  1. Hi and welcome! We use Healthy Paws pet insurance - they only cover emergency treatment and any prescriptions or treatments related to the emergency, no well dog care like physicals, dentals, immunizations, and they do not cover pre-existing conditions. We figure we can plan for the plannable things - it is the emergency care we want to be covered on. Our pups are 9 and 8 - our coverage is at 90% and the total premium is around 110.00 per month. You can get an online quote, and I believe they give a discount if you are a volunteer for any type of animal group.

Our two love cooked eggs - I feed them eggs a couple of times a week on their kibble - either scrambled or hard boiled and passed thru an egg harp.

  2. I have been giving it to my two for four months and the only thing I don't like about it is the high price. I figure it takes care of both fleas and heart worm, so I guess it works out to about the same, and I don't have to put smelly, can't-touch stuff on the back of their necks.

I give it after a meal and wrap it in cold cuts.

  3. If Lea has had problems in the past with her heart while coming out of anesthesia, there is no way I would put her under for a dental, unless she had a major problem. The possible loss of the life of your girl is not a suitable trade off for clean teeth.

Your words really resonate with me. Although the vet is experienced with greys, and handled Lea's situation well, I do worry about her having anesthesia again. Thankfully, her teeth look really good. There is a lady here in Portland who will come to your home an do an "awake dental" so I may look into that as an option.

  4. Hi Karen,

I just had a lesson in how the cost of dentals can vary -

Up until recently, we always took Elliott and Lea to Dr. Rick at Orchards Veterinary Clinic in Vancouver, WA - he was highly recommended by our adoption group, and he was really good with our greys. He retired several months ago, so, since Vancouver, WA is a bit of a drive for us (we live in SE Portland, OR)and since Elliott needed to have a corn hulled, we went to a more local vet at Southgate Animal Clinic in Milwaukie,OR, who was also highly recommended by folks in our adoption group, and is much closer to our home.

I called Southgate to get an approximate cost for a dental - they quoted $350.00 to $500.00 depending on if extractions are needed. Meds would be extra.

I recall Orchards being much less expensive when Elliott had his last dental - around $250.00 or $275.00 total, and Elliott had 8 extractions and required antibiotics and pain meds. Also, while he was under, they trimmed his nails and cleaned his anal glands.

I called orchards to check on current pricing and they quoted $35.00 for the pre-screen and $155.00 (total $191.00) for the dental and anesthesia. Meds are extra. I neglected to ask how much extra for extractions, but since we have used them in the past and switched mainly due to convenience, we are taking the hounds there for their annual and if needed, their dentals.

  5. Both of my hounds are scheduled for their annual in January and I know our boy, Elliott, will probably need a dental - not so sure about our girl, Lea - her teeth and gums look pretty good.

My question is, if they both need it, do you think I should schedule them both on the same day? Elliott had a dental a year ago and was fine afterwards. Lea was put under last year to have a corn removed (I am not sure why that was necessary, since Elliott has had them hulled w/o anesthesia several times, but I was not on GT at the time and had not had any experience with corns at that point)and had an erratic heartbeat coming out of the anesthesia that required a follow-up with a heart specialist, who said she was fine and it was likely from the anesthesia. So I am really hoping she doesn't need it ... I hate for either of them to have to go under and am already doing advance worrying.

    thoughts?
