  1. Update on Fran--- DH took her to get her stitches out, and vet said she is doing well. She is just now acting like she is in any pain- the day she had her stitches out Vicky bumped her chin and she yelped like she had been killed. She has licked a spot raw on her leg- vet said this is probably residual pain. So, she is back on low dose of pain meds and we are trying to keep that spot covered, but the vet wrap keeps falling down- we don't have jimjams that cover the spot completely and the sock I put on her when we went to bed managed to come off in the night. But, she is currently roaching next to me... with ETS (of course, no camera.)

  2. We are going to be in the Chantilly/Herndon area for Christmas... with the girls. My parents will be keeping them for a couple of days while we go up to PA- if you, or any other GTers in that area wouldn't mind being "on-call" for them if they have any issues, I would greatly appreciate it! If you are willing, please PM me.

  3. Being on this end, it was all terrible. It is amazing how resilient these pups can be. I am so glad the worst of this whole ordeal is over, and we can laugh at her acute ETS problem. I keep thinking if we had boarded them while we went away, this wouldn't have happened... had we not gone, this wouldn't have happened... But you know, in the end, accidents happen. If it wasn't this, it might have been something else (like Vicky trying to stick her head in the oven to get closer to the turkey...) Thankfully, it wasn't worse than it was, and the docs could fix her... For that I am thankful.

  4. She was doing well when I left for work this morning. She was passed out in my bed, under the covers with her head on my pillow- a pretty typical morning. She snuggled all night long- kept each other warm. When I came home from class last night she was wagging her tail like a mad woman. She is definately feeling better.

She has a lot of swelling in her face, and numerous stiches on the bottom of her chin, so we are doing all we can to make sure she isn't bumped (or knock herself). She takes her pills like a champ. I put the antibiotics in some yogurt last night, and she ate around them.... then snarfed up the pills!

    Thanks for asking!

PS: forgot to mention, yesterday while she was here at work, my principal came in to see her. Fran was so excited to see her. Her tail was wagging... and she SMILED!!!! It is wonderful to have a great boss who understand the need to protect and spoil our fur babies, but it is even more wonderful to have a boss that the fur babies think are awesome!!

  5. I have Fran here at work with me  ... she is passed out. The vet showed me her new x-rays and what he did. He wired the two pieces of her jaw together with a single wire. He attempted to do a second one, but the root of her canine tooth was too close. She lost three teeth. We go back in 10 days to get the stitches out. She is on soft foods of course, but should be healing quickly. He was telling me the break could have been a lot worse and we were lucky. He also said she was a wonderful patient and they all loved her there, as she shared her snuggly side with them.

  6. Sorry for the late posting, but I received a call from the vet around 3pm telling us that Fran came out of surgery fine, and she was resting comfortably. I have been running constantly since... I wanted to go by and see her this evening, but I had class- but they said we could pick her up tomorrow morning. Still not sure exactly how they fixed her, I just know she is supposedly fixed!

  7. I took Fran to the vet this morning for her surgery. :sad1 Since she will already be under they are going to clean her teeth (at least the ones they don't have to pull). Please keep her in your thoughts today, and I will let you know as soon as I get the call that she has come through surgery, and everything is going to be ok. It appears she is going to have to stay with the vet for two days. I don't know how we (especially Vicky!) are going to deal with her being gone that long- but it will be worth it to have her back and healthy when this is all over.

  8. DH to Fran to our vet today (e-vet said we had to, to get a surgery referral, even if we were to bring her back there for surgery), and he said she is definitely going to need surgery--- ok, I know this by now, schedule it! :headwall I am getting frustrated by this whole thing now, but there is nothing I can do as I am in my finals week at school and I am in major crunch mode. Not to mention I have to actually show up at work occasionally. I know DH has to work as well- my question is- why is it so hard to get someone to set a time and date for a surgery that we all know has to happen!?!?!?!

According to DH: The vet's surgery schedule is booked this entire week, but he might be willing to come in on Friday (his day off). He's is still considering all the best options as to how to repair this. Where the break is located makes it a tough fix. He said it couldn't be wired, and there is not enough foundation to place a plate. DH said they were talking about nuts and bolts and bone graphs... There is a major tooth at the location of the break, with a deep root, so it will difficult to drill there... He is supposed to contact us tomorrow with more definitive plans.

I only saw her for a few minutes before I came in here to start working on another paper... (had to take a break) but she appears to be stable, and is snuggling with DS on the floor while they watch tv. She's been wagging her tale, eating and drinking. She has been a trooper, and for her sake I really don't want this to go on much longer.

  9. Here is part of Fran's x-rays- according to the report: fracture at the lower left premolar. The removed a loose fragment of bone (from the premolar). She was sent home with Clindamycin and more Tramadol. The premolar will need to be removed and the mandibular fracture repaired surgically. It appears her incisors are only broken at the tips, and should be ok. She is home now, and laying in bed with me. She is very sensitive to every movement.

  10. She's awake! Not a happy pup, but awake. DH said she is crying- loudly- to express her displeasure. They are keeping her a little longer, as she is still very groggy. They sewed up the holes in her mouth- and gave her an antibiotic (it bothers me that the GA vet didn't give us any, and that I failed to ask for any). Also gave us a few more pain pills to get through the next few days. She is coming home, but we have to make an appt with our regular vet tomorrow to have surgery, as they said it was definately broken, and just wiring her jaw shut was not going to fix it. DH is bringing the x-rays home on disk, so I might be able to post those later. I am just happy she is coming home- maybe now I can get some work done!!

  11. I should have gone with DH to the vet hospital- I am getting none of my school work done! I only have five papers and three finals to study for... nothing major.

He just sent another txt- the e-vet had to put her under with anesthetic to do the exam and x-rays. DH said the sedation didn't do anything (not sure what they used?!) She does have exposed bone in her mouth; therefore, without seeing the films, they do believe it is a break. Apparently a large number of traumas just came in (never realized that the pet ER's were as crazy busy as the human ones), and my Fran has been pushed down in the order of importance- so it is taking a bit longer than expected to read the films (when they first arrived, there was no one there, so it was like a private clinic).

Please keep Fran in thought and prayer while she is under anesthesia. :hope I have dreaded the day this would happen- knowing eventually she would have to be, if for nothing but a dental- and to not be there is even harder. As soon as I hear something from DH I will post an update.

  12. We didn't take Fran back to the vet hospital in GA- she had a healthy appetite and we were able to get fluids in her. We were able to get the pain pills in her with no problem (she loves pumpkin bread). Although she laid around the remainder of our time in GA (I am sure that is mostly pill induced), she continued to act like there was no pain or discomfort. She smiled at us, and wagged her tail often. She did really well on the ride home, only yelping once when Vicky accidentally conked her chin. Most of the ride home Vicky snuggled her, had their legs intertwined, and Vicky's head on Fran's back. I wish the camera had not been packed away.

Anyways, we have returned to FL, and first order of business was taking Fran to the vet hospital here. DH has been there with her just over an hour, and I have had no reports yet. Like I said before, food has not been an issue- as long as it is the wet stuff, she is eating fine. She was refusing to drink water, and would only take a few dribbles from a straw, but DH made some turkey broth and put a little in her water (using the turkey necks, so there was no added salt or other seasonings) and she lapped it all up.

Vicky isn't doing well with Fran gone. She is acting like a lost pup, not knowing what to do. Friday night we had Fran sleep downstairs with my DD (in case she continued to bleed) and Vicky was upstairs with us. She whimpered and cried until we took her downstairs, where she and I slept with Fran and DD.

ETA: DH just sent a text saying she was sedated for an oral exam and x-rays. They will determine if she needs surgery, and we would have to go back for that. So, it sounds like (from what you can get in a text msg) that if she doesn't need surgery, they will do what they need to today- otherwise, we will continue to have an eventful week around here. Fran did ask if she could add something to her SS wish list... all she wants for Christmas is her three front teeth!

  13. She had a good night... DD and her snuggled on the dog bed all night. The bleeding (from her teeth) has almost completely stopped. She is still only taking water from a straw and will eat wet food and pumpkin- from a spoon. She is playing this up best she can, drama queen- one of the many reasons we love her. She doesn't appear to be in much pain, but like I said yesterday- she has never indicated she was in pain. Will let you all know what we find out today.

  14. Pain meds- they gave her a shot of something that they said should last about 8 hrs. He gave us enough Tramadol to go through Sunday. Not sure how easy it will be to get those down her. Normally she will take pills easily, but things are a bit different right now.

I am sure she will be ok tonight- I am just having those paranoid mommy moments...

  15. Fran had an accident at grandma's house this morning, and we have spent the majority of the day at the emergency vet hospital. She was doing zoomies in the yard (yes, there is a fence) when the ground disappeared and she landed hard on her face. There is a low level retaining wall on the far end of the yard that they had both been staying away from, and honestly I hadn't given it much thought, but when they are running they don't stop when you yell, even with the VOG yell they ignore you.

Through palpation it is not clear there is a break in her jaw, as she did not react in any way(?!?!?), and no break could be felt. The vet did not do x-rays, saying he preferred to wait until tomorrow when they could sedate her, to ensure they took clear pictures (and the fact that there was no x-ray technician there). He said she would need to be sedated to put the jaw back into place (if it was dislocated) or put to sleep if it was broken, so they could perform surgery. That team wasn't there, but will be tomorrow. Two different vets examined her, and they had the same opinion. They believe it is broken, but did not understand why she didn't react when they were palpating it. She has several broken teeth, and her mouth is bleeding some. Not nearly as bad as it was at first, but enough that I am staying with her. He said most of the broken teeth would have to be extracted. The jaw itself is definitely not lined up the way it should be.

I am uncomfortable with our decision to bring her home, thinking we should have left her at the hospital- but DH wanted her here. He is upset that he didn't have her on a leash (even though it was a yard with a fence) and is blaming himself. He didn't want to leave her in a strange place, a lone- and felt there was nothing they could do for her we couldn't do. There is (iv's and immediate attention if there was a change), but in the end I agreed to bring her home. He is definitely feeling guilt right now, and has said he will spare no expense to fix her (Good thing, as the estimate we received today was close to $3,000 if it is broken).

I starting writing this much earlier today- she has not moved from the spot she laid down in at 3:30 (4 hrs ago), but has taken in some water. She won't drink out of the bowl, but will accept water placed in her mouth through a straw. She took a small lick of some pumpkin- but the vet said not to be as concerned with food as we should be with the water. We will be taking her in again in the morning to determine the full extent of her injuries. We will have the vet do whatever they need to if it is just dislocated, but if it is broken, we will be taking her home (we are in GA, and live in FL) to have our vet take care of her- She is being very calm (she has been the calmest of all of us through this whole thing) and just wants to have someone sitting or laying next to her.

Has anyone ever taken care of a Grey with a broken or dislocated jaw? If broken, and she does require the surgery, any idea the type of recovery she will have? What we should be expecting?

It is breaking my heart to see her in pain and hurt. I am feeling helpless. :cry1 Please keep Fran in your thoughts, and pray for the best case scenario.

  16. Is there is a specific treat Fran can have? Does she have a favorite stuffy? What color does she look good in? What do her humans like?

Uh oh! We are being double teamed! That is especially evil!

Most of the answers are here. and to elaborate more?

Treats: Of course, she loves cheese, yogurt and pumpkin... never has enough of those yummies.

As for stuffies- She loves noise. Anything that makes noise. The thing that is great about the fire hydrant is that she can't break the squeaker, so it continues to make noise. Floppy stuffies are good too, she loves a good kill, especially when she can whack a human or Vicky while she is at it.

Being black, Fran looks good in just about any color. We are trying to stay away from blue, but otherwise, the rainbow is your limit.
