  1. Hi guys, So recently I've been having some issues with my girl Caily. Just a little background about her: She's a little over 9 years old and has always been a pretty healthy dog. The only consistent issue we had with her was having accidents during the night, which we believed to be behavioral for the most part. As of the past couple of weeks she has lost a lot of weight. At one point last year she was overweight at 76lbs and we were able to slim her up to a nice 64lbs by March of this year(a little slim for my taste but the vet said she looked excellent). As of today she is 54.2lbs and looks terrible. She went from being a wonderful eater to putting her nose up to everything and as a result dropped a lot of weight. She also went from acting like the obnoxious, loveable puppy she's always believed to be to suddenly turning into a lethargic, boney mess. On Sunday I gave her a dose of over the counter dewormer that kills hook, round, and whip worms as a prevenative and sure enough she passed some whipworms in her stool. Since then she has started to perk up a little and has eaten a little bit of hot dogs, steak, cheese, just anything to get her to eat. On Tuesday I took her to the vet. They did a fecal (negative), chest xrays (looked great) and bloodwork. I recieved the results of the bloodwork today and they show the real picture of whats going on. I luckily had a senior wellness exam done back in March so we had good results to compare to. The results from March are : BUN- 28 CREATININE- 2.2 TOTAL PROTEIN 6.0 ALT- 1352 mU/l those same tests as of today are BUN- 56 CREATININE- 3.98 TOTAL PROTEIN-4.6 and ALT- 290 U/L. I am awaiting the results of her Urinalysis which I will have tomorrow to confirm the vets suspicions of Kidney disease/ Failure. I was hoping to see if you all had any good recommendations for websites to read, advice and personal experiences. My biggest concern right now is I know they will want to put her on a Prescription Diet. I would much prefer to avoid that if at all possible. The cost of the food itself does not deter me its the ingredients in the food. So if anyone also had any food recommendations as well that would be amazing. Thank you for reading this and any advice! Lauren
  2. Hi guys! I don't post on here very often, I'm more of a lurker. I was hoping you all could help me with interpreting the bloodwork results from my girl, Caily. She's almost 9 years old and hasn't ever had any health issues before but during her wellness exam I went ahead and did a senior panel just as a precaution. The vet said everything looked normal except her kidney values were a little high. But I do know that greyhound blood values typically differ from normal values. Her results were the following: WBC- 7.6 RBC- 7.26 HGB- 17.2 HCT/PCV- 53.0 MCV- 73 MCHC- 32.5 Polys- 75 Lymphs- 18 Monos- 5 Eos- 1 Platelet count- 261 BUN- 28 Creatinine- 2.2 Total Protein- 6.0 Albumin- 2.7 T4 RIA 1.3 She did end up with a mild UTI which shes now on antibiotics for. I know most of this is probably normal, but of course I'm a big worrier about anything being wrong with my girl. Thank you all so much!
  3. Mine tend to shed more during spring, once it warms up. It might help if you brush them once a week with a rubber curry comb you can get them pretty cheap at walmart, the stress may play a part in it but mine havent ever really had a problem with that. Some greyhounds tend to shed more and sometimes a hard winter can cause them to have a thicker undercoat during winter and then they have more to shed during the spring. Hope that helps you some
  4. I was worried about you guys. They showed it on the news that Norman had a tornado. We just barely missed getting hit by one and we didn't know it; the sirens never went off. I can't wait to see her! She was one of the best fosters we've had yet
  5. Shelly are you going to Funday with Fasthound on June 5? I was the one who fostered Ady Bea and would love to see her again Lauren
  6. We used it for one summer after a non stop battle with fleas. She was completly covered in them and losing weight, nothing worked except for Capstar and Comfortis. This last summer we didn't need to use it. I don't know if the fleas weren't bad or if having taken the medicine previously but it has worked great for us
  7. My Caily is also very shy but she is AMAZING with kids, she has to get to know adults first but with kids they can run at her and she will just stand there and take it. But outside she likes to nip at they're ankles unless she is on a leash. All the kids in my neighborhood love to come pet her? Could you ask a neighbor with kids to bring them over one day to gauge Amelia's reaction to them and then start from there?
  8. I had a similar situtation with one of my foster dogs, I just made sure to clean it twice a day(once in the morning and once in the evening). I put on a triple anti-biotic and also sprayed Bactine on it which helped clean it and also numbs it a little. Hope this helps a little and that she heals up fast.
  9. Anybody in the Tulsa, Ok area. I saw a post for Bartlesville, would you still like a play date?
  10. I can sit up to two greys depending on if I have a foster at the time and I can do other breeds. I have a four year old of my own who loves to have friends over. I also have no cats so they do not have to be cat safe. I live in Coweta, Ok which is about a 15 minute drive south of Tulsa. During the summer I'm home all day almost everyday. I can have references if neede. You can email me at cailysmom@cox.net or call at 918-637-0075
  11. We had a terrible problem with caily and fleas. She picked them up anywhere. We tried sentinal, advantage, frontline and capstar. the capstar killed them but we had to use them all the time. we also tried every trick- bombed the house , diatemaceous earth, dawn soap. still had fleas. I finally broke down and gave her the new product, comfortis which is similar to capstar but last 30 days per pill. It's kind of expensive but the good news is i can take her off the sentinel and go down to a generic heart worm medication. if you have a problem and can't get rid of it i highly suggest it. occasionally when we come back from walks i find fleas on her but they are dead!!!!
