I'm sorry for your loss. Jerry obviously loved your family. Godspeed, sweet boy.
  2. I'm so sorry Meredith.
  3. I'm so sorry. We're saying a prayer for you. Beverly
  4. Thinking good thoughts for you and your Toby! Beverly
  5. My Mandy is a corn-dog. We went through lots of "fun" before it was diagnosed. She actually has (or has had) corns on 8 different toes, so amputation was not really an option. My vet is an expert at corn hulling. She also suggests putting Abreva on the spots where the corns have been hulled (yes, I buy cold sore meds for my dog's feet). Also, Kera-solv (which you can get in the foot care section of any drugstore) is good to keep the paw pads soft, which helps prevent the corns from recurring or make the corns smaller if they do come back. I put the Kera-solv on in the evening and put toddler sized socks on Mandy before bed. We've had a long road, but we're improving. At first Mandy's corns came back within a week, now they come back about every 4-5 weeks and they are much smaller and easier to hull. Some dogs are lucky, they'll have the corns hulled and they dont' come back, I'm not so lucky. Therapaws are a Godsend for Mandy. She wears them whenever we are out of the house. (http://www.therapaw.com/). Also, there is a good website about corns. (http://www.grassmere-animal-hospital.com/corns.htm). I don't know where you are located, but a greyt vet in Northern Virginia is Dr. Christine Kellogg at Great Falls Animal Hospital, she is very grey-savvy, and takes care of so many greyhounds (and their corns) that the staff calls her "Dr. Corn".
  6. Sending prayers for your handsome boy! Beverly
  7. Sending good thoughts Puck's way!
  8. When my Dalmatian went to the bridge, I had several months of her Viokase ($140 a bottle!), plus several types of pain meds (including controlled substances), antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medication, and 29 pounds of prescription dog food (she had Pancreatic Insufficiency). Since Pancreatic Insufficiency is most prevalent in German Shepherds, I contacted one of the local Shepherd Rescue groups. They were thrilled to get the meds and food as they had several dogs with PI. They received approximately $500 worth of supplies they didn't have to pay for and I got a tax break.
  9. What beautiful pups! My best friend worked in Roanoke for several years, so I've been there many times. It's a nice area. Beverly
  10. My Mandy has suffered from thunder phobia for some time. I tried the natural remedies and shirts/covers, but nothing seemed to really work. The DAP diffuser does help some. Well, we had a major series of storms about a month ago. Mandy got so freaked out, I was sure she was going to have a heart attack. I could see her heart trying to beat out of her chest. She had the frantic bug-eyed look, was pacing through the house, panting and drooling. I took her to see our vet, who suggested we start with Amitriptyline (50mg every 12 hours) since she also has SA. We tried that, had some light storms about a week later and she was a tiny bit better. So, talked to the vet again, and we tried adding Xanax (1/2 of a .5 mg tablet to repeat every 4-5 hours as needed) to the mix on an as-needed basis for acute situations. We made it through July 4 with a thunderstom and some idiots setting off fireworks and firecrackers a few feet from our balcony. She definitely noticed the noise, but didn't get frantic. I'm hoping we are on the right track, I hate seeing her so upset. Every dog is different, just like every person is different, but hopefully you can find the right mix for your baby! Beverly
  11. It's funny--Mandy ran for a long time (134 races), but now is on the coma end of the energy scale. I think she is one of the few greyhounds who likes to sleep in, I usually wake her up. One of my jokes is that I take her for a morning drag since she does NOT want to go outside in the morning. When she gets around a group of greys, she is more animated, but still pretty low-key. I contacted one of the tracks where she raced and purchased a tape of several of her races. When I played it, she yawned and rolled over. She definitely takes retirement seriously. I look forward to hearing more about Sally and Sophie! Beverly Thanks, I think so too. But I'm biased! Of course, I think all greyhounds are beautiful! I actually lurked for a while before adopting--I was laid up due to some surgery, so I spent the time cruising the Internet doing research on Greyhounds. It is nice to be able to see what issues other folks have and how they handle them. Beverly Hi Colleen, I knew they were closely related, they just look too much alike! I wish my situation were different, I'd love to adopt him, but there's no room at the inn right now. See you soon! Beverly I love your crew, too. My aunt would go crazy, she loves black cats and black dogs! Reston is a nice area, but it is getting too crowded. Mandy loves all of the wooded pathways--we can walk so many different ways without having to cross a street. Beverly
  12. She turned 8 on July 1. I love the ears, too! When I was thinking about adopting, her picture on Greyhound Welfare's website just made me smile. So, I read the biography (in which she was nicknamed "bunny head" because she keeps those ears up most of the time) and decided I just had to meet her, even though I had planned on waiting for another month or so to adopt. Thanks for the welcome! Beverly
  13. Hello, I just wanted to post greetings. I have finally joined GT, though I've lurked for quite some time! My name is Beverly. I adopted Mandy (BB's Luv) in May 2005 from Greyhound Welfare. She is such a joy and I am blessed to have her as part of my life. She has the lowest prey drive of any dog I've ever met--the only squirrel she has tried to chase is the one who actually ran across her foot! I couldn't blame her once the squirrel touched her. We have an abundance of little fluffy dogs and outside cats in my neighborhood, and she just stands there and wags her tail gently. She is also an attention-hog. If someone passes her while we are out and they don't stop and talk to her, she gives a look like "hey, what's wrong, come and pet me!" I appreciate the tips I've read here on GT--she had terrible SA when I adopted her. We've worked hard and she still doesn't like when I leave, but is definitely much better. Also, she is a terrible thunder (and firework)-phobe. Thanks to some of the posts here on GT, I worked with my vet to get her on Xanax, and I'm pleased to say she is not frantic right now, even though there are some lunkheads setting off firecrackers about 50 feet from my balcony. She's actually laying on her dog bed, not panting or drooling, she only looked up twice. Regards, Beverly I watched the tutorial on posting photos, I hope I get this right!
