Water-Holic/big Drinkers Let's Consilidate

there are a couple of people posting about their dog's excessive drinking. i have been contributing to their blogs since i am presently the owner of one of them. i thought since some owners(including me) are testing their dog's urine and blood let's combine comments and findings and symptoms on this topic.

 

from what i have gathered so far tests (incuding felix's) have been inconclusive. so, if you wish let's write down symptoms,proceedures and findings and hopefully some thing gathered might just help one and another.

 

i have used the same vet for a long time(34 years), he is an excellent diagnositician and has 40+ years of experience, good common sense, doesn't over medicate or test unless his gut and experience tells him somthing needs a specialist.

 

dog: male, 5yrs, 77.8#s, excellent health,glowing coat, excellent muscle tone,temp/heart/ lymph nodes- normal, "picture of health" meds: interceptor- monthly,frontline plus seasonally, food- nurtro lamb/rice/large breed(4c daily), salmon oil. felix has always been a heavy drinker, especially after exercising.part of an opps litter, he has resided here since 7 weeks. neutered at 9.5months. aside from dings and dents the only problem he has had is w/ giardia as a young puppy.

 

problem started: in september,

symptoms: heavy drinking, excessive urination(standing for 5+ min urinating), urinary accidents:crate, overnight,if left for more than 5 hrs(this dog normally had a cast iron bladder in the past), urinary incontience- peed on me in his sleep 3xs, peed/small puddles in sleep on bed 2xs

 

procedure: eliminated all dog treats(costco dental chews, thin rawhide), this all started after trying costco nature's domaine, eliminated food,fed boiled rice for one week, went back to holistic select. one week of des,(10mg??)for incontience- it worked!! returned to normal urination patterns(he always stands/squats when peeing.

 

urine analysis#1 begining of oct: normal, good concentration

 

LATE NOVEMBER:76.1# weight, excessive drinking/urination problem stops, starts again! also upset digestive track,

back to vet, described problems which changes and increased flatugence, upset stomach, one week of tylan powder- excellent results, normal drinking, no gas, fed rice weaned over to Nutro lamb and rice/large breed. perfectly normal urine sample #2. normal urination patterns after treatment.

 

DECEMBER- pretty normal drinking habits, nothing too excessive except when he exercises(soccer,tennis, frisbee catching) duration on long (3+mile walks) normal.good stools, no intenstinal upsets, excellent appetitie, playful.

 

JANUARY- normal until JAN 13th- no changes in diet, exercise, duration/stamina still good

symptoms: excessive,long urination and then tanking up w/ water. 2-3 hrs needing to urinate and refill.i must have refilled the 3 qt bowl(3/4 of the way 6xs daily over the weekend) it's the quanity if water consumed and need to refill after peeing that's changed.

vet visit: JAN 16- bloodwork and urine normal, back to normal weight of nearly 78#.

we started monitoring water intake(including water added to food)- yesterday- 4 3/4quarts(normal for his weight calculated should be a little under 3 qts)

today we are recording his water intake and output. vet was disturbed that blood work was perfect, thinking diabetes incepidus(sp? water diabetes, concerened about his pitutary gland's function)

little exercise yesterday due to rain, his drinking has resumed to his normal higher volume but not outrageous tanking up.

we are gathering info/data so my vet can either send him to a specialist or he can figure out what is going on.

 

so, what's your history & findings w/ your outrageous drinkers? experienced gt hound owners who have gone thru similar episodes, input please!

Hmm, I notice giardia came up in your post.

 

Ryder was diagnosed with it too when we got him, and he's an aquaholic too. I will put together something more extensive and post when I have some time tonight.
