  1. A greyhound is a sight hound-nature says they hunt to get food to stay alive- by sight. They'll use their nose to but regular dogs can't compete with a greyhounds sight.  My greyhound Octane is an excellent Nosework dog and has 2 titles earning both on the first try at the individual levels. Doing Nosework is fun with greyhounds! -but I digress.  They can see a paper cup blowing across the ground a half mile away-their genes will tell them to chase it.  So the answer is yes. The only way to be safe is to maintain positive control at all times.  There is a possible answer for you however.  A quality bungee leash can clip to your belt or anything else and keep your hands free to read etc.  It is specially designed for this and is safe unlike the deadly extendable leashes unsuspecting owners are duped into using. NEVER NEVER use an extendable leash.  Here is a quality bungee leash. Just to be extra safe I would clip it to a safe harness and not their neck collar (they have enough neck issues already).  That long slender neck designed so they can reach down and grab the game on the run should be protected from as much force as possible with regards to everything. There are some cheaper bungee leashes and with different features etc. at this site which is known for being good quality. https://www.rayallen.com/ray-allen-tactical-bungee-leash-w-frog-clip/ I have the bungee leash in the link for use with my working dog but wouldn't hesitate to clip it on my hound if it would be convenient.  Notice the 'clip' called a Frog Clip.  That is safe and is as reliable as you can get.  Most of the regular snaps are junk and as we all know it is not unusual for them to fall off or wear out prematurely etc. and they are certainly not strong(don't forget a greyhound is a large and powerful dog). The frog clip won't fall off and it won't break and in an emergency it will release while under any kind of pressure.  IMO it is the safest, longest lasting, and most reliable leash clip on the market. It is imported and it cost ~$50 which is why the leashes cost so much that have it but it is worth the peace of mind alone.  I have had regular snaps fall off  etc and I don't want to go there again. The frog clip actually was picked up from the aviation community/parachutes etc. Thank you so much for caring so deeply about the houndies safety! IMO they are special and deserve only the best of everything including their equipment.  A few measly bucks spent on the best equipment could save their life.

You have no way of knowing what's going on with the teeth and bone under the gums without anesthesia and xrays. Scaling tartar is okay if the dog can tolerate it, but many cant. It's also not a replacement for a real dental check exam and cleaning. Doing those while your dog is young enough will help avoid having to put him under in his senior years to deal with problems that weren't caught due to the lack of real dental care.

    EXACTLY! Very well put.

So sorry you are going through this with your hound. I would use manuka honey on the wound.

dogbooties.com makes fleece booties that are very soft and have a decent velcro to keep them on. I purhased them in size small for my hound and they work well.

Website has a sizing chart and how to measure foot. I was apprehensive of the size small but they did fit well. They won't hold up to outdoor use and are inexpensive and ship quickly.

    Good luck.

Another vote for manuka honey. It i even effective against MRSA and these days you might need it for that.

  4. My heart is breaking for you. My deepest sympathy. :f_red

You are racked and torn by the pain of our separation and it blinds you to that which is right in front of you...me.

I want you to do me a favor and go back in time with me. Remember the glorious day I came to you - was I not the most intriguing creature you'd ever met? Did I not make you laugh and giggle? Did I not look at you with such adoration that you wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of your life with me? I wanted this too.

Remember the days when I was in my prime and we did many things together. You were so proud of me! I was a good friend and I took care of you. When you didn't have a lot of time for me because of your obligations, I waited patiently for you. I was always there when you needed me. Did I not look at you with such acceptance and patience that perhaps at times you felt a bit unworthy? You were never unworthy in my eyes.  I couldn't get enough of you.

Remember the last time we saw each other with earthly eyes. You tried to be brave. I know you so well, better than anyone else in the world. Did I not look at you with such pure trust and love that you yearned only to hold me close and keep me with you always? Did you not promise that you would love me forever? I believed you.

Remember the depth of love in my eyes when I looked at you. Who created this love? Would the Creator diminish the song of our laughter that grew and flourished in this love? I am no longer an earthly figure, this is true. My body was only part of who I really am and it would have been but a mere shell on earth if it were not filled to overflowing with my soul, my spirit and my loving light. When we met you thought I was beautiful and wonderful. What kind of relationship would we have had if this were all that I'd been? How could you have loved me if I'd had no spiritual substance?

You cry because you miss me, this I understand. I miss you too - I miss the belly rubs, hugs and kisses that we shared. But life does go on beyond these wonderful, fulfilling physical connections. I came to this place to continue on in a new life, not because I didn't love you anymore or because I wanted something better. I came here because it was time for me to go to the next phase of my existence, something all living creatures must do eventually. It is the normal progression of life. I was not taken away from you because you cannot take away that which was never owned. My presence in your life was and is a gift to be cherished and honored just as I cherish and honor you.

….when I took leave of my earthly body I left a little something behind for you. You can't touch it, hold it or examine it, for what I left behind is far too uninhibited for confinement. I left in your tender care a piece of my soul. I placed it right next to your own which is quite fitting as we were always side by side in our earthly life together. I love you too much to have left you with nothing but memories that tend to fade and grow cloudy as the years go by. I love you too much to have vanished without a trace. How selfish it would be of me to remove love and light from your life.

I understand your tears, each one you shed is testament to your love for me and I am honored and humbled. But don't forget the good things we shared - remember and smile. This is an honor for me as well. When you need me I will be here. Close your eyes, relax, take slow, deep breaths and picture me in your mind. Shut off the world and your notions of what you think death is and give me a chance. Look for the subtle signs I send you. Don't stop being proud of me, I am a friend to be proud of, I am still your friend and soul mate. Don't memorialize the death of my body but instead honor and celebrate my never-ending life for it is eternal and forever as is my love for you.

    Until we meet again...

  5. I have had hounds that when the rabbit escaped- the hounds furiously go digging under the fence where the rabbit got out and even injure themselves on the chain link.  If he's that kind of hound he could do a number on his feet/legs if there was that skinny chicken wire there.  Just something to consider.

  6. It is simply heart breaking that Leela had to cross over. Her beautiful spirit lives on and always will.  Nothing can take away the legacy of love which she obviously perfected.  She IS spirit-just like us-and the truth is she has more 'power' to share love now from the other side than she did when she was here in body.  Thank you for sharing her with us-we are all enriched by more love now having known her. :heart

  7. I think she is just throwing out one of the famous "endearing quirps" that greyhounds have.

I feed all my dogs several ounces (2-6) of 2%milk after every evening meal.  They LOVE it. It is their dessert.  Sometimes they will drink it before finishing their food they like it so much.  I have had many dogs including 10 greyhounds and everyone of them liked milk.  As long as they are not lactose intolerant it is good for them.  Whats not to like about high quality protein, calcium, vitamins & minerals & more?  I also believe it helps with allergies to.  Of course honey made by the local bees is the standard but if you can't get that it appears to me that milk from local cows helps.  I love milk also. I grew up on a dairy farm.  It is natures most nearly perfect food!
