  1. Ohh, I like the large-size kibble. There's less hacking when my guys wolf it down.
  2. I'm just wondering if Iams makes a bigger bag than the 35-pound? Where does everyone buy their green bag and what's the best price on it?
  3. They say that dogs don't have the capacity to have feelings like humans (i.e. jealousy, spite, vengeful, etc). But whoever said that lied! My guys definitely get jealous of each other. They compete for my attention sometimes, so I pretty much do the same thing that the above posters talked about. Give them both attention, or if it gets too pushy, walk away and give neither attention. I've found that they also compete for each other's attention. If I take them both to the dog park and Truman takes interest in another dog, Henry will body block and try to push Truman away and start a bitey-face game. It's almost like he's jealous and says, "Hey! Play with me!"
  4. So sorry you're going through this. I hope it's not osteo.
  5. Mine do the same thing with the small kibble. I switched to a large breed formula, which has bigger pieces. We do Iams green bag, but whatever you use is fine as long as he's eating it and his poops are firm. I like doing this rather than mixing it with water, because chewing the larger pieces helps clean their teeth.
  6. We had terrible problems with High Prairie. I think Henry had some type of allergic reaction to the bison in it. He was constantly licking at his paws and bum. One of our friends feeds TOTW with no problems. If yours are doing well, then I'd continue feeding it and just check the bag's serial numbers against the recalled bags.
  7. It really depends on the individual dog. I like Dentley's knuckle bones (you can get them at PetSmart) and CET dental chews. Some people don't feel comfortable giving rawhide or bones unsupervised. I've never had a problem. Kongs are good too, but I find them to be a lot of work and my dogs never finish them.
  8. Lots of folks on GT have had bad results with Blue Buffalo. It is supposed to be high quality, but it seems to be too rich for NGA greyhounds. I'm another green bag convert.
  9. I can't say enough good things about green bag. The only one who had a hard time adjusting was me (I thought I was horrible for feeding my dogs garbage food from Walmart). Those feelings went away after I saw how solid and normal-looking the poops were. I did go from the mini chunks to the large breed formula. There's no difference in ingredients, just in the size of the chunks. My dogs eat rather fast, and they ended up swallowing the mini chunks whole and coughing some back up. I find that the larger pieces force them to chew more, which is also good for the teeth.
  10. We tried Science Diet, TOTW, and Diamond Naturals in the past and always ended up with runny poops. After a few years of this, I tried Iams green bag with much success. I do know what you mean- my boys seem to have larger poops on the green bag. They haven't lost or gained any weight, so I'm okay with it. It just seems a lot easier than buying a more expensive brand and then having to mix probiotics or beet pulp in.
  11. I'm a total Iams green bag convert. I tried everything from Science Diet to TOTW to Diamond Naturals. They all gave my dogs runny poops. I switched to green bag with no transition (I figured, could it really get much worse?), and they both did wonderfully. I was shocked.
  12. I brought Truman home at 4-months-old, and I DEFINITELY understand what you're going through. He's just about 11-months-old and it seems like he just keeps getting taller and longer. He looks really skinny through the middle. I'm always a little embarrassed because people constantly ask me why he's so thin. My vet told me that they will continue growing even past a year old, so he will eventually fill out in time. Also, I expect him to fill out more after he's neutered. Unlike yours, Truman is always hungry. I give two cups of Iams (green bag) in the morning and evening. He'll gobble his food up, then wait behind my other dog to steal crumbs from the floor. We've learned not to leave anything sit out, because he's a big counter surfer. I started supplementing his food with half a can of wet food (Iams Lamb and Rice) with each meal. I'm reluctant to feed him anything real high calorie because it seems like the richer foods give him diarrhea. We tried lots of more expensive brands (Diamond, TOTW, Science Diet) with little improvement. I'm hoping the canned food makes a difference. Good luck!
  13. I thought it was gone but she was peeing about every 10 minutes and had blood in every single pee. They checked her urine last night and it was full of white cells which is why they put her on a different antibiotic this time. She was in a lot of pain last night and the vet said to give her tramadol 3 times a day for a couple of days until the antibiotic starts to work. Keep us posted on her progress. The Bean has a pretty large fan club.
  14. This may be a bit off-topic, but the symptoms of UTIs are really difficult to get rid of- even for people. I had a pretty bad UTI last spring and was prescribed a strong dose of Cipro for ten days. Months after that, I still had UTI-like symptoms. I had to see a specialist, and apparently the bacteria from the infection can irritate the lining on your bladder. Then, depending on the different foods and drinks you ingest, urine continues to irritate the bladder lining, causing it to feel like a UTI even when the infection is gone. It was really painful and annoying. Anyways, I hope everything is okay. I have a soft spot in my heart for Jilly.
  15. So sorry to hear this awful news. Sending our thoughts and prayers your way.
  16. I love this picture! Bessie is an absolute doll.
  17. Phew. At least we're in good company!
  18. Truman gets real freaked out if you try to touch him with your feet. Even if I brush my foot up against him by accident, he jumps away. Does anybody else's grey do this?
  19. So for the past few days, I've been working with Henry and Truman to go through the doggie door. We are to the point where they are both going in and out with the flap on. The only problem is that they don't seem to understand that they are allowed to go out whenever they want. It's like, they'll use the door only if I'm standing there prompting them. Truman is still peeing on the basement floor (near the door). I'm sure it's going to take some time to master the behavior, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to facilitate the process. In other words, how do I teach, "Use the doggie door when you have to go pee"?
  20. I've worked with both dogs on our new door for a few days. We're to the point where they will go in and out when I give them a command. The problem is... I don't think they've figured out that they can go outside whenever they want. They want me to be right there instructing them. Truman is still peeing on the basement floor (near the door) when I'm not home. Any suggestions for this?
  21. I'm making them try it everytime we go out. Truman pretty much gets the concept and will go through (albeit not very gracefully). Henry will poke his head through the flap and look around. Hen did come through it once, but he definitely seems uncomfortable. I don't think he cares about the flap that much, he's more weird about using his legs to step through it. Very funny about your foster! Truman had me lifting him in and out of the car, pretending like he couldn't do it. I guess I was the chauffeur.
  22. Any tips/tricks on teaching the doggie door? We just had one installed and my boys are both a little skeptical. It's like they have no idea how to work their back legs to step in and out!
  23. This saved my life. We have three of them. The cats have their own space and the dogs can't access their food.
  24. I hope you haven't been this harsh on him for seven years. If he contributes absolutely nothing to your life, then do him a favor and consider rehoming.
