  1. Hi,

I just tried to send you a PM and it gave me a message that you cannot receive them. I am soo sorry you and Bailey are travelling this horrible journey, I noticed that Aerosmom told you to PM me, my dog Sara was diagnosed w/GME a year ago, she is living proof that miracles do happen, she had several areas of her brain, cerebellum and spinal loaded w/imflammation, Cytarbine, a chemo drug saved her, the prednisone was not working alone. I am saying many prayers for her and you. Plase feel free to PM me or email to robertaac@comcast.net

    Roberta

For nausea, she was on carafate and pepcid

  2. Hi,

Just wanted to add my prayers for Bruce and my experience w/GME. Last year in March, my Sara was diagnosed w/GME, she came close to dying from it, she was diagnosed at Mass Vet Referral Hospital by the neurologist(Dr Silver) who did a spinal and MRI on her the same day I brought her in. She had multifocal GME, several areas of the brain had inflammation as well as her spinal column. She was treated aggressively w/prednisone, antibiotics, phenabarbitol, she had seizures from the inflammation, she could not walk, had severe truncal sway, pepcid for her stomach. After 4 days on these meds, she got worse, and the doctor pushed a chemo drug, CYTARABINE, through her IV. This drug saved her life, the prednisone alone could not kill the high white count she had. She was able to come home 2 days later and walked out of that hospital, it was truely amazing, a miraculous recovery. She was put on an aggressive treatment pan that included chemo shots, pred., phenabarb, pepcid and it was for 10 months, originally it was for a year, she was tapered off all of it in December. She walks, runs , plays and has been doing great. I wanted to offer her story for hope, that Bruce can put his horrible disease in remission. Sara was almost 6 when she got sick, she will be 7 on June 30. Please feel free to PM me if you need to talk about this, GME is not common in Greys, there are a few of us on GT who have experienced it.

  3. i got an update and she seems to be doing okay... this is the note from Mom.

Poptart is doing better. The swelling is nearly gone. She keeps getting into her bandage and doing more damage. She gets very anxious in the early AM The T-shirt worked and I tried to leave 2 toes out for her to have more balance, then she chewed off that area and did some new damage on her toes. So I wrapped the whole foot. The 3rd night of t-shirt she chewed it off. It looked like swiss cheese. We caught her before any damage was done. I hate to leave the bite collar on all night while she is in the crate, but I don't know what else to do. She is still losing fur/skin, but the amount is minimal during the dressings. I took pictures but forgot where I put the camera. Once I find it I will download. The extent is overwhelming, but I know it will heal, eventually.

Sending healing thoughts for Poptart and for her mom, this must be so traumatic.

  4. OMG, I am soo happy to hear that it is a stroke and not GME, I read your beginning thread and got a knot in my stomach, my Sara has just gone through 10 months of chemo and prednisone for GME, the symptoms are so similar it is scary, she had an MRI, 2 spinals and almost a year of intense meds, I never gave up, it cost well over 7k total by the time we were through, she is worth every penny and then some for the love she gives in return. Welcome to GT and hope Jasmine recovers quickly!

  5. Congrats on the new baby, he is gorgeous, poor Spartacus has to share his mommy, I have a male that I adoped 1st, looks just like Spartacus and he has that same look many times when I am loving Sara, my girl. Have fun w/the 2, they will learn to like each other!!!

  6. Good Morning Everyone!

Hello from New York. I am so excited to have joined GT and would like to introduce my grey, Ladd, and myself. Ladd (M's Lively Ladd) is a goofy three and a half year old brindle boy who raced in MA. He was a very good racer and was retired last July. I'm so happy to have a frequented forum where I can let out my inner grey geek and hang out with you all.

I've been wanting to adopt a grey for 8 years and have finally found myself out of grad school poverty and in a place where I could make it all happen. If anyone out there is in the Queens/Flushing/Forest Hills area and would like to meet up at Flushing Meadows we'd be happy to come and play. ;) Once the weather gets better we'd even love a play day in Central Park. Also, if your grey's racing name started with "M's" something or "Marion's" something, it's a good chance our greys are related.

I'd also like to give a shout out to the Greyhound Rescue and Rehabilitation org in Westchester, New York. They are a bunch of wonderful, caring and competent greyhound heroes.

    Nice to meet you all,

    Kristyn and Ladd

Welcome from New Hampshire, I have a grey who may be related, his racing name was M's Mad Max, he raced in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire and he retired in 2004. Congratulations on the beginning of being owned by a greyhound!!!! :colgate

  7. So glad to hear that your baby is feeling a little bit better. Please keep us posted on his progress.

Rascal is much better today, he is eating, drinking and chasing my other cat around the house, he wants to go out but mean mama won't let him, the antibiotics are working ! Thanks again for support and prayers! :

  8. Any updates on your little baby? Prayers that it's something not serious.

Just got back from the vets, he has a high temp, they are doing blood work but they think that it has all the signs of an abcess brewing somewhere, my husband is traveling this week, just called him and he informed me that Rascal was fighting with another cat a few days ago, can't see a puncture wound but my other kitty had similar symptoms and it was an abcess from a puncture wound. They hydrated him and sent me home w/antibiotics, he is sleeping again after giving him his meds and he ate a tiny bit, that is an improvement. I am waiting for results of blood work but I believe he will be o.k, the antibiotics should take affect after a few more doses. Thanks for the prayers and support it really helps!

  9.

Just when I thought that maybe I would not have to be at the vet this month after having spent from March 07 - January 08 with my Sara getting treatments for her brain disease, now I have a sick kittie. Sara is great now but Rascal, my 8 month old kitten is not eating/drinking and was vomiting last night. I am praying that he is going to be o.k, his vet appt. is at 12:45, he has been sleeping on/off since last evening, I have moved him a few times, he wants to sleep on the doggie beds, Max (my male grey)barked at him this A.M., he knows something is wrong, he barked when Sara had seizures last year, please keep him in your prayers. He slept w/Sara last week, on her pillow, it was sooo cute, he is a grey wanna be.

  10. The only drugs that Carrier is on at the moment is a new drug called Cerenia for his nausea. In the past we have had him on the Metoclopramide for nausea and Metronidazole for diarrhea. Dr Couto wanted to try him on the Cerenia to replace the Metoclopramide because Carrier still wasn't eating, so he thought maybe changing the anti-nausea drug would help. Carrier had his first Cerenia this morning. He hasn't eaten anything since yesterday at 4pm.... which was can of Nature's Variety Instinct Canned Rabbit Food. He didn't want his breakfast yesterday before I had to drop him off. They offered him some food while he was there - but didn't want any.

He has been on Pepcid and also Pepto for the diarrhea - I found that worked better for him than the Metronidazole.

He has a fairly normal poop this morning, but doesn't want anything that we have in the house.

Thanks for the other suggestion on food. I will check them out. Off to the store.

I feel your pain w/this issue, my Sara has had chemo for 10 months now, different disease (GME encephalitis meningitis of brain) but still same problems, runny poop, she was om Pepcid, Prednsione, metronidizole, antibiotics at the beginning and Phenabarbitol and carifate, on top of Cytarabine(chemo). I have always fed bolied chicken or hambuger and rice mixed w/their California Natural Lamb and Rice kibble, just added canned science diet, she loves to eat everything but she has been a liquid poop dog throughout her disease and before, my vet tells me that she may have IBS like humans but she has been through so much medication he doesn't want to put her through the test to find out, she only poops 2 times a day so if frequency gets more I use the metronidizole. Her last treatment is next week, hoping poop problem resolves. Carrier will be in my prayers, you are doing so much for him w/ the food, he is bound to like someting!!

  11. Winslow is sending Brody a coat :)

Thanks Winslow! A cold front blew in last night and the boy is chilly!

Diane - I got the transfer factors and Brody likes it! Thank you so much!

Sorry I haven't updated for a couple of days. My day job is cutting into my greyhound time! :D Baby Brody is doing really well. I took him to the vet last night to have his nails trimmed and let Dr. S check him out. The great news is that he has gained 6 lbs!!! :confetti

The antibiotics are really kicking in and our boy is no longer green and crusty. There are still a few scabby places, but it's so much better than when we got him. I'll be giving him another bath tonight and hopefully more of the icky stuff will wash off.

Carla - thank you so much for helping out GALT. I don't even want to think about how huge Wizard's vet bill is going to be. He had to have another surgery yesterday to remove a blood clot from the amputation site so I will hopefully be picking him up tomorrow. He hasn't been eating so I'm sure he will need to gain a few pounds in addition to healing up.

I did get Cabot - the other broken leg boy - settled in a foster home on Tuesday. He is doing pretty good and his surgery went well.

I'll try to get some updated pics in the next few days.

Take care and hug your hounds!

    Kelly

Brody is in my thoughts and prayers and I am soo glad that he is doing better and skin is healing, it takes a special person to do what you are doing! I believe in angels on earth and you are certainly here for the cause of these grey babies! Thank you for all that you do for them.
