Tomorrow is our nine month post diagnosis chest rads. Send jingles.

She has a lump that showed up on her back between her shoulder blades and we sent it off to pathology, it’s just a fatty lipoma.

Update? Hope you got good news!! 🤞🏻

Jen, I did hear back from Susie Collins who said that she and Brian (Greyhound Health Initiative hadn't talked with him in a while. She suggested reaching out to Tina Kelly on FB if you have trouble reaching him again.

Thanks! He's been totally communicative today, it was just a typo in his email address. Records have been sent and hopefully he can help. :goodluck  Appreciate you reaching out!

  3. I couldn't find a thread on here about Feather. She's part of the Mutts Gone Nuts team and holds the world record for highest dog jump at 6'2"!!

I met her today, though I had no idea she was a superstar, I just wanted to cuddle a greyhound. And she was a TOTAL sweetheart!

Photo and link to her jump here:

Thanks all — have done Amantadine for about a week but no clear improvement. Oncologist said we can use/add in codeine soon, which I know will really knock him out.

The poor thing has barely eaten the last couple of days and just wants to sleep. The progression of this disease has really shaken us, but going to try and keep him comfy.

I know how difficult this is having faced this with all 3 of my greyhounds so I say this with the utmost compassion - excessive sleeping is often a way for dogs to avoid pain. Only you know your dog and your comfort level best, but I would consider that between your observations of his comfort level, the sleeping, and the lack of eating, his pain is no longer well managed.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Osteo is a horrible disease.

  5. Glad to hear the medication is helping!

For future training once the meds have fully kicked in I recommend an SA Pro certified trainer:

    https://www.subthresholdtraining.com/find-a-trainer/

SA training can all be done virtually so if there isn't someone close to you, a close friend and former coworker is certified and has a virtual training package:

    https://www.behaviorunited.com/

I strongly recommend working with her or someone else with that certification. I'm a professional trainer and behavior counselor and I worked with her with my own dog when her SA returned after we had to let my greyhound go and found it incredibly helpful. Some of the traditional training methods for SA aren't quite up to date with current research, but this program is and frankly, the emotional support you'll get from having a knowledgeable coach can be huge since SA is so difficult to deal with.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Has anyone changed to a lower carb food after diagnosis? We are in the process to changing Tessie to Halo Elevate Lamb. Curious what others have done. She’s getting CBD oil and turkey tail mushroom powder as well.

There’s another product called I’m-Yunity that’s supposed to be good, but I’m unsure if I should add anything else. The vet said I could go ahead and add, it was the one she recommended if I’d like. Healthy Paws hasn’t been very helpful in telling me if they cover certain items in the past, either.

My experience is they don't cover supplements, or anything related to behavior (they don't cover Skye's Reconcile for instance even though it's Rx). You could go deep down the rabbit hole of cancer supplements but I think the mushroom and immunity supplements are a good choice. Curious why the CBD?

  7. I can't believe there's no thread yet. Who's going?

I'll be there Thursday-Monday, staying at Seneca Lodge as usual. This will be my first year with no dogs since I don't have greyhounds anymore and Skye would not enjoy it. I'm definitely having some feelings about it, but still looking forward to the trip.

She’s eating today! Hurray. Still a big, dramatic event with lots of screaming to get her to stand up, despite the fact that she can actually do that on her own. She has been drinking plenty when it’s offered too. Seems like we are figuring this out, even if it’s not easy.

Have been checking for an update here and in the ABT all day. Yay for progress!

  9. One of the furcated ones eventually was, but the other wasn't. She lost other teeth, a lot of small little ones in the front and a couple of other random ones (she had bad teeth), but we never had to take them all out. She was 12 when I lost her to osteo.

FYI, we only started using the little brush after she had her first dental. If your pup has diseased gums, brushing likely doesn't feel good.

  10. Violet had furcations in two of her upper molars and they weren't in and of themselves a problem. We used a tiny dental brush to keep them clean because they will easily trap gunk. I don't know what those brushes were called or how to describe them. More like a toothpick with a cylindrical narrow brush on the end that would actually insert into the furcation and move back and forth gently.

They could run the C6 from the already drawn blood sample (Idexx).  I wouldn’t start the doxy until you have results.  The basic understanding with C6 results is any result over 30 you start treatment, under 30 you recheck in 6 months.  Confusing to me why start an antibiotic without understanding why.

I guess because she's presented with Lyme symptoms? I was able to get a cancellation appt with the vet I prefer for this evening, which is frankly a freaking miracle so thankfully I can have a better conversation about it before we do anything. I will definitely look into this and bring it up with her.

Is chronic Lyme not considered a thing in dogs anymore?

  12. No, the visit was just a blood draw so I could get her heartworm meds before I go out of town so she's only had the snap test. Our appt isn't scheduled until next week (they have nothing sooner like everywhere else), but I'm supposed to drop off urine and pick up Doxy today.

  13. Skye's (mixed breed) snap test came up positive for Lyme antibodies. I'm not up on the latest research on Lyme in dogs. Can anyone point me toward current information, or share what they know?

We're going to do a course of doxy and run her urine to check for kidney issues. I'm out of town this coming weekend, but we have an appt for the following week to discuss further and possibly do blood work, but I'll start the doxy and drop off the urine in the meantime.

I'm basically concerned about chronic infection. I know antibodies only mean she was exposed, but she had a weird bout of lameness at the beginning of the year. It was 2 months before we could get into the ortho, at which point she seemed better. He found nothing on exam and her x-rays we're pristine so I figured it was a muscle thing that had healed. But I'm now suspicious that she had an infection. I scheduled the upcoming visit because she's been a little "off" again lately. Seems like she has some discomfort in a back leg and pants really easily (pain? something else?). I may be totally off base, but if she did have an infection, is a single course of doxy considered sufficient these days?

  14. Did you find help? I'm only seeing this now, but what you really need is a veterinary behaviorist. If you let me know where you live, I can get you some recs, though if you're vet is willing to work with the VB on prescribing meds you might be better off with a remote consult so she doesn't have to leave the house. There are some really good VBs out there who do remote consults these days. My mailbox here is full so feel free to reach out to me at jen@playandtraindogs.com.

Galliprant is also supposed to have fewer gastro side effects, though I'm not sure if tha't the case in "real world" use.

I've never heard anything to the contrary from the vets we've discussed it with including orthos and neuros). Both Violet and Skye have take it without issue, fwiw.

  16. I'm sure it's coincidental, but the timing of this seems strange. I have ana acquaintance whose dog has been hospitalized with a mystery illness that included a fever. She was finally diagnosed with a type of pneumonia, but that doesn't seem to be her only issue. Doesn't sound like her symptoms are quite the same either, but it makes me go huh.

Anyway, I'm really glad your boy is doing so much better. Hope he's 100% very soon!
