Adoption done. Verdasco and the adopters seem very happy with each other. They shower him over love and attention. He's getting more attention than he did since we had 3 others vying for attention. They have been buying him some nice things and a nice bed. They spent the first night worried about him, but HE slept through the night. No sign of any separation anxiety.

UPDATE: For all of you that were so helpful and gave encouragement. We took Verdasco to the Vet Specialist and he was amazed at the progress. He says if he doesn't get any better he will be fine, BUT we are working to help him get better. He walks up to 2 miles now, without his boot. He still needs to build up his atrophied muscle in the back, but the walks are really helping. NOW for the really great news, there is a couple that really want to adopt him. They fell in love with him the first time they met him. At the home visit they played with him and gave him a LOT of love and attention. They are willing to continue his rehabilitation and they really seem like a great fit. Just waiting for the final approval for the adoption We are really sad to see him go, we've had him for 6 months and have become very attached to him. We thought with his injury we would be keeping him, but the potential adopters will be a good loving home for him.

Went to Canine Rehab today (finally) We have a list of exercises for Verdasco.. The Thera paw boot is helping build up the muscle, he can walk 2 to 3 miles with the boot.. We have a little more hope now than before, as he walks with his paw flat without the boot sometimes. It will take some practice on the exercises. It is a whole new world for us. Heck, I don't exercise except the walks. We may have to walk Verdasco alone sometimes, because with the four wanting to pull, We can't do what we need to do.

Maybe he is home. I really love this pup. But then I love the new foster OZ. I can't keep them all (can I?) I pushed beyond the 2 miles we were walking to see how he did. He could have gone further, BUT I couldn't. We have so many coming from the track now, it is going to be hard. When i go to the track to pick up dogs, I can't stand to leave even ONE behind in the retirement kennel. We are really getting desperate for foster homes now and there is a bunch of dogs waiting at the track I am doing as many SHow and Tells as I can and just did 2 full days at the Pet Expo.. I have 4 more S & Ts in the planning stages I can't get to until the end of May or June. Now it looks like some people are forcing the close of the nearest US track and there are already over 100 dogs that need homes from there. . I thought i was retired.

We walked 3 miles yesterday and Verdasco was up front almost all the way. We are so pleased to see him out and enjoying life. We use it only on walks, around the house he is fine. . He was the only dog in the car at the time he chewed the straps, I think if we need to travel in the car with him in the boot, a muzzle would be a good idea. We only put it on him when we did because it was easier to put it on him where we were instead of the vets office parking lot or the waiting room. To drive for 5 minutes we thought we were safe Lesson learned Verdasco is a really great dog. He does try really hard to please. The hard part will be if he gets better and adopted. He will be VERY hard to give up if we have to.. The specialist vet says it could take up to 6 months. It has been over 1 month now. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and comments.

The specialist vet says it can take up to 6 months for something like this to heal.( now been a month) He is optimistic, So now I am. We are trying the rehab vet again. He is sending a text and information to the Canine Rehab again so see if we can make a connection. The Boot is nice so he can walk with the other dogs. Verdasco has been chewing the straps. Luckily I ordered extra. We put the boot on and drove less than 10 minutes and he had already chewed through one strap. I am thinking of wrapping the straps with duct tape hoping that will slow him down.

Thank you, Update: Verdasco's boot is helping on the walks. He will go all the way with the others, so far up to 2 miles. He does walk with his paw down if I walk slower than usual.but of I go to fast he starts to hop again. He will stand on his leg with the boot. He has had some muscle wasting on his hind end muscle hopefully the walks will help build him up some now. We can't leave it on him for too long. He has chewed one of he straps and we had to order some new ones. We don't see a lot of improvement with out the boot. I am still hopeful but it is getting harder to be optimistic. We are going to the specialist again on Monday. The therapist the Specialist recommended has not shown much interest, we have called many times and left messages, with no response. We will see what the specialist says to determine the next action. Verdasco has a great personality. He really tries to do all the other dogs do. .We probably will keep him since not many want a 'broken" dog. Since I got in trouble with the group, (some tyrants don't like to be pushed to do better, be courteous, or not rude. ) I am not sure what support we will get from them anymore.

Well we found foster homes and other groups that would take the 40 pups. Now the problem is the racing kennels were holding dogs that could not be transferred to the adoption kennel and now are being transferred. So we are making another trip next saturday. I have no idea how many. The new foster is a challenge, but he is starting to adapt to home life. It is so much fun watching them transition from racing to being a pet.

The boot really helps when we walk. He used to go just short distance when he would stop and freeze. My wife would have to drive to where he stopped and give him a ride home. Yesterday we went almost 2 miles. We leave it on now until he tries to pull it off. We are starting to work on a rehab program for him. Your suggestions are great, since the professional we were referred to hasn't responded. Our program for Verdasco was a little delayed, since at the track in Mexico, there were 40 dogs in the adoption kennel (where they go to wait for us to pick up) that is the maximum. Our group had to go into high gear to rescue the 40, but then we found out that the racing kennels were holding dogs waiting for room. We have to get new fosters to take them in. We took in another foster. (4 greys now) We are going back to Mexico next week to pick up as many as we can. . Hopefully after I go to Mexico (leaving at 3 am) next week thing will get back normal.

Welcome from sunny Southern California. (it actually rained a little today) You mentioned you can't have just one? They are 40 at the track in Tijuana waiting to be rescued. Could you use another For any of you in So Cal. we really could use some foster homes. I really can't stand to think of any dog left behind. We are getting #4, 2 fosters and 2 of our own.

I've been getting frustrated trying to contact the Canine Rehabilitation vet. How can some stay in business when they don't respond. I will be trying all your suggestions. Thank you for your information. I am working on a rehab program because the rehab vet hasn't responded. We've used the boot for a few times. It doses pull the paw forward and straight. He has put his paw down and does walk a few steps but he still hops most of the time. He has stood and put some weight on the paw, so I am hopeful with the boot and the great suggestions we can make some progress. He has some muscle wasting so we must work to keep the muscle.

The vet says he is losing muscle mass on his leg. Today we went for our first longer walk with the boot. He seemed to do better. There were times he actually put his foot down and walked almost normal. Standing he also put his food down, but did not put a lot of weight on it. We need to exercise his leg more. He still hops most of the time. He was quite the celebrity at the vets as none of them had seen the boot and they were taking a lot of pictures. Today we got the Dorsi-Flex boot for Verdasco. He doesn't like it much, but he did much better on our walk today. The Vet says take short walks until he gets used to it. The instructions say to not leave it on for long, but for Short walks the amount of time is about right for now. It has O rings on the toes for the straps to pull his paw straight. It was funny, I could not figure out right away what the clicking sound was, but it was really a good sign, because it meant that his toes were more forward. They also recommend a sock to go underneath the boot and strap holder. Childrens size 4 worked fairly well. All the staff at the vets office were taking a look at it and some pictures, as they had never seen it before. So now it is just time to see how it works. We keep playing phone tag with the canine rehab people. Hopefully we will get Verdasco to them soon.

We still do not have the new device for Verdasco, and haven't been able to connect with the physical therapy vet yet. . We taped up Verdasco's paw, so if he dragged it he would not scrape the top of his paw, and we went almost 2 miles. He led the way some of the walk so I am pleased. He hops but drags his paw at times so we hope the device will help him go for walks. He really enjoys the walks.

Vet number 5, a neurologist, confirms it is nerve damage, but an unusual case as it should have been better by now. We haven't got the therapaw device yet, but he says it IS important to use as the muscles and tendons are "shrinking" in the paw and they need to be stretched. He has referred us to a Canine Rehab vet (#6 vet) Which gives us more hope that something can be done to help him get better. Keep your fingers crossed.

No change in diagnosis from Vets 3 & 4 exam. . It is still apparent nerve damage from the shot.. A case like Verdasco's none of the vets have not seen before (Same as Vet 1 & 2). They all say nerve damage usually fixes it self in a short period of time, but not with Verdasco. Every one I talk to says the same thing, they have given shots and hit a nerve and the nerve problem result has never lasted very long. They have ordered the device from Therapaw so he can go for walks and hopefully learn to put his paw down to keep him active The rest is just wait and see and hope. We will give it some more time keeping him active. They researched NUX VOMICA in their manuals, but did not think it would help with his condition. After a wait and see, we will try alternative vet treatments. I will keep you posted. Wish for the best for Verdasco Thank You, I will see about this when we see the specialist again. I didn't see your comment until after the vet visit. The specialist said before that he didn't think xrays would not be useful.. We will keep trying.

Waiting for a call back from the vets. Now have Vets 3 and 4 trying to figure out what is wrong. They want to keep our pup at the vets office for them to observe him for a while. Vet 3 & 4 have never seen any reaction like this to a shot. They checked about the needle and where the shot was given, but appear baffled. Poor boy, comes off he track fine and then this happens.

We have found a device from therapaw that seems to be what we want. It pulls the paw straight. If our pup doesn't respond or won't recover this will be great so we can go on walks again.He loves his walks and is really disappointed when he can't go with our other two It had to be ordered through a vet, so we have an appointment tomorrow. If the vet does not approve it, we will have to get the boots. So far the boots we have tried he has managed to get off or walk out of.

Vet number 3 thinks it might not be "nerve" damage. We are taking him tomorrow for another exam. Even if it isn't nerve pain, we need something to protect is paw when walking, so I hope he will still order the device from Therapaw. I hope we know more after the exam. So Many say that a shot hitting the nerve shouldn't cause problems this long. It would really be nice to think that it is not permanent. I am just so afraid I've trying something I am not sure of. This whole thing just started with a simple shot given many times by others. I will keep Vox Vomica in mind if the next visit to vet #3 doesn't have any new answers. Would a holistic vet have this? We have used a holistic vet before and she worked wonders with out first grey with spinal stenosis. . We were very happy with her and her services.

Thank you for your response. Nux Vomica is a scary drug, it has the same ingredient as rat poison. There is not much information here on it. It is available. Keltican Forte is not available here. I would have to check with out vets to see. After our bad luck with a simple shot, I am really afraid to try something new.
