Petsmart/petco Training?

We recently adopted a 2.5 year old guy. He was super well behaved and we really wanted to work on basic commands and building confidence. We went to Petco for adult level 1 training. The trainer hadn't worked with greys before but she did her own research on the breed when we enrolled him so that by the first week of class she knew how sensitive they are to correction, etc. She was really great and taught us to use positive reinforcement and behavior shaping. We started class and he didn't know any commands, and with once weekly classes for 6 weeks, he now does sit, stay, down, watch me, wait, touch, and paw. We can't recommend HER enough. Not all Petco trainers are equal - we actually drive to the Petco 1/2 hour away for the class because the Petco down the street didn't seem as receptive to learning about how greys are different than other breeds and we just didn't get a good feeling with them. We live in an area that only has a couple professional trainers within an hours drive, and they use shock collars and prong collars in their work which we just aren't comfortable with for our laid back, people-pleasing guy. He built so much confidence during the class, too, which is great!

Wait until you find a trainer both you and your dog feel comfortable with. It's good to remember that Petco can be hit or miss, not every trainer is equal, and follow your gut - if your not comfortable with what the trainer is recommending, try somewhere else.

Good luck!
