  1. I haven't checked my costco yet, but i've gotten some pretty good deals on Ebay for those big Flossies (similar to bully sticks) that my girls like. In a large quantity, they were less than half the cost of buying them individually at the pet store.

  2. Do you give your dog a snack before bed? And if so, what?? By the time we go to bed, it's been 7 hrs. since they ate their dinner, and they seem hungry. I would love to give them something yummy besides a dog biscuit. I read on here once that someone gives theirs each a half peanut butter sandwich. :colgate

  3. all the suggestions i've read here are great. when we first adopted abby, she would wail and cry horribly when we left the house. You could hear it all the way down the street!! i felt so bad. this was 14 years ago; i was pretty uneducated about dog training techniques, and knew nothing about "alone training". we were just winging it. anyhow, she just outgrew it naturally. most dogs will, but the alone training thing seems to work really well. good luck with your new pal and don't despair.

  4. when we first got jackie, and then lola, they panted a lot for days. they were nervous, even though we were doing our best to make them secure and comfortable. when they get used to their new home, they won't pant like that. mine still pant when i bring them to someone's house where they've never been. just give daisy some time to adjust. (have you posted any pictures yet?) :)

  5. yeah, it's weird. we had Abby for 13+ years, and she wasn't afraid of anything. We watched a video the other day from hurricane Wilma...and the weather was pretty violent outside, and there she was, completely unfazed. same thing with fireworks. she almost kinda liked them! and i used to think to myself, "man, i can't believe some people's dogs are so freaky", and i felt really superior. well now i have to deal with it, too, and we'll find some better ways for next time. hope everyone has a more peaceful night tonight!

omgosh here's an old pic of abby enjoying the display!

  6. While my 2 dogs are sleeping/cowering in the closet right now with pillows over their heads, i thought i'd pose this question....

how come our dogs, just like they learn anything else, also learn from experience that no harm will come to them from the

popping noises going on outside?? i would think that maybe at first they might be alarmed, but when it happens repeatedly,

and they are fine, then they might learn that it is not harmful. just wondering why this is. any thoughts?

  7. we were hunkered down in the bedroom tonight with a fan on loud and the soccer game blaring full blast.

they had some drugs, but they still shook some. i've read that you should just act like nothing's going on....

but ours seemed very comforted to be held and petted when they were scared. gosh, this is such a drag.

it's weird because the "pops" we hear outside from the neighborhood are so muffled....oh, well. they're

    fast asleep for now. :)

  8. Update on the drug thing, since more bangs are coming....i got some acepromazine from my vet yesterday. And bought an herbal remedy too. When the popping noises began, both dogs started panting and drooling and shaking. Gave them both one herbal thing, and 1 pill from the vet. It worked like a charm, they both just fell asleep and all of us had a better night for it. Hopefully that will happen tonight and tomorrow night, too. People in our neighborhood love to have their own mini fireworks displays.

  9. I understand exactly what you mean. I've had 3, and i would describe only one of them as being sort of a cuddler and a lover. That's Jackie, one of the two i have now. They are certainly not like some of my friends' little lap dogs. But, of course i wouldn't trade them for the world. Have you thought about getting another? You can adopt another that you know for sure is more affectionate, or maybe a puppy or pound dog of some other kind. Anyway, just give it more time! We've had Lola for 10 months, and she is the same way as yours, but keeps opening up to us more and more. And when those little moments happen, it is so special and great.

  10. when we are out for our last walk at night, like at 11pm, if Lola sees someone approaching in the dark, she will get in a very protective and alert mode, and let out a warning bark. she's usually shy around strangers. i don't know if she'd attack anyone, but she's so unpredictable sometimes, i wouldn't be surprised!

  11. i think we've decided to go with some plug in DAP diffusers, and whatever drug my vet recommends today. there's also a 5 minute recording of fireworks you can download from

Amazon, and start playing it at a very low volume and work your way up. i got that, too, but not sure if it's too late for that one. maybe for New Years. :/

  12. Her race name was Pals Janette. Her call name is Janette and my full name is Jeanette. How about that coincidence. She is 4 yo, brindle. Her racing career was over in August of 2008. From then she was in a kennel (poor baby) until December of 2009. The agency said she was adopted by a family and they returned her after a week because she didn't get along with the other dogs. I think it takes a little longer than a week to adjust.

Before we adopted her, we had our eyes on a grey who had lost his leg, but we had to wait until after the January 1 (we are mummers, a Philadelphia tradition if you are not familiar) and I didn't want to adopt a baby when I knew that he or she would be along a lot between Xmas and New Year's. So I told the agency that if Tre (the dog with the three legs) found a home, let him go there so he didn't have to wait any longer. We then chose another dog who had just been adopted. Janette was third on our list, but third time a charmer. I'm so glad that she came into our lives. She such a joy.

I don't know how to upload pictures yet, I'm still learning.

How may greys do you have? What are their ages and stories?

hi! we live in Florida and we have 2 greyhounds. i just wanted to say that i grew up in South Jersey, and every year we used to march in the mummers parade! not a "mummer", just a musician that somehow got hooked up with people who wanted us to march. :) i'm so glad you have a greyhound, and that she's working out great with your family.

  13. hello, i know this topic comes up every year. sorry if i'm repeating the same old question:

when jackie hears a firecracker, she trembles quietly for probably an hour. i hate to see her like this. aside from

turning the tv volume way up, and giving something holistic...would anyone recommend giving her a little xanax?

i plan to call the vet tomorrow for advice. i'm just wondering about your success stories, giving "people" drugs for this.

much thanks and happy 4th to all,
