  1. Mine seem to have chosen their favorite dumping grounds and stick to them. When we have visiting hounds though, they are the ones I have to tread carefully behind! They don't seem to respect the existing areas.

Maybe you could place a "deposit" in an area that you want her to use to lure her there?

:hehe imagining how tired she would get.... :hehe

If we started treating Bella after every potty, she'd be asking to go out and would squeeze something out every 2 minutes :lol

Thanks for the helpful suggestions so far!

  2. I'm so sorry for your loss. Loss is tough in any case, but a sudden death seems even harder to me. I lost my 7 year old to a stroke, in my arms shortly after she had a meal and was relaxing outside. She had experienced un-diagnosed focal seizures most of her short life.

My heart aches for your loss and your sorrow. I hope you find some answers that will make it easier for you.

  3. I used Revolution on Lima who had focals and Chip who had "regular" seizures but I never spotted a correlation to the usage. Jimmie's seizures are still a mystery - he's on Iverheart Plus and occasional frontline plus.

I respond to every repetitive sound that I hear - I can't imagine the horror that you guys are experiencing. The helplessness is paralyzing. I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through this. Fingers crossed.

That's a great idea. Now just to find my pedometer....

I have to agree- they both suck and yes bone cancer is horrible but seizures are unpredictable.

I have totally changed my life for Thunder. He has to have his drugs around 6:15 am and 6:15 pm so I can never sleep in, can't do out to dinner unless I take him with and I'm always watching him to see if he's twitching (focal seizure).

This past weekend, he had 11 seizures. It was horrible and I've never felt so helpless.

  4. SCOOOORE! Wow - you must have a bigger freezer than I do! Is it game and do you feed all raw? Sounds as if you are quite committed to a full raw diet. Well done - you should be set for a while now.

Awesome prices! I just carted home 930lbs of meat for the dogs. Hopefully it will last almost a year. :-)

I'm getting mine from the grocery that caters more to Hispanic customers and they order the turkey necks for me. The regularly carry chicken feet, gizzards and necks and occasionally backs.

I cut the turkey necks in half with my new hedge lopper and then freeze them, so they actually get a half neck each time. I wrap the chicken parts in waxed paper before I freeze them to make life easier.

MIne have gotten to where they sneer at thawed food - the wiggly skin freaks them out :) Sometimes I will toss them on a VERY hot grill just for a few seconds to sear the skin, but generally they get them frozen solid....OUTSIDE only!

Raw bones are no problem - it's the cooked bones that you want to avoid.

The cheapest I've found is $1.49 lbs for chicken necks! I've tried turkey necks, but Lady treats them more like chew toys rather than a meal.

Do you feed them whole, raw chicken thighs? I've never let Lady have the bone, just wondering how that would go over with her.

Also wanted to get your opinion on leaving the skin on. One place I get the necks from keeps the skin on. Lady likes them just as much, but it does take her a bit longer to eat them.

  5. We're raw dabblers - I'm too lazy to compose the proper ratio of meat/bone/organ so I feed Kirkland kibble (or Iams Mini if unavailable), cooked veggies/meat & about every third day I replace a meal with frozen chicken or turkey neck aka meat-sicles :) This week our freezer is very happy and full as I found chicken thighs for 68 cents and turkey necks for 65 cents!!! SCOOOOORE!

The best news? When I took my 8 year old in for her annual visit and the vet said "her teeth look GREAT!" So I live in a gas free zone, poops are able to roll downhill, the hounds LOVE their food and I don't have to anesthetize my babies to get their teeth cleaned :) It may not be a suitable diet for everyone, but it works GREYT for us.

Why do I go through all of this??? Cause they're worth it :beatheart006.JPG

  6. now you're making ME hungry! Can't wait to hear about your successes :chow

Yup! We are a faux cosmopolitan city! Got several different varieties, too!!

I'd kinda thought about mixing sweet potatoes with bananas for leathers or adding sweet potatoes to the beef for a jerky variety. My dogs would probably love their beef mixed with a powdered sugar donut....but I'm not sure about other dogs :)

This event is the first Saturday in June so I need to get a "menu" figured out and a few test runs made before I do the stuff we are going to sell.

How does ground chicken mixed with spinach sound? There are so darned many options that I don't really know where to start.

  7. I haven't tried it yet, but I saw a great recipe on GT a while back for ground chicken breast and sweet potato jerky treats. I don't know why you couldn't use your jerky gun to shape these too? Or you could just spread them and make "leather" with them. As I recall those were the only ingredients. I'm always leery of using garlic since I've heard so many varying opinions about it, so I don't add anything to my treats. Mine seem to like chicken more than beef for some reason.

Can't wait to hear how yours turn out! :cookie

  8. Having just endured two weeks of open wounds on my girl, I understand your confusion about permitting the licking :wow . My girl would have lost her mind in an e-collar, so I just watched her carefully and muzzled as needed. I quickly discovered that she was most prone to licking when I kept insisting on applying the neosporin, so I just eliminated it as she had 2 weeks of antibiotics. Her wounds were left open the entire time - bite wounds to be exact.

Good luck with your guy - sounds like you've both been through a lot already. :goodluck

  9. Sounds like a seizure to me as well and I'd be contacting my vet. If it was, they are usually very disoriented after an event and often fearful. I always avoid touching them until they appear calm and able to recognize me. I might speak quietly to them and try to prevent them from injuring themselves, but I avoid touching them.

Best wishes for a positive outcome for you both. I know how scary this can be.

    :goodluck

  10. Thanks! I made them on some NEON nylon fabric that I had and had the embroidery done by a friend. I had the lettering made very large so that it could be read at a distance if the hounds were ever loose. I put velcro on them and they wear them whenever we're out ... just in case.

So glad Leah is feeling better!!!

Somewhat off topic, but what did you use to make the collars with their names and phone numbers? It's a greyt idea, it looks like you can read those from quite a distance, which is wonderful. If I didn't know better, I would say they almost look like they are made from duct tape....you know you can do so many things with that these days.... :bgeorge

Oh geez that makes me sick to hear about all those injuries and damage. I'm so sorry for everyone that got hurt. But even if the guy doesn't want the dog, he was the owner when the attack happened so he's still responsible. I hope the attack was reported to the police. Best wishes to all for a speedy and full recovery.

Leah is doing well thanks. Still eating her pills and being good about licking most of the time :) She's such a good girl unless you try to touch her feet :yikes

Cheers to Izzy and the crew :)

This happened to my friends boxer earlier today, only her boxer and beagle were in her own yard, the pit mix first attacked the beagle which my friends daughter tried to stop and got bit in the process, then the pits owner showed up and his own dog turned on him and bit him in the face, I think they said 18 stitches above the eye, finally the pit turned on the boxer, he is in pretty bad shape tonight, just like your Leah he is full of drains and many staples. Now the owner of the pit says he doesn't want the dog so doesn't feel he should be responsible for the bills !? Seriously irresponsible owners are my biggest pet peeve.

I agree , dont stop the abx to soon, infection is definitely your worst enemy, also when you are out in public places walking, try to cover the wound areas as best as possible, again infection in bite wounds is very common and can cause so many additional problems.

Give Leah lots of love and TLC from Rhonda and Izzy in Iowa !

ps I have the phrase "Hug the Dog" embroidered on one of my totes, as doing so ALWAYS makes one feel better :)
