  1. Can you up his pain meds?

I called the vet and they did just that. I don't know why his reluctance to get up and snapping didn't register as "pain" in my head, but the vet upped his tramadol from 2 every 12 hours to 3 every 8 hours. I am hoping that helps.

Criminy, that break makes my leg hurt just looking at it.......poor Jake. No wonder he's hurting & grumpy. Just remember, the first week is the absolute worst,

it'll get better. I have no other suggestions for the potty issues, but whatever works, you'll deal because you love him.

I do have a funny story about that "after surgery fluid issue" if you'd like a chuckle to brighten your day............A few years ago when Skeeter (40 lb beagle mix)

was still alive, he had a dental (was 13 at the time, Desi/10). He was so out of it I had to carry him home, & like Jake, was so full of fluid & peeing so much it

was astounding. That night - midnightish - Desi had a disaster - clot in a rear leg - had to take him to OhioState Emergency. What to do with Skeeter? Couldn't

leave him, he was anxious as all get out & still getting rid of all that fluid. So I just took him with. Got to the emergency room, they came out with stretcher & got

Desi, I followed, carrying Skeeter. That poor little boy was still so out of it & full of fluid that he peed down my front while I was carrying him in. I cannot imagine

what those folks thought of me sitting in the waiting room crying my eyes out, reeking of dog pee. It wasn't funny then, but I laugh at that memory now.

Best wishes that Jake improves quickly.

This did make me laugh :hehe I had to wear heels to work today because Jake peed all over my flats... time for new shoes I guess! (my husband is home with Jake)

I have no idea why I was thinking he might be in a cast....

Well if he's peeing on his bed/spot, can you makeshift something waterproof first so you don't have to keep changing the bed? Maybe put his bed in a very large garbage bag and then top it with lots of pee pads, then blankets and towels?

Maybe line the whole under area (like the carpet within the xpen) he's sleeping in with pee pads too. The pee pads for the most part should keep the urine under control and I presume he won't be laying in a puddle that way either? I'd also guess as long as the wound isn't laying right in the pee, it's safe to just not change it until he decides to move. While he's standing just change everything up really quick?

The poor boy, I wouldn't blame him for not wanting to get up.

Yeah they wouldn't have been able to cast it without doing a cast over his hips. I think it's probably better for healing to be open, but it makes it rough for sure. We are trying to do what you recommended as far as pee pads, but those little things have a way of moving all around when he does get up. We're doing lots of laundry and keeping him clean as best we can. Dog urine will just be our new air freshener scent for awhile...

Wow! - Jake, you certainly went all the way with that one, buddy! Hope you are feeling better soon.

We don't do anything halfway around here! :flip I was in contact with his former trainer from the track, and we both were shaking our heads at the fact that he ran 180 races and broke a toe or two, but goes to the dog park and does THIS!

  2. Today has been kind of frustrating because he's just been peeing while laying down. He will sometimes try to get up but then just pee. We are trying to use pee pads, but he growls and tries snapping when we try to move him to change the pads. He is in a muzzle, but I do worry about hurting him. We are all just kind of frustrated. I'm worried about him laying in his own pee and that being unsanitary :( Anyone have any recommendations? I think at some point we are going to have to be a little tougher with him and make him get up, but he's still only 2 days out of surgery. He is getting up occasionally to change positions.

  3. Ouch, rough night indeed!! Yeah he's prolly peeing from all the meds and fluids and all those things. Do we get to see a pic of the poor chap?

Of course! I was posting everything to facebook because it's easier, but now Jake is resting and I'm on my laptop so I will put lots of photos of the process below.

Ah poor guy. I hate when meds do that to them. Maybe if you put pee pads in the bathroom your problem would be solved? I love pee pads. So glad he is doing well and resting good. He's such a good boy! :beatheart

We did that. He tends to move them around when shuffling to the bathroom, and has an uncanny way of missing them when peeing, but they are there :riphair

This was the leg before surgery:

    And this morning:

  4. First morning is going well, he's just sleeping. First night was pretty rough! He had to pee a TON. Like more than I thought it was possible to pee. He kept whining to the point of screaming because he wanted to go out. We finally took him out once and had to carry him back. We came to a solution when he went to our bathroom and peed on the floor there... Not carpeted so we'll take it. He just knows not to pee inside and he's trying so hard to be a good boy! The last time he was so out of it (ace) that he walked to the corner and peed all over the pillow I was using... But things are washable and he's not replaceable. Swelling and wound oozing are already improved.

  5. They said he is doing very well and we can take him home tonight! I am excited but also scared  I hope we can get into a groove and do the best we can for him. We won't have to leave him alone at all until next Monday, and then as long as he is doing well. He is my patient and I am determined that he will get better! :gh_bow

  6. Luckily we live in a single-story house, so he won't really have to do stairs or anything like that. We have that lift assist for bathroom breaks if needed. Otherwise I don't imagine will be taking him anywhere anytime soon Besides the vet

  7. I ended up buying a huge crate as well as a 36 inch X pen, and I ended up getting a lift assist because it was only $10 and I was already there. I am thinking we may end up using the X pen when we are home to monitor, and the crate when we are gone

  8. So now onto recovery.... I bought a huge crate and planning on getting an x pen. Any recommendations on the height? Also, would something like this work for a lift if needed?

Lorinda offered to let me use hers, but I will already be going to Ryan's so I might just pick this up if they have it. I am taking off work his first day home, and Jesse can take off the next day, then the weekend... then we'll see... Honestly I'm excited to get over this and start the recovery so he can be my silly boy again!

  9. He is out of surgery and they said everything went well. They were able to save the leg. We would have gone with amputation if we had to, but were hoping to avoid it. They are sending out pathology just in case. They couldn't get all of the fragments back together, so that leg may be just a little shorter than the other. This guy raced for 3+ years and yet he broke his leg running at the dog park! We hope to be able to take him home tomorrow night.

  10. Thanks for the replies. I thought about an x pen, but I think he is going to be a PITA about this confinement thing and I worry about him trying to jump- not right away but after he's feeling better! We got a HUGE crate. Sent radiographs to Dr. Couto, he said no evidence of thinning or cancer- something to be grateful for! Also said to try repair if surgeon thinks he can do it. He looked at them over a layover- class act!

  11. Not much to update- they couldn't do the surgery today because the surgeon was booked and we looked into moving him to a different place but we couldn't find anywhere else to do it before the morning. we got him some Amicar to reduce bleeding and swelling, which is obviously a concern. we visited him and he is stable, very out of it but did know who we are. they said he kept trying to get up unless they sedate him heavily. that's Jake! We still haven't spoken to the surgeon, but they are talking like they will want to plate it. We ordered an extra large crate, since we don't have one, and are planning for a long recovery no matter what happens . Thank God for pet insurance!

  12. Dr. Couto is such a wonderful person. I sent him the low res screenshot of the fracture, which is all I have, and got an out of office. However, he responded right away that he couldn't tell much from the photo except that it wasn't in an area usually associated with osteo and he'd be happy to do a consultation with better images.

  13. Osteo is of course a huge concern, but he was running full speed and hit... Something. I think a bench. It happened quickly and was dark out, but there was only a bench and a tree in the way. Does anyone know the turnaround time for Dr. Couto?

  14. I posted this on Facebook, but now it's 3 am and I can't sleep. Jake broke one of his rear femurs last night. We were at the dog park, late as it always is so that we can be alone. It was on his first run and I think he ran into a bench. We were initially worried about some bleeding, but then he refused to put any weight on it. It's a really bad break, the x rays are just sickened- multiple pieces. They don't know if they can save the leg. The surgeon is calling us in the morning. My silly boy was still trying to jump off the exam table! I just want him to be his goofy self again and I'm so worried. I asked about cancer and the vet said it didn't look like it. He did say the bone looked thin, maybe from a nutritional imbalance, which makes me feel like it's all my fault. I'll take any thoughts or prayers or good juju that you have to spare... I know sometimes it can feel silly top write good thoughts for someone you've never met, miles away, but already your kind words on Facebook have helped me feel better. I know you guys can appreciate how scared I am. End of 3 am rambling...

  15. You might try something for his little brain. If you have no problem with confetti in your living room, you can wrap treats in newspaper-paper and let him unpack them. I make some of these packages with treats and some without.

My boys love this play but my living-room looks like parade went through it afterwards. But then again my vacuum cleaner doesn't mind.

I tried this once- he was too lazy to work to open the paper so I ended up opening them :flip He will do puzzles and I made a snuffle mat.

  16. He seems to be a very polite young man. You just don't jump on somebody, especially not when they are sleeping and you can't see where they are.

A little light may help but perhaps he needs the permission to get into your bed again. Than you either close the door and keep him in your room or you learn to interact with him half asleep.

Paddy used to go out in the middle of the night but he came upstairs again, racing along the hallway and jumped on the bed.....80 pounds of pure energy and muscle. Good morning....

You are his pack leaders. It is a breech of etiquette for him to jump up on your bed without an invitation if you are on it. It is an honor thing-he is submitting to your 'authority' even though you don't want to exercise it at 0300 hehe. JMO.

This is true, and I'm glad he doesn't jump on top of us in the middle of the night. However, I think we will try teaching on and off so that DH doesn't actually have to get up. That is the biggest problem. Last night he slept through the whole night... except he barked in my face for 5 minutes at 10:30 before bed! He has turned into a high-energy dog! We do more with him and tire him out on the weekends, but then he isn't satisfied with a good 45 minute walk during the week! Need more ideas for stimulation... I might try a laser pointer in the yard!
