Thanks for that terrific update, Nancy!!! :yay

Glad to hear that he is not shaking and panting anymore, Robin. Hoping that he will eat something tomorrow. Continued good thoughts for beautiful Beau :goodluck

Oh no Poor Beau, poor you. This is what I hate the most about IBD, you stress out for months and months until FINALLY you find some sort of balance whereby things work or at least are generally calm, and when you least expect it - BANG, flare-up. Been there too many times. I hope this is just a small setback, Robin, and that Beau will get better quickly with Flagyl. I remember only too well all that you went through back in 2009 - heartbreaking
Please keep us posted. And, as hard as it is, please try to take deep breaths. You are in my thoughts.

I have no experience with LS, Robin, just wanted to wish the best outcome for Elsie Lou as you figure out the best treatment for her.

I remember.

Gorgeous boy and gorgeous photos! (his girfriend is adorable too )
I am so jealous of that beach! It looks perfect for greys, really well insulated! I loved Victoria and Vancouver Island in general.

Personally, I would stay away from acupuncture and chiropractic. There is no evidence that acupuncture is effective at all (many, many clinical trials and meta-analyses have been conducted that have shown this again and again), and chiropractic "therapy" falls in the same category.
Unless you have personal experience, I don't see how you can comment.
Nonsense. Experience has nothing to do with it. Experience is subjective and, as such, totally unreliable. That's precisely why we came up with the scientific method, which involves rigorous testing to determine whether an alleged remedy actually works. All the meds we give to our hounds to help with a condition underwent a thorough testing process again and again before they were proven to be safe, and before they could be approved and then marketed. Not so with "alternative medicine", which is completely unregulated.
I have 15 years experience with alternative medicine, and chiropractic & acupuncture work.
I'm afraid that the scientific evidence obtained from years of small and large-scale randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies completely contradicts your statement. However, I do not want to hijack the OP's thread so I will leave it at that, and maybe start another thread.

Wow, I am jealous that you have a greyhound-only boarding kennel near you! I know it's nowhere near as ideal as being able to take them with you, but what I wouldn't give for that around here! My Sagan is scared of other breeds a lot of the time and an all-breed kennel is out of the question
Some good suggestions above. Good luck!

I am so very sorry you're going through this with Chad Poor boy. I understand and sympathise with the worry and stress you must be feeling over this.
Personally, I would stay away from acupuncture and chiropractic. There is no evidence that acupuncture is effective at all (many, many clinical trials and meta-analyses have been conducted that have shown this again and again), and chiropractic "therapy" falls in the same category. There is some evidence that it can provide mild relief for back pain, but the benefit is considered very modest and certainly no greater than the relief that can be obtained through the use of conventional meds (NSAIDs) and exercise. Chiropractic "adjustments" can also be dangerous.
Here is a good piece from a vet's blog: Veterinary Chiropractic
And yet, even though they have not been proven effective, these treatments can be very expensive. If you are frustrated with your vet, I would seek advice from other veterinary professionals. I understand your anger at the thought that the vets you consulted were unable to identify the only onset of LS.
On a separate note - PLEASE don't feel that you have let Chad down. I am sure that nothing could be further from the truth. It's very hard for us -- regular folk with no veterinary expertise -- to know how to proceed when we notice behavior that's out of the ordinary. That's why we consult veterinary professionals and expect them to have a better idea of what's going on. You couldn't possibly have known what the matter was. Please don't beat yourself up

Minor thing, but thought I should mention it. I just accessed GT from my iPhone. When I tap on the menu, the icons displaying the various options are excessively large -- they take up the whole display, so much so that the words "new content" are partially hidden and there is some text overlap:
Any way to tweak that?
The buttons are big, but I don't have the overlap on mine.
Mine is displaying properly as well.
Ha. Good to know, thanks. I have an older generation iPhone (3GS), that may be the issue. I'll be upgrading soon anyway, so no biggie.

Loving the new, cleaner look. LOVE IT. Also, the navigation is much improved and flows much better, and most importantly (let's get our priorities right ), the emoties list is way more accessible and easier to use. And that's all I've explored so far.
Bravo!

I always believe in increasing exercise rather than decreasing food. So, you could increase her food intake, and lengthen one of her walks somewhat. You know your dog best, so I hesitate to give advice on food quantities - every dog is different. My first thought was that 2 cups a day total for a 73lb dog seems a little on the meager side, but then I feed my 80lb boy just 3 cups a day and I'm sure some would say that's too little as well (it isn't, and if I fed him 4 cups a day he would be overweight).
Maybe you could feed her a low-fat snack before bed, to tide her over? My boys get a large cookie each at bedtime.

Oh no Poor Spriet
Why does the vet thinks it's going to get worse if the piece is removed?

Oh, thank goodness she is home. She has been in my thoughts and will remain there as she heals!

Uss Maxi - August 9, 2000-June 4, 2012

Deb, what a beautiful tribute to your brave girl. I believe that Maxi must have known somehow that she was home when she stepped paw in the Magoo household. She was a lucky girl to find you and John: you are special people. And, fittingly, you are special in part thanks to hounds like Maxi, and all the other hounds you so lovingly care for and who leave indelible paw prints on your hearts.
Rest in peace, sweet Maxi.
