How Long Before Testing For Worms?

So I take the dogs for their morning walk today-- I'm not usually the morning person

 

 

They both seemed interested in something under a tree/shrub, and while I didn't like them being tangled and maybe get their eyes scratched or something, I dind't think much of it.

 

 

Well, Haka comes up all NOM NOM and some FUR sticking out of his mouth!

 

I didn't see the start of the eating, so I only was able to get his mouth open and remove some longish, grey fur.

 

 

 

I'm *hoping* that it was just fur, maybe rabbit poop or something... but what I *think* is that maybe he ate a dead mouse?

 

 

 

So now, I'm *assuming* that he'll get worms... b/c really, what's the likelihood that this little event won't cause a trip to the vet (and before you say, no, it's a minor chance... my dogs manage to get some sort of worms at least 1x a year, often asymptomatically, and I haven't a clue where they pick it up.... sigh.)

 

 

So--- assuming I'm going to need to at the very least do a stool sample for him-- how long do I wait. I think it's 3 weeks usually?

 

Obviously, sooner if he starts exhibiting symptoms of any weird sort (vomiting, soft stools, going in the house...).

 

 

 

Thoughts? I'm so annoyed (he doesn't usually eat things on the walk) and dissappointed that I let this happen (I usually am more awake when I walk them, since my walk is the 4pm one).

I see you're in Mississauga. Contact Karen at Camp Greyhound ("kjw" on this board, I believe) and get some DE (diatomaceous earth). You can start your pup on that right away and it should take care of the potential problem. I did the DE thing last year when Summer ate a rabbit in the back yard.

You can buy DE lots of places. My husband works in a hardware store and they sell it to gardeners and other folks who own pets. I'm not trying to take business away from Karen, just if you need something immediately, I'd check your area first. If someone says it's a different quality, our vet buys it from dh and he has a small horse farm with dogs, cats etc.

 

...just something to think about...
