  1. The only time I use muzzles on my two is when I take them to the vet or to the groomer. We usually don't leave the hounds alone in the house for more than 4 hours (my husband works out of our home) and we have never come back to an injured dog, or any sort of damage or accidents. That said, I wish I had used the muzzles once in awhile so that they didn't dislike wearing them when I do use them.

  2. Kim,

I am sorry Larry is causing you so much concern - you are doing the same thing I do when one of mine is not acting "normal" - I replay everything in my head and try to figure out what I did to cause it,and my mind always skips from the actual symptoms to the worst thing it could possibly be. What worries me the most is if either of them is off their food because they both are enthusiastic eaters. I also worry when they hide out in the back rooms because I try to figure out why they need to isolate themselves.

Lea is a spook about thunder and fireworks. We give her melatonin, which helps a bit, and she seems to feel better laying on a bath mat in the bathroom with the fan on (white noise).

She also snaps at flies in the back yard and is really good at catching them. I have heard, though that snapping at non-existant flies can be signs of a seizure, but Larry doesn't seem to be having other seizure symptoms (hope I haven't gotten you worrying about that, but it may be worth asking the vet).

Sending calming thoughts to you and Larry and healing thoughts to Nube.

    Tess

  3. I am not sure if this will help, but thought I would throw it out there ... one of my hounds gives blood every 3 mos at a local emergency vet hospital - the e-vet there makes a TPN solution that is administered via pic line interveinously over a short term period while dogs are recovering from surgery or illness and can't take nutrition in a normal fashion. I wonder if this is an option for you?

Best of luck for you and Dandi.

  4. Our Lea had a toe amputated while she was waiting to be adopted. We are are actually her second home, and when we got her, we noticed a green mark that looked like mint dental floss under the skin at the amputation site, which she did not like to have touched. When we went to the vet, they told us that sometimes the disovable sutures don't dissolve, and they pulled it out - she seems much more comfortable with it out.

Your video of Rogan is adorable!

  5. We feed Costco Lamb with rice and vegetables together with a bit of Merrick Whole Earth wet. Our boy came to us with stinky breath and bad teeth and has had more than half of his teeth extracted - he does much better when I consistenly use enzyme spray and brush his teeth, but even though he gets an annual dental, his breath is never wonderful. Our girl came to us with nice teeth and always has pleasant breath.

  6. We've been using Frontline for the last 2 years, seasonally from April to September - have never seen a flea on either of them. I plan to get the Costco brand next time and see how well it works - much cheaper and looks to have the same ingredients as the Frontline.

  7. My boy, Elliott, started limping like that and we thought it might be a twisted nail - had him to the vet twice with two sets of x-rays and they couldn't find anything. He was on pain meds, anti inflamatory meds and antibiotics for about 6 weeks and nothing helped. We had a second opinion and even that vet found nothing and agreed with treating it conservatively ... a few weeks later the corn popped up and was quite visible and hard to the touch - no hint of it prior to that.

I hope it is as simple as that with your houndie. Best of luck and good wishes going out to you!

  8. My lovely Lea (PTL Lea http://www.greyhound...ear=&birthland=) is related to HB's Commander, and she was a brood mama prior to retiring. Is in perfect health so far, aside from the occasional corn. I can understand your need to make sense of something that seems senseless.

OMG you have LARRY'S MOTHER!!!!!!!! http://greyhound-dat...year==

    he is PTL LaRoach!!!!!!

Hi Kim,Sorry it took so long for me to reply - I usually only visit Greytalk on my breaks or lunch at work and sometimes in the evening at home. I would love to find out more about your Larry and share info (and pics) about Lea. E-mail me at TINMANPDX@GMAIL.COM. I am kind of new to this site and am not sure how to e-mail or communicate privately with other members.

  9. Hi - My grey, Elliott has been eating dirt from a particular spot in our back yard for about the last two weeks. He lays on the same spot in the grass, where there is a little patch of moist dirt, and he munches just like he is eating out of his food bowl - big chomps! He doesn't do it when we are out walking, or at other people's homes, just when he is in the back yard and in that spot. We never leave him alone in the yard for very long, and we always leave the back screen open so he can come back in when he is done taking care of his "business", so I don't think he is doing it because something is upsetting him in the yard ... He hasn't had any tummy problems or diarrhea - just seems to really like this one tasty spot. I will be interested to see the other responses, and am glad you posted!

  10. For the first few days after we brought him home, our boy, Elliott, licked the wall next to his bed (which is in our bedroom)at night. We figured it was a stress release, and since it stopped after a short period, we forgot about it until about a year later, we brought home our girl, Lea ... we are her second home, and when we first got her she was extremely shy, nervous and easily scared. She also licked everything - herself, her beds, the hardwood floor, the metal legs of my husband's office chair. The more "at home" she feels with us, the more she can depend on her routine, the less she licks, although we still catch her at it now and again. She has never licked herself raw, and the activity seems to calm her, so we just don't make a big deal out of it - the behavior seems to be lessening as time goes by.

  11. Hi all,

I tried to search for this topic, but I couldn't find anything, although I'll bet it's just me not knowing how to navigate :-P

I'm assembling a "home" greyhound first aid kit and would like to get some of your suggestions for essential items.

In previous posts, folks have mentioned medihoney and pepcid ac - I don't have these, but they sound like good things to keep on hand just in case.

We already have rolls of different size vet wrap, and the typical things found in our human first aid kit - what specific things should I keep on hand for my greys and what are they used for?

Also - I keep a human first aid kit in the car and a roll of vet wrap - any suggestions for other stuff to keep in the car?

  12. Beef bones are not considered raw meaty bones like turkey necks & chicken parts are. They are too hard & are used for recreation. My hounds never liked recreational bones but love RMB's. AFAIK, racers aren't given RMB's, only ground meat so all of this may be completely new to your girl. (She isn't having any dental issues, right?) If it's a turkey neck she wouldn't eat, was it at room temp? You could also try searing it (just for a couple of seconds) to get her attention smell-wise. Patience & confidence are usually your best bet - once she gets it, watch out! :chow

    Thanks for your response!

Haven't given them the turkey necks yet, but they are defrosting in the fridge for tomorrow :-)

Lea has a great set of choppers - no dental problems I know of. Can't wait to see if she likes the turkey neck.

Sorry I am a big noob at this, but do you cut the claws off of the feet before you give it to them?

They had the claws clipped off already and had been dehydrated jerky-style - they seemed pretty crunchy.

  13. I picked up some raw meaty (beef)bones for my greys this weekend as well as some heart and gizzard and a few turkey necks - also picked up some dried chicken and duck feet for treats. I was surprised that none of these things were very expensive, and it seems like fancy canned food sometimes costs more.

My plan is to keep them on their regular diet, only reduce the amount I feed, and supplement with raw to see how it goes. I am not sure if we will switch entirely to raw, but I would like to see how they like it and what the cost will be.

The chicken and duck feet went over fabulously - both of my hounds absolutely loved them.

My boy, Elliott loved his bone and layed down on the grass in the back yard and started eating it right away, then he went into a bushy area of our yard, hid it and went back to finish about 15 minutes later and completely scoured it clean. It kept him happy and busy for over an hour. I loved watching him enjoy it so much.

My girl, Lea, licked at hers a bit and seemed not know what she was supposed to do with it. I offered it again, later and she did the same thing. I gave her the smaller of the two bones in terms of diameter and it doesn't seem too big for her to chomp. She is a retired racer and brood mama, so I know she ate raw at some point ... In a prior thread where a grey would not eat chicken, someone suggested rubbing liver treats on the chicken, so I may try to coat the bone with some of the wet food she likes on her kibble and see what happens.

I guess I have two questions - is it ok to just supplement with raw, and any thoughts on getting my girl to dig in?

  14. I have been shopping around myself, and have found two "generic" versions of Frontline Plus that are much less expensive. One is sold at Costco under the Kirkland brand and the other is available online (on Amazon and through many of the major online pet supply stores)and is called Ecto Advance. Both have the same active ingredients as Frontline Plus. The Costco brand seems to be the best discount - I can't vouch for it's effectiveness, as I haven't tried it yet, but maybe somone else on this site has tried the generic version and can comment.
