unfamiliar stairs has he struggled or flat out refused.

     

    Rogue came from the racing kennel to the adoption kennel to my home so he was not house broken and marked when he was nervous which was most of the time. I used the crate to potty train him so he spent his nights in the crate in my bedroom. He only howled the first night. In about two weeks he was house broken and the crate was retired soon after.

    To Switch Or Not To Switch

    I'm not dealing with allergies, but I did recently try a switch for other similar reasons(gassy, gurgles, butt chewing). Got Rogue and at the kennel they fed whatever people donated. Started on Zignature but he wasn't having firm poop unless I gave him a lot of Olewo carrots with each meal.

    Then we went to Nutro Essentials and I was much happier but he still was getting gassier than I'd like.

    So we tried 4health and immediately poop went runny.

    Switched to Fromms gold and I like it even better than Nutro so I'm glad I decided to see if there was something better. Less gas,I can feed a smaller portions so smaller poops!

    Large Hound For A Petite Woman? Leash Pulling/prey Drive Concerns

    I'm going to repeat what a lot of people have already said. Ask for a hound with low prey drive and take it on test walks before you adopt. (Keep in mind you can always train leash manners)

     

    I am 5'2", 115lbs, and in my 20s. I adopted a 80+lbs male greyhound last year. He has medium prey drive and came with wonderful leash manners. The only time I've been pulled over was on the side of a steep hill and I was raising the leash over my head at the same time that Rogue was doing his post-poop happy bouncing. I blame that fully on the hill and my leash management hehe! The only other times he's really pulled on the leash were due to spooking and I did not feel in danger of falling or even stumbling.

    Non Grey Puppy Not Eating Off And On

    My family adopted a 3 month old mix breed puppy from a shelter when I was a kid. She sometimes wouldn't eat and had digestive issues like vomiting and diarrhea but we didn't think it was happening often enough to worry and we were also not the best first time dog owners.

     

    A few months later, we were on vacation and the friend watching our dog was an experienced owner and ended up taking our dog to the vet for us and we found that my dog had an issue with her pancreas. (Possibly pancreatitis, but I was only 8 at the time so I don't exactly remember)

     

    This was just my one time experience but I think it's worth having some testing done to find out if there's an underlying issue.
