  1. I am very sorry. How sad to lose her so rapidly. She sounds incredibly sweet.
  2. Are you only trying different flavors of Nutro? Have you tried a different brand? "Best" isn't best for her if she doesn't like it. I think Tractor Supply carries Pro Plan, I've heard that's very palatable, and many greys do well on it (I've only used the Selects, but my dog loves it). Even if you tried a brand that isn't "good" (but might be inexpensive) and Anna liked it, you'd know for sure it isn't a medical condition, just pickiness.
  3. Have you tried digestive enzymes? I started using those with Beth about a week ago and they seem to have made a HUGE improvement in her poop (that, and/or she's really doing well with her new food, Pro Plan Selects salmon). I got a kind they sell at Petco called Fresh Digest; at any rate, they're widely available and don't require a prescription. I'm using probiotics too (Fortiflora), but I think the enzymes have made more of a difference. Perfectly firm poop this morning -- I could hardly believe it.
  4. Woohoo, I think we've got a winner. After the familiar poop issues while trying Blue Buffalo, Wellness (briefly), and Evo Red Meat, I switched Beth to Pro Plan Selects Salmon and Brown Rice, and after a couple of weeks she's now got firm poops for the first time. (I'm also giving her probiotics and digestive enzymes, and that may be helping as well.) She really likes the Pro Plan, and has regained some weight she lost on Evo. I'd like eventually to try to find something more seriously holistic that works for her, but for now, I'm sticking with it. (And happy I can collect those weight circles, too!)
  5. I've seen the dosage in terms of packets for various weights of dog listed online: http://www.drugs.com/vet/panacur-c-canine-dewormer.html
  6. Have you read the standard books on greyhound adoption by Cynthia Branigan and/or Lee Livingood? Those are the obvious starting points for research, and will address lots of questions you may have. Also, pretty much every adoption agency will require you to read one or the other before adopting.
  7. I'm sorry your boy is sick. I don't know the details of getting prescription medications for dogs at human pharmacies--it will depend on what dose you need--but the generic name for synthetic thyroid hormone (T4) is levothyroxine. The lowest human dose sold is .025 mg, I believe (25 mcg). (Well-informed human thyroid patients--I'm one--often stay away from the generics as they can be variable, and stick with one consistent brand. Have no idea if anyone thinks it matters for dogs, though.)
  8. I'm so sorry. I lost a kitty at the end of the summer too. He sounds so sweet. Rest in peace beautiful Sylvester.
  9. Welcome! We can't wait till you show us the Cash!
  10. Welcome! Great pics and wonderful screenname!
  11. It's from the "Thundercats" cartoon....My son named him and I eventually looked it up. The character was actually Snarf. We decided it was the German pronunciation. I'll give a report on Satuday.....Joey is actually Mac's "niece." Molotov was her grandfather... Jan I like "George" too btw. The world's-mellowest-cat who accompanied me from college into my 30's was named Ralph.
  12. Welcome from Iowa! Watch out, this forum is VERY addictive! You'll wonder how you ever lived without it!
  13. Welcome from Iowa! I visited Nova Scotia this past summer and just loved it, hope to return. We'll look forward to seeing pictures and hearing stories of Diamond!
  14. Awww, what a sweet girl she is. Some of us are very eager to hear how it goes Saturday (if it goes well, maybe some pics??). Schnerf -- what a great name!
  15. Oh, she is beautiful! So creamy-looking. She sounds adorable. I adopted my first grey at the end of August and I well remember how excited (and nervous) I was beforehand! A couple of months later -- still pretty excited, fortunately less nervous!
  16. Welcome, Beth, from Anne and, well, a doggie Beth!
  17. I don't have an answer to the soft poop issue overall (and am looking forward to what others have to say on it) BUT I have read that the anal gland thing is a myth -- that it's the muscles that express the gland, not the firm poop itself. Can't vouch for the correctness of that, however (and would never have guessed a few months ago that I'd be opining on such matters in a public forum!!)
  18. Welcome to you and Boogie! In addition to being handsome, he sounds like quite a character!
  19. Oh, very exciting! So hoping she will be a good girl! Can't wait to hear the update.
  20. Oh, this is exciting!! I've been thinking about this thread all evening.
  21. My girl had D two weeks ago -- I think from some liverwurst I put in her Kong, though she hasn't achieved firm poop yet on the high end foods I was trying anyway (most recently Evo). I can't say the Flagyl has made any perceptible difference, and we're almost through the course. The D stopped but poops continued really mushy, worse than they'd been. Finally got an OK from the vet to try a food change -- he'd wanted me to keep on Evo for the time being. We're in the middle of a switch now and things seem to be improving, though to jury's still out on to what degree.

    Thank You

How awful. I am so very sorry. Rest in peace Corina.
  23. There's a sweet black cat-safe girl at the kennel, Joey, who's an incredible smiler -- bet she is pretty witty ! She's been there quite a long time, I wish she could find a home.
  24. That is so cool! They're half-siblings!! I love that you can know this kind of stuff about your greyhound. Also, I saw in your profile that you're an English professor--I'm getting my MA in English, hopefully to graduate in May. You have my dream job Apparently we have good taste in both dogs and careers! Well I'm not having the most academically productive semester . . . I teach my classes then run home to spend time with Beth! Congrats on your upcoming degree. Love your screenname, btw -- I get the allusion. If you do a search on the site you can find others whose dogs are related too -- I know GreytHoundPoet's Lucius is one. I know, it's cool, isn't it? And that we know their exact birthdays, too. Here's a photo that sort of captures the similar face I saw in Oscar and Beth -- of course they probably just look like greyhounds:
