  1. My girl had the same problem when I adopted her. Loose stool for 2 + months (really annoying to clean up on walks) and tried a couple different foods, pumpkin, antibiotics, fecal tests, etc. The vet also recommened the flavorless Metamucil (tablespoon sprinkled on top each meal) to add more fiber. Finally, either the dry food I stuck with or time, solved the problem. I suspect she just needed time.
  2. As a newbie at greyhound owner, I was wondering if I had gotten a "defective" model, in that she shows little interest in running at the dog-park. Thank you for this topic -- my girl has buddies just like her! I thought that as a greyhound she would LOVE the park's wide open expanse. I guess she's decided that retirement means, well, retirement. In fact, I have only seen a half-hearted attempt at a full out run at the dog park -- once. Then she looked at me, saw me in awe and wonder at her beauty, and stopped to come for a pet and praise. She ignores the running dogs, the balls being thrown, the play, but loves to sniff around the perimeter of the park and introduce herself to all the people for pets and loves. She sniffs the dogs who come to meet her out of social courtesy and then wanders off to sniff the grass, the bushes, and make another round of begging for loves and pets. Thankfully, this has helped her avoid all the aggressive/poorly trained dogs (and owners) because she is nowhere near the naughtiness going on. So it's easy for us to leave. However, most of the people/dogs we've met so far have been decent. We only go about once a week when the weather's nice. Not enough shade. Now that summer is almost in full swing and night-time lows will soon approach the 80s, our exercise/walking routine is going to need some adaptation.
  3. I used to baby sit by brother's two toy poodles -- one dog had no interest in my big oleander, one did. My new grey, Olivia, is a plant eater -- loves to nibble on grass/plants so I have to watch her and my yard carefully (no oleanders at this house). You are very wise to be doing your research now -- your new grey will love you for it! Don't give up hope! I spent 1 1/2 years preparing and thinking of various problems/solutions/training ideas and wondering if a dog, specifically a grey, would be right for my situation and going "what if my grey eats my cat? what if she has separation anxiety for my 8 hour shift? what if? what if? what if?" My adoption group was excellent and matched me up with my perfect dog for my situation. There are so many people willing to help out and help make the dog's transition (and yours) go smoothly. I can't imagine my life now without Olivia -- she is my constant, but not needy, companion, just as requested!
  4. Thank you for helping me "meet" Hester. He clearly has found a good home - he looks so joyous and happy. I love how each dog has his own story and approach to life and new adventures. I wsh my Olivia could be at a beach but here in sunny Arizona that is not going to happen for awile yet.
  5. Welcome! New here myself with my first black greyhound. Emory is very handsome!
  6. She is acting just as healthy as ever. She tested positive for valley fever and is being treated for it. Let the walks continue!
  7. Olivia was formerly known as RDs Merrygoround and she ran several races (60 if I remember right) at the Tucson track and it was either 6 or 9 races she won, A class. She retired in November at about 4 1/2 years old. I know one of her sisters is also black but I wasn't able to find pictures of her other littermates online. I did see and meet one of her cousins at the Greyt Gathering (Liz kaz). Sadly, yesterday morning she woke up limping on her left back leg and had to take a trip to the vet. She is being tested for Valley Fever and other desert diseases. The doctor gave her some anti-inflamatories and pain medication so she is able to walk better even though she still occasionally does a tri-pod hop as the medicine wears off before her next dosage. She is so brave though. I was worried about her not wanting to put weight on her leg when she got the in car to visit the vet, but when I got her leash out she got excited and hopped right in. She is such a darling, sweet girl. Here is the picture of her in her hat that I was trying to include.
  8. Sorry my picture is so big. I've been trying to resize them both on here and on photobucket but it's not working. It just keeps going back to HUGE.
  9. I adopted Olivia, now 5 years old, in December. Not only is she my first Greyhound but also my first dog I've ever been owned by. So I was so happy to find this forum with so much good information to help me become a good Greyhound mommy. Olivia lives with her sister, a 10 year old Calico cat who barely tolerates "the dog" and who is just starting to forgive me for bringing a dog into her home. Below is a picture of Olivia in her new hat that she bought at the annual Greyt Gathering in Phoenix. (I hope I followed photo insertion instructions correctly and it works.) Also, here is a picture of her doing what greyhounds seem to do best -- napping! The toy she's hugging is deceptive in its cuteness -- I placed it there for the picture. Olivia hasn't quite figured out what the purpose of a toy or a snuggly is.
