  1. I once had a dog, a berger des pyrennees and he was at the vets after a car accident. He ran into a driving car. Lucky him, just some minor bruises and scratches but he got x-rays and was very nice, stayed still, didn't try to bite, didn't even growl....

...than the doc sat him down, told us to go home and to take it easy. My dog walked up to him and bit him in his leg. I was so stunned. He kept his anger to himself and planned his attack. Strange dog - vet was clearly not amused. Since that day we always had to go to the other vet - his wife.

I know I shouldn't laugh... but just picturing that dog calmly walking up and biting the vet... :hehe

  2. Yeah, now that I know for sure, I'll tell vets in the future. Although he doesn't like being manhandled, he is a great blood donor so I was really surprised that he snapped at the tech just for an x ray. And this probably sounds stupid, but I was worried and didn't realize he had to be restrained like that for an X-ray, even though I work for a human doc. Just does to show you aren't thinking clearly at the e vet at midnight! I'm happy he didn't make contact.

  3. My husband took Jake to the dog park late last night (always when he's the only one there). It was pretty cold, but Jake never seems to mind. When he got back, Jake started coughing and acting like he was trying to vomit but nothing came up. Of course we thought of bloat as that is one of the main symptoms. We brought him in even though he seemed otherwise okay. Vet said it almost certainly wasn't bloat because of the way he was acting. They tried to do a chest x-ray, but Jake wasn't having it and tried to bite the tech. Then the tech reprimanded us for not letting them know he doesn't like being restrained (First of all, what dog does? Second of all, they didn't ask!) They did do a CBC and that was normal. He got a steroid shot and some hydrocodone cough medicine. Overall $260 (would have been $500 with x-ray) and one sleepy dog. He seems perfectly fine today. Vet thinks it is/was bronchitis. I hope that's the end of it!

  4. Poor baby! I'd be a worried mess too! When we first went to dog parks, Jake would also run until his hocks were bloody and raw- even after just a few minutes. We stopped going to the dog park, but not because of that. We can't trust him around high-energy dogs, and I don't trust the other owners. We do go to the dog park late at night if and when it is empty, and he has slowly stopped tearing up his feet. We also don't let him run for as long as he wants, because I think he would run himself ragged if we let him!

  5. Honestly I think this is good for pretty much any dog (or person). Jake is very calm, loves people, and would usually not be considered a "nervous" dog. However, I learned that he has limits like everyone. When we have parties at the house, such as a pool party that lasts all day, he will eventually seek quiet and has even growled at people petting him, which is so out of character. It's his way of saying that he's done for the day and we respect that. Great reminder!

Oh I'd love them to eat it whole, but then they drag it into my living room and dine on the carpet :riphair Even if I put down towels.. they drag it somewhere without towels, I seriously don't want to tarp my entire living room.. and I don't have outdoor space. Besides I really don't mind chopping meat with my cleaver, it's kind of therapeutic :) I don't mind the liver smell though.

Gambler's poop is so small now, it's amazing. However Holly had diarrhea this morning. I'm not saying it's not because of the new diet, but since she's been fine up until today, and Gambler is fine, not to mention if it was the raw chicken I'm inclined to think she'd be much more sick than just diarrhea (because she's other wise fine, not lethargic, not vomiting, still hungry, still thirsty, playing, etc).

I also happened to take Holly to the vet today for "female issues" and had to mention the diarrhea.. and of course had to mention to the vet that I started raw.. He was polite about telling me it was a bad idea.. then proceeded to tell me to use science diet.. even though corn ranks high on their ingredients..

If it makes you feel better, I told my vet cousin about our diet plan (raw chicken with liver and table scrap add-ins) and he said that sounded just fine. He didn't even reprimand me for giving Jake milk (OMG he LOVES milk!)

As for them dragging it all over... yes. I know it's gross, but our carpet sucks anyway and usually Jake eats it all in one bite. Usually...

  7. Good for you! Once they get used to the raw chicken, you may want to see if they will eat the thighs whole, only because it will cut down on prep time. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get Jake all of his nutrients without resorting to canned food a few times a week. He will only eat liver if it's cooked and that is a smelly mess...

It looks like you've already discovered the best thing about raw- less poop!

  8. Can anyone give me advise on my 4 year old greyhound. We have had him about a month and take him between 3-4 walks everyday. He is weeing in my house quite a lot. We tell him off and he knows he's done wrong but does it again. We are firm when we tell him off also. On occaisions we have even taken him outside and when he comes in he still has a wee. This is not all the time.

I'm sure other people will have more extensive advice, but I think you need to start training 101 again. Take him outside very often. Praise and treats when he goes outside. You reprimanding him when he goes inside probably doesn't help at all because he doesn't know what he's being yelled at for. It could even make him more fearful and therefore likely to pee. If he goes inside and you catch him at it, say no and lead him outside. Where again, you praise and treat. If you see a spot and didn't catch him, clean it up with an emzymatic cleaner (like Nature's Miracle) and move on. He will get the idea.

  9. I voted MyCanvas. Walmart's quality is too big of a question mark for me (and there are a lot of discouraging reviews online), and I think you get what you pay for. If a third option is on the table, Shutterfly has really impressed me quality-wise, they offer a ton of layouts (including the ability to add photos in date boxes), and they always have sales/promo codes available.

I voted for Walmart because when money is tight my vote goes to the cheaper one... but I second the Shutterfly idea. I have a calendar from them and it is stunning, with very thick pages.
