  1. When talking to the VPI agent last week she mentioned she didn't know how much longer they would offer the cancer rider. They loose money on it, so there has been discussion about no longer offering that (the cancer rider is the reason I'm using VPI over the others) They would not ever drop the cancer coverage if you bought it now, it's $27/year for the puppy, for the life of the dog, vs. over $100 if you wait until they are 9+ to get the cancer rider. I'm as torn as ever! My thoughts exactly! If I'm going to get it for Fenway, I'll get it before he gets here (no pre-existing conditions). It's such a gamble....the longer I have my dogs and the older they get, I hope to have more disposable income so I don't have to worry. Aaarrrggg!
  2. Really? Why not? More details would be helpful for those of us on the fence!
  3. When I get insurance, likely tomorrow, I'm going with VPI. For Grace (4 years old) and puppy Fenway (4 months old) I was quoted $45/month for the superior plan with the cancer rider, but does not include preventive care. I have been torn because I don't have UNLIMITED disposable income, that's one or two less nights out on weekends or a few less lattes. I'll let you know in 3-4 years if it's worth it! I am about 95% sure I'm getting it, I've been dragging my feet long enough!
  4. Help me decide! I don't know if I should get insurance or not. I can be really stingy (or thrifty, depending on how you look at it!) and I hate "throwing money away". I feel like purchasing pet insurance for my greyhounds would be worth the peace of mind it provides in case one was to get really hurt or really sick. My parents think I should put money in a savings account instead (very hard for me, I'd tend to spend it on collars and coats instead!) Just wanted to get everyone's opinion.....I fear the worst and would like to be prepared, but not "ripped off". Thanks for sharing your experiences!
  5. Beautiful dogs! Welcome to GT. Photos are required round here!
  6. Run free, sweet girl. All who you have touched along the way are truely blessed. Deanna, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
  7. I'm so sorry to hear of this, she is and always will be a beautiful hound!
  8. I wanted a hound that came right from a kennel so that I could be the one to teach "her" everything. The group I chose to go with (there are three in my immediate area) had more hounds available and let me choose one. At least that's what I thought I was doing, when in fact Grace picked me! It's been very fun, I've had Grace for about 9 months now. I have #2 on the way in three weeks, so do be sure you can eventually accommodate many more hounds in the future! It truely is impossible to have just one!
  9. What a beautiful tribute for a greyt friend
  10. I see how your story changes. . . .wasn't it just yesterday you wanted my swamp thing?? In the wet season Mazie gets bathed at least once a week. Most of the time, twice a week. She loves bathes now though. She drinks the water out of the shower head and gets a greenie afterwards. I'm beginning to think she does it to get all the good rub down loving and treats. Truman, only when we go to the dog park with squeaky clean Grace Yeah my story changes, defense mechanism because secretly I do really want her to come live with me! She is a riot! So I guess this goes to prove that there is no such thing as too many baths, just as long as the pups skin is healthy and not too dry they are in good shape. I know you also feed that awesome salmon oil as well, which only helps their skin even more...
  11. I voted "Only when they need it" but unfortunatley that is more than I would like. Grace is friends with Mazie, and Mazie likes the mud. As much as Grace tries to avoid it, the temptation of chasing Mazie is just too great. I'm just glad Mazie doesn't live with me!
  12. Yeah that would be nice in theory, but when your dog keeps getting up it would be more dangerous to hold them down and try clipping. Grace won't lie down for nail clipping, so I put her muzzle on her for safety in case I do quick her (never have) and place her standing parallel to the foot of my bed (works with a wall too). This way she has something to lean into, an escape if she needs it, and is comfortable there. I clip one foot at a time and then praise/treat but ONLY if she was good. If she was not good I don't praise or treat at all, but remove the muzzle and go at it later. I occasionally get the GSOD if I get close to the quick, that's usually when I'll go back at it later. Drama!
  13. Aw shucks, you made me tear up! I'm so sorry for the loss of your Girlie....run swift and pain free!
  14. Godspeed sweet boy, you will be missed!
  15. Tear...a great tribute to a great friend. I just had to give Grace a little hug just to remind her now much I care for her....
  16. Huggy Bear....you are prescious! It looks like you had a lot of friends and I know you meant a lot to many people. Run fast and free, handsome!
  17. Just found out today that Grace has hookworms. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that we can get rid of them quickly....
