Septic Joint

Hi GT Friends,

My sweet boy Augie's soft tissue injury has now been rediagnosed as a septic joint. I don't recall seeing a puncture wound but the worsening of his back lower leg fits better with that. When I worked in the ER, we came across septic knee joints and I assisted on tapping them. When the vet described the fluid I knew where it was going. As y'all know, I had surgery so my boy has been boarding at our favorite rescue group. They took him to their vet who is a grey specialist and i am so thankful they took him there. We had already dropped several hundred bucks on the ER vet. Finally getting a correct diagnosis and the vet taking a culture to test out the infection, is worth every penny (almost $500). My poor bank account is down $1100 just in vet bills this month.

Would anyone be willing to share their experience and how follow up care went. Augie's responding to the antibiotics but I just wanted to see if anyone had long terms problems with the joint. My reseach said it can lead to arthritis early in the joint. I just want to keep my boy and a healthy path!

Thanks,

ava and augie's mum

Any inflammation within the joint can cause damage to the cartilage, especially if it continues for prolonged periods. So it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and start him on a good joint supplement to try to prevent any problems. When my girl Willow developed inflammation in all her joints, suspected to be secondary to a systemic infection, I used both a good oral glucosamine supplement as well as a course of injectable Adequan.
