  1. wednesday we got rivie's biopsy results back - it's osteo. her tumor is on her rib, firmly attached. we drove to oklahoma city yesterday and saw a wonderful vet surgeon for consult, but surgery is not an option this time. we will continue to do what we have always done -- just love her. all advise, thoughts, prayers appreciated - my heart hurts.

I am so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you. The rib was were Beacher's tumor was. It grew fast so be prepared. Hawk's was in his shoulder and I believe it was easier and less painful on the rib. We got a good 7 months with Beach.

i would be so very interested in any info/help you can provide me!! i can find almost nothing on the web re:osteo on the ribcage. and yes, i am already astonished at the rate of growth - when i found the lump on june 19 (2 days after raibies vacine, vet checkup that was great, and awesome bloodwork -- see my earlier thread on possible rabies shot reaction!) the lump was "pecan to walnut" sized. since vet (who is wonderful) had just seen 2 days prior he suggested watching it a week. then the biopsy and a weeks wait for the results -- and now the tumor is between golf & tennis ball sized. i would be thrilled for anything you can share with me about beachers osteo --thanks so much.

thank you for all of your loving posts - i feel the comfort of others for sure.

  2. Have you seen an oncologist? Osteosarcoma occurs most commonly in the long bones, while chondrosarcoma is more commonly located in the nose and the ribs. Chondrosarcoma, from what my oncologist told me, is less aggressive and does not metastasize as easily. Generally, as a result, if you can remove the primary tumor, you may have several years left with your dog. I know you said surgery is not an option and I may be way off base, but just because of where it's located, I wanted to mention this.

You may also want to look into artemisinin - there is good evidence that it slows the growth of or in some cases shrinks (or gets rid of) tumors. You can start with the most conservative approach possible, which is what Dr. Couto recommends - 100 mg Artemisinin daily at bedtime, but there are more detailed protocols including use of artemisinin derivatives (artemether and artesenuate) and curcumin. Feel free to PM me for more info or check out the artemisinin_and_cancer yahoo group.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. :grouphug

ETA: Sorry, I'm an idiot, I see now that you did a biopsy, which probably differentiates b/w osteo and chondrosarcoma. :(

yes, she had a biopsy - and yes it is osteosarcoma and yes the tumor is located on the rib -- and yes i have already ordered the artemisinin (but the biopsy results were just back on wednesday, so it has not even had time to arrive yet) - we will start it as soon as it is delivered.

  3. wednesday we got rivie's biopsy results back - it's osteo. her tumor is on her rib, firmly attached. we drove to oklahoma city yesterday and saw a wonderful vet surgeon for consult, but surgery is not an option this time. we will continue to do what we have always done -- just love her. all advise, thoughts, prayers appreciated - my heart hurts.

  4. rivie had her rabies vaccine on 6/17 (thursday) - and the vet gave her a good look over then because of her age (dob 11/6/98). on saturday a.m. the 18th i noticed a walnut to lemon sized knot on her side about 2" back from her "armpit" and down towards her tummy. of course i phoned the vet right away, but thought it was probably a reaction to the vaccine, as we would have seen this knot, and i think he would have felt it in the exam of her. he confirmed that it was his belief it was a reaction and to watch it and if it wasn't down in size in a week to phone him back. well - 6/25 i thought it was still about the same size - maybe a little smaller, but not much....i phoned to ask if i could just run her by to ease my mind - the only part that troubled me was the location - more towards her tummy and on a rib - i thought this a very strange location for them to give the rabies shot (if indeed it was at the injection site). i was, i admit, miffed because they told me he was REALLY busy and it was not convenient, (come on -- we have been GREAT clients for a really long time) but went to check with him when i insisted. they came back on the phone and told me it would take at least a month to go down and were just pretty short with me (ERRRR). i thought i should google "rabies shot reactions" to make sure this was OK info and now am a bit scared -- anybody else have any experience/info/advice for me??? thanks in advance!!! teri

UPDATE 7/2 -- thank you so much for all your great input! yesterday i was still just a bit uneasy with the situation. i went to the vets office and just asked to speak with the tech - i explained the whole story and showed him on a dog where the lump was.....he said go get her and let the dr take a look right away. dr was so nice and appologetic - said it was not at all what he was thinking and took an x-ray....she will have biopsy on wednesday - PRAYERS APPRECIATED!!! thanks in advance - teri

  5. Sounds similar to what Clark had (although it had nothing to do with processing food). He was diagnosed with immune mediated punctate keratitis. The vet used a camera and took a picture of his eye through the scope, Clark's eye looked like a field of stars, so many pin point spots :eek . Long road to recovery, but he is fine now. If you want I still have the report from the opthomologist I can send you a copy.

He was treated with Cyclosporine 0.2% 3.5Gm Ophth Ointment.

Hope your baby is feeling better. :dogcookie

i would LOVE a copy of that!! would you like for me to pm you e-mail addy or street addy? thank you so much !!

  6. no - they said it wasn't panus. said he had an auto-immune disease causing him to not process food well - thus causing the calcium and cholesterol spots on the eye - they did a thyroid test at the opthomologists office and said they would be in contact with my vet - we go back to specialist in a month - got tacrolmus ointment for his eyes twice a day.

  7. when we got win a couple of years ago, he had some pin sized spots on his eye - since he had a broken leg at the track, the vet thought they were probably related to track dirt. recently the spots on the left eye got much bigger - our vet ran lab work to check calcium level & other assorted tests and made us an appt with the doggie opthomologist. our appt was yesterday - they ran thyroid tests there and said he 1. had old scar damage from some sort of parasite and 2. current spots were both cholesterol and calcium spots and were probably due to an auto-immune disease of some sort - we are to check on the thryoid test results - see opthomologist again in a month and they will confer with our regular vet -- any advise/help/experience with this sort of thing??? thanks in advance for any help!
