krissn333
I just gave Clarice her second dose of Simplicef about an hour ago. She has a bladder infection and some vaginal irritation. Just a bit ago, she was licking at her belly and chest, and scratching at her neck. I'm not sure that I have ever seen her scratch her neck with her hind leg like that so much, ever. I've started to wonder if she's having a reaction to the meds. Currently she's laying down and is asleep on the couch. Of course I'm hyper-aware of how she's breathing and I keep watching her. I think she's fine, and I'll call our vet tomorrow to see if we should continue it, but, I'm just wondering if anyone else has a hound that has reacted in a similar way. None of what had happened is listed specifically in the list of side effects, but, I've been around long enough to know what a mild reaction looks like(and being allergic to Augmentin myself, I know how that feels and it sucks). I may give her some benedryl if she starts up with the scratching again... krissn333
Little update: she's asleep, no longer pink and itchy. Seemed annoyed I was checking her over while she was snoozing Still curious to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience with Simplicef though... tbhounds
Sounds like a possible reaction. Has she ever taken cefazolin - cephalexin before? They are in the same family of drugs. Reaction to them?
krissn333
She's taken cephalexin several times before with no problems at all. However, I've taken related antibiotics without issue, but Augmentin caused a reaction for me, so, I assume it's possible to be more sensitive to one over another? tbhounds
Augmentin is a combo of abs so that's a tough one to compare too. Simplifec and cephalexin are both in the cephalosporin family--I suppose it's possible to have a reaction (anything is possible when it comes to allergies-could even be allergic to the orange dye on the simplifec) to one and not another but, I think that's a stretch. krissn333
She seemed fine shortly after I posted last night. We decided to give it to her again tonight and monitor closely to see if she does it again. krissn333
No problems last night...a weird coincidence I suppose.
