  1. Thanks everyone! Her slice actually looks a ton better today. I guess being downed in triple antibiotic and rested all night helped. She just has some goo, gauze and a sock on right now. I'll go get the teeniest toddler sock that I can buy at Wally world today. I will have to try with some grocery bags... of course it's raining outside! I ordered some waterproof sled dog boots but they have to come int he mail.

  2. Rainy sliced her pad today. :( I've heard that toddler socks work well, but what size do I buy? Isn't there T2, T3, and T4? Also if her pad is just sliced not filleted open can I just Triple antibiotic it and stick a toddler sock on it for indoors? Or should I keep it vetwraped? I would think it would heal faster if it was allowed to breath...

  3. Thanks Tigger! I know exactly where Longwood Vet is, off Rt 52 and rt1. I just got off the phone with the U of Penn and Rainy's 2/6 heart murmur is going to put a stop in these plans. Didn't even think about that when I got the blood donor idea in my head. Guess we will just have to wait until we chip. :) Thanks for the info!

  4. His last race, according to tracklink, was 5-14-2008. Oftentimes Greyhound Data is not accurate with races. My Lucius is missing a year's worth of races on greyhound data. Go there, click on dog/raceline viewer and type his name in. His races are all there, unless he was at a track that does not report it.

Congrats on your new pup! :confetti

Not really trying to hijack.... but does anyone know how to read the chart from this site? I typed in Rainy's name and it looks like greyhound data is also missing a years worth of races for her. But are those her actual races that came up? Her name is listed in any of the last 3 columns

  5. I'm not really sure how to answer.... :blush I KNOW we should walk Rainy more but she seems to be fine with the current routine. She always gets 4 short potty walks a day. We don't have the luxury of a backyard.

Then we try to get her out and doing stuff as much as possible on the weekend. Dog park, playing with me parents pups, going for a long walk in the park, exploring new parks, etc

During the week she's lucky if she gets 1-3 short 30 minute walks at a local park. Normally it's 1 walk there a week. Lately because of the weather it's been too dangerous to walk so we've been playing run around the apt games. Or finding yummy things to chew on to drain energy.

I usually let her sniff around at the beginning and end of every walk. The rest of the walk is all business! Well sometimes... I have to get a little more strict about that :lol It's a work in progress

  6. I use a drop or two of virgin coconut oil on my dogs' bare spots if they look a little chappy. Totally safe for them to lick off, and it's a great moisturizer!

As far as hair regrowth, my dogs have been on Hair of the Dog for three and a half weeks and I am starting to see some new little hairs popping up on Rocket's butt. Nothing on Cassie's yet, but I still have hope ;)

Do you have a link to "Hair of the Dog"? I tried googling but only came up with tea companies... Maybe you are having tea time everyday? :lol

I'll try some coconut oil. Thanks! It'll smell like a tropical island at home.

When Carl's bald thighs and belly get dry I put some Aveeno on them, he's as smooth as silk for days.

Maybe I'll try that. I use Avon moisture therapy on myself. I'm just scared she's going to lick it.

I don't know if Rogaine is toxic for dogs, but originally, it was approved by the FDA as a blood pressure medication for humans. However, when people took it orally, then grew hair ALL OVER. So, it's not used for that purpose anymore, that I know of.

I'd be concerned if a dog licked it it might lower the dog's BP too much. Obviously, it wouldn't hurt for a dog to grow fur all over. Actually, since Rogaine grows HAIR (which grows continually) rather than FUR (which, I believe, grows seasonally), I wonder if it would work on a GH? I'd be more certain if we were talking about a poodle.

    DD

:rotfl Very interesting... I had no idea it could be an oral drug. :lol Now I just have to wait for Rainy to get high BP

  7. Pavé Maria does the reverse sneeze after she eats! I wouldn't be concerned. :) Might I add...your baby is just precious!

Thanks! :colgate She's the perfect dog for us! We are completely smitten. Although the kitties right now are getting even.... Rainy tried to eat them at first. Even took a chunk of fur out of one of them. Recently the cats have been ganging up on Rainy and running her away from her food! :lol I have to stand guard with a squirt bottle.

  8. Josey does it at least a few times a week. The first time I saw her reverse sneezing, I flipped out. I had only had her for a few days, and I thought she was having a heart attack or seizing...

My adoption coordinator had to talk me down!

LOL the first time she did it DH flipped out big time! I waited to get worried until it kept happening... again and again.. :colgate It is pretty scary to watch

  9. Yup. That's reverse sneezing. Dude does this a LOT! Picture what Rainey does over and over and over - wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez-wheez - he'll do this for several minutes. Sometimes he can't even get his breath.

Someone suggested trying 2 drops of Rescue Remedy when he starts having an "attack" and that has really worked wonders.

    greysmom :D

Really? Do you just put it on his tongue? We have the spray not the drops but I suppose it would work the same.

  10. Try a harness on her, I had reverse sneezing and duck like noises from my whippet (RIP)

It turned out that she had some trauma to her trachea from the greys playing too rough with her in the yard. BTW she did not die from this problem, I lost her to a rare blood disorder similar to Heather's Harmony

She's not a fan of walking on a harness... It seems to confuse her  She never does it while walking or with her collar on (tag collar is so loose and thin it doesn't count) She will occasionally do it in the car and mostly in the apartment. I suppose we could try getting her used to the harness...

  11. I love everyone here! :inlove I just called and canceled the rash vet appointment that I made an hour ago. In my defense I've only had her for 4 months and don't know what normal is yet.

Hm! Happy does a similar cough, but not quite the same thing. Vet wasn't worried when I couldn't get her to do it in the office.

What was the drug she took before? Maybe it was something with a side-effect of reducing the coughing?

No advice here. Hopefully it's just a tickle!

It was some antibiotic that she was on for a week of so. But that was 4 months ago.... I don't even have the bottle to see what it was

Sounds like reverse sneezing to me. My dogs all do it and it's nothing major. Stroking the throat helps. The link will explain more about it. Now it if were happening in those short-nosed dogs like Pugs then I would worry about tracheal collapse.

Those videos helped calm me down. That is exactly what she's doing. Thank you for posting that.

  12. When we first got Rainy we thought she had kennel cough, the vet couldn't hear anything, but gave us drugs just in case it was a mild case. After the drugs she stopped the quacky coughing for a bit. Only doing it occasionally and only a cough or two at a time. We chalked it up to maybe a tickle in her throat or some type of hairball!

Since this past Saturday she's been doing it lots more often. I actually was able to get a video of it after her bath (whole other story about goose poop) Someone else saw the video and thought it was reverse sneezing. Info about that here http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2335 I've never heard of it before.

    Exercise does not trigger it

    Eating does not trigger it

    She has a normal appetite

She's normally cheerful and bright, plays with her toys, etc.

Here are the videos I have. This is one of the bad episodes

What does it look like? Has anyone ever heard of this? Any other dogs do this? Could it be allergies? Should I have her scoped? x-ray of lungs? I never have a whole lot of faith in drs so I like to go to them informed about things that might need to be done.

Help please! Rainy apparently thinks we should spend our tax return on her!

  13. I must say that CM methods worked when Rainy did NOT want to give up her marrow bone last week. She let out this big snarl and I just inched in and stood over her bone until she jumped away on her own. The first time it took her almost 5 minutes of being tense and trying to guard the bone until she left. Felt like forever! Then we decided to practice! lol The times after that she left as soon as I stepped over top the bone. By the time we were done I felt comfortable enough to trade up and grab the bone with my hand. :)

  14. It's my understanding that certain types of anesthetic drugs cannot be used on these guys. Honesty if my vet was so rude about MY concerns and questions I would be requesting my records be faxed over to another office in a few weeks! lol

You need to feel comfortable with your vet. I would rather be using a vet who isn't as grey savvy, but is willing to listen and learn. For what I pay for an office visit they should answer all my questions in at least a professional manner. When I asked my vet before I even adopted if they were familiar with greyhounds and their anesthesia requirements he assured me they were and rattled off a bunch of medical terms pertaining to types of drugs. Made me feel better that the didn't trivialize my question.

It almost sounds like your vet was just trying to get you to pay for stitches and a whole ordeal when it wasn't really needed... Good job looking out for your pup's best interest!
