  1. 16yr old Zoe the IG turns up her nose at kibble, anymore. So last winter, I switched her to canned food. Talked with Doc about choices at the store, and compared ingredients in some of the brands. She gets Pedigree canned, with Doc's blessing (it has less fat than the others I considered). A co-worker tried to tell me I was doing her a disservice, and I should have her on ... Merrick?... instead. Like the rest of you, I've done the expensive food and the less expensive food, as well as raw, and cooking for my dogs over the last 8 years.

  2. Chiropractor found lots to adjust, and she was walking better when we left chiro than when we entered.

Doc checked her over thoroughly and found nothing to worry about. Said she's deeply bruised on the side that hit the ground, so we're doing rimadyl for a few days. Doc says she'll be back to normal in about 5 days.

She sat for me at the vet's office while we were waiting to be seen, and also sphinxed, which she hadn't done earlier today (it's her favorite way to lie down, so when she wasn't sphinxing, it was another indicator).

Oh, and when we were trimming her nails at the vet, we found a small boo-boo on her front toe, that might have happened when she fell. That could easily be where the blood drops came from.

Robin, here are my 2 fave pics of her:

  3. I lived in a 2-story townhome, and it didn't impact my dogs at all (2 greys and an IG). My Angie-girl had arthritis in her hips, so it reached the point where stairs were more than she could handle, but the stairs didn't cause any problems.

That said, if your hounds have problems, the stairs could exacerbate them, but I've never heard of stairs causing problems.

  4. KF - there's a canine chiropractor at Bells Ferry Veterinary Hospital, and a canine acupuncturist/chiropractor on Johnson Ferry. You also have a very grey-savvy vet right there in Marietta -- she's on Lower Roswell.

The BFVH chiropractor is only there on Wednesday afternoons, but she's good. When I was taking Casey there in 2009 (she has LS), it was $40/visit.

The Johnson Ferry place just opened last Feb, and I've not been there. It's GA Veterinary Rehabilitation. They do swim therapy as well. Their website is GAVetRehab.com, and the practice owner studied at OSU, according to the brochure. No idea what their prices are.

  5. Last night, I picked up the girls from my friend who watches them for me. It was about 930 when we were leaving, cause we had to visit while I was there - hadn't seen each other in awhile.

Casey is safe off-lead, so I let her just take herself over to the car, while we walked behind. She was so excited to be going home that she ran to the car, ran circles around it, and then started running back to us.

    Started, yeah.

She wiped out on the driveway, but got up with no problem and waited beside the car for me to get there and open the door. I opened one of the side doors instead of the hatch for her to get in, cause that was closer.

Uneventful ride home - she and Zoe make great car companions.

We got home, I opened the hatch and she jumped out with no problem, trotting to the back yard gate and waiting for me to open it.

In the light from the car, I saw what looked like blood spots on the rug that covers the floor of the car, but when I got Casey inside and checked her over, I didn't see anything bleeding, and no open wounds/abrasions.

At bedtime, I thought she was walking a little funny heading down the hall, but when I called her back and had her walk again so I could watch, she looked normal.

This morning, we went outside, and she's holding one foot off the ground. Didn't pee, and I'm putting thoughts in her head and saying it's because she didn't trust her back legs to hold her, or because she was afraid it would hurt to squat.

Gave her a rimadyl, and just called Doc to let them know I'll be bringing her in today. We're also hitting the chiropractor - plan to be there as soon as they open.

I'm worried about my girl - she's so stoic, so for her to be keeping one foot off the ground means something's going on. :(

  6. Here's a secondhand story about a different kind of bridge angel...

Mom passed away in Dec 2003, when my nephew's wife was pregnant with her 3rd son. 3-4 years later, she heard the 3rd son in the kitchen at Dad's house (they lived with Dad), laughing and giggling. She asked him what he was doing, and he said he was playing with "Grandma Duck." that's what her kids called my mom, because Mom collected ducks.

Back on topic... my Angie-girl came to see me, sometime in the first 6months after she left, I think. We had a nice chat, and it was very helpful.

I remember apologizing to her because I had to leave while she was still in the vet's office (business trip that day), and she said "You had to go make the money to buy the dog food" which is what I would say to the girls every morning as I left for work, back in the days I had to go to the office.

  7. Phene, there are places over the bridge where a boy can get a tummy rub any time he wants, without even having to ask.

There are places to snooze in the grass, and places where you can dream of home and send your one true person a kiss on the wind.

    Godspeed, unforgettable boy.

Run free to good health, buddy boy.....

    giant hugs to you, Robin

  8. I only feed my precious Bootsy grass-fed unicorn with the occasional cage-free platypus egg for a treat. Sure, it can be hard to find and it costs a lot, but I love him too much to feed him anything else.

I'm so glad that works for Bootsy -- Pippin would have diarrhea if I fed him that. :lol He had diarrhea on most high-end foods, so we alternate between Kirkland's chicken/rice formula and Purina One Sensitive Tummy.

Before Pip, my dogs were on a raw diet, but Pip could never get the hang of getting the meat off the bones. If he can't shovel it into his mouth, he won't eat it. And he would eat around the organ meat and leave it behind. Casey got fat on his leavings. So we're all on kibble now, because I can't afford two different diets, and six months after switching to kibble, Casey needed a dental for the first time in years.

  9. The rule in my house is "no dogs in the kitchen." That way I don't have to worry about counter surfers, and Zoe's food is left in peace (Zoe's not a dog, she's a princess). Pippin eats in the kitchen, but that's the only time he's allowed in there unless we're going THROUGH the kitchen.

And all my dogs learn "MINE!" as in -- leave my food alone. Doesn't work when Bobber snags it before you can do anything, but it works for me when I have a bowl of popcorn while watching tv, or whatever.
