  1. I'm glad she's doing OK and showing good healing progress.

Does your vet do therapeutic laser? Beth had some (much smaller) open wounds from a dog bite this fall that were frustrating me with their slowness in healing -- I did one session of laser therapy on them and it definitely seemed to speed up their closing. I would absolutely do it again (and sooner) next time she has any significant wound or surgical site needing healing.

I don't know, but sometime I'll ask her. So far though, we're doing well and I don't want any more intervention that we have to have.

Tonight we walked on our road for the first time - the opposite direction from the crime scene, but I was a nervous wreck by the time we got home. Think I need an adult beverage now. I think the dogs enjoyed getting out though, so mission accomplished!

  2. We had a good visit at the vet today, out came the drain and the stitches and the Dr. was really pleased with Leah's healing progress :) 1 more week of AB and a final follow up visit and we should be done at the vet's for a while :balloonparty

We went by the hooman hospital on the way home to walk on their nice track - it's clean, and safe and there are no "stray" dogs there so enjoyed getting some badly missed exercise and a bit of sniffing.

Thank you all for your help and support and hug your hounds :ghplaybow

  3. I've been in AZ 20 years and have never seen that beast! I've probably seen all the others you've mentioned though including the ones that rattle. I spray for bugs religiously and seldom see any since I do, but I saw the tail of the first snake of the season yesterday -- non poisonous thankfully.

    But we don't have hurricanes!!

good to know you have never seen one - I will think twice about putting my hand into the propane holder for the grill --- seems like it might

be the perfect place for those giant buggers to hide --- not to mention scorpions and black widow spiders and a whole host of other

    creepy-crawlies!!!

  4. I imagined hundreds of times how I would protect my hounds if this nightmare ever occurred, and I failed to. I was emotionally prepared to inflict severe damage to an attacker, but in the moment I couldn't get close enough. It was all too fast.

I'm glad that Zephyr escaped with only minor injuries and I hope your ability to relax and enjoy your walks was later restored. Thank you.

I'm just catching up on Leah's progress. I'm so glad she is getting better. This is one of my worst fears. My Zephyr was attacked while he was on leash by an off leash pit bull about 4 years ago on Christmas Eve right in front of our house. Some people were visiting at the house next door. I was taking him out for a walk. He has a few small scars, but it was nothing like what happened to you and Leah. He didn't even have to go to the vet. The fear and anxiety from that are still with me today, but it's gotten better. Luckily he pulled out of his collar and was able to run away down the street. The pit chased him. My neighbors were coming to help by then. Zephyr did get one bite back at the dog leaving a small cut on it's head. I had actually pet this dog once and it was very friendly, but I think the fighting is just in their nature and they don't stop. I tend not to walk on streets and go in the forest most of the time and I always carry pepper spray and my phone now. But, when something like that happens it's so fast I don't know if I'd be able to get the spray out in time.

It's so sad and unfair that this happened to Leah. I hope you both continue to heal and feel better. :ghplaybow

  5. That's another helpful hint, thank you. But to tell you the truth ... I don't let them out of my sight now. Not that they were ever far from me, but now I watch everything and examine the yard frequently.

Gates have been locked forever. Motion detector lights on all corners of the house. Pistols loaded.

But I'm calm and confident and cheerful for the dogs somehow.

Leah was feeling better yesterday - even did a playbow and half-snarked once at Jimmie :love2

If you are concerned with the neighbors throwing something in the yard, muzzles with stool guard will keep the dogs from eating something they shouldn't. Hope your sweetie heals quickly.

  6. From the photos, I think you have a fenced yard? If so, please be careful and check the area before you let your guys outside. Look for something your guys shouldn't get into that someone could have thrown over the fence.

Sorry to sound so suspicious, but I'm really not trusting your neighbors just now. They haven't been very helpful so far...

OMG....I hadn't even thought of that. Fenced yard, sure. Thank you so much. Lucky for all of you that I can't type as profanely as I'm thinking right now.

We're experiencing 50mph gusts today so no hound is out, but when they are I am nearly always with them. Especially in the last two weeks since the seizures and now Leah being hurt.

This is why my motto is - the more people I meet the more I like my dogs. Thank you for thinking of this precaution.

  7. I'm so glad to hear Leah is healing well. When does the drain come out?

I'm not exactly sure, or perhaps I forgot. That wound is still weeping pretty good. I'll talk to the vet tomorrow. They even called me today to check on her - I thought that was really sweet.

About the time we usually walk, Jimmie started getting excited tonight but I just couldn't bring myself to walk on our street. So, we took the recycling to Walmart and pooped in their parking lot. We stayed way down on the lower edge of the lot so we didn't have to encounter anyone questioning her injuries. We had a nice safe walk and I know they both enjoyed it and then we came home. Not sure I want that to be our regular route but it worked for tonight :)

As we returned home there was a truck that looked like it might have been the one they used to remove the attacker afterwards. I notified the deputy but I sure wish I didn't have to look for crap like that. I just wish this was over.

  8. I am very happy with her progress. She is still freaked out over the drain wiggling around, but she's being very good otherwise. I know her wounds will heal physically and I will do all that I can to keep her from developing any anxiety about other animals. I think the anxiety will be mostly mine. She's been exposed to a great number of situations and people and she trusts me. She hasn't been too jumpy or anxious thankfully, course we haven't been out of the house except to the vet. Not sure what we'll do about the walking situation yet.

Thanks again to you all for your support and stories. No one - hound or otherwise deserves this. WTH can't people just be responsible and careful. Never mind, that was rhetorical and I know there's no good answer. We just have to be more suspicious and watchful I guess. Man this just sucks.

  9. Today we got the IV removed as she ate breakfast and drank like a hound should do. Whew. Then she went to her favorite bed outside so she could bask in the warm sun. I sat with her and defied any fly to come near her :POed , but she still kept staring at her butt :wow like they do. New pics here

We had some houndie pals come by so they've had some company to sniff and follow around today - good to break up the monotony probably.

I got several calls from friends and had to relay the saga so many times that I'm drained. Oh then I got in a bit of a snit with a snotty receptionist, over reacted at two folks that let their dogs get too close to us then tried to pick up the amoxy prescription that hadn't been called in or maybe never received at the pharmacy. 4 phone calls later by me and the pharmacist and an hour with dogs in the car -- still no rx. Two hours later it was filled and a friend went to get it for me.

Now, there are 4 hounds snoring and I am going to check on my yard to see what has sprouted. I love spring. Tomorrow will be better than today, but today was better than yesterday.

Hug your hounds folks and thank you all. I'm very gretyful to for you.

  10. Thanks for that advice, I will be prepared with photos. And vet bills......and a really bad attitude probably.

The Sheriffs Deputy also took digital shots at the animal hospital. I'm sure they will help too.

Again, thanks to all of you. Jimmie is still snoring, Leah just had some meds in peanut butter and then acted like my freshly boiled chicken might kill her :)

    Hug your hounds folks.

For your court date, you need to have the pictures that were taken of Leah enlarged (think at least 8 x 10) so the judge can see what was done to your dog. Hugs to you both!

  11. Just picked Leah up from the vet, they put her on an IV since she was not drinking or eating. She finally peed and pooped at the vets this morning, so that was positive. This afternoon they got her to eat some of their magical canned food so that was a big relief.

Jimmie was so glad to see her, and her him :) They're both taking naps now ... just as it should be :beatheart

We'll return tomorrow so she can take the IV needle out, another 4 days till the drain comes out.

She's not anxious at all since I picked her up, hopefully she' going to just start healing and things will be improving from here on.

Jimmie is doing fine - he's snoring on the bed right next to me and has a serious case of ets.

Passing that house is hard. No, this whole thing is hard. I thought I was prepared to protect my dogs but I wasn't. I keep replaying the attack in my head and wishing I could have done something differently. Anything to have helped her avoid the injuries. Weapons, wishing I'd had others with me. Not sure who would have gotten shot. Now I'm dreading the court date - me against them. There were no witnesses to the actual attack. The attacker dog has "disappeared", the cop said it's like not finding the murder weapon.

Thank you all so much. I'm just rambling now, but I want you to know how greytful I am to you all.

    Hug your hounds...

  12. Thank you all so much. Today she's just completely miserable. The drain scares her, the wind is scaring her, she won't eat or drink much. She's had her tramadol, metacam, amoxy. She naps intermittently and then comes for hugs and I take her back and pet her till she rests again.

I'm sending frequent photos and updates to our vet, we may go in for an IV later. The seeping and mild bleeding is to be expected.

I'm not in a rush to pick up prescriptions so I still haven't discovered the anxiety pills name. Thank you all so much for the responses regarding that.

the collection of photos are here. Jimmie is holding his own and being a very good and loving brother.

just heard from the vet, we're heading over there now.

thank you all so much. hug your hounds...
