Need Rec For Oncologist In Ct Area

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend a great, greyhound-savvy oncologist in the Hartford CT area? Our ortho is in Northborough (2 hrs away) and works with a great oncologist in her area, but I'm trying to find an oncologist closer to us. If we can't find anyone who comes highly recommended, we'll go to the one in Mass, but I thought I'd try here first. It would make things much easier for Lucy and for us if we could find someone local.

Thanks.

Not in CT but just a short distance over into RI, in Warwick.

Dr Abrams

When I was in CT we used him for a few dogs that had eye issues and even an elderly horse.

If you watch the photos that flip through on the left you will see Dr. Abrams checking out a greyhound :D

Thanks - but it looks they are an ophthalmology practice? Do they treat cancer (of areas other than the eye)?

I don't know about CT but perhaps the animal oncology (and evet) practice that I go to could give you a local referral? As horrible as it is to go there on an emergency, they have always been tremendously kind and supportive (even the receptionist was calling taxis for me at one point).

No personal experience, but when we thought Sadie had leukemia I believe Ocean State Veterinary was where our vet was going to send us. They handle all the "big stuff" and the emergencies around here. They are in East Greenwich, RI. http://www.osvs.net/

Good luck and I hope Lucy is doing as well as can be expected.

I remember something about them helping a GH and it was someone here who posted it, but I can't remember what exactly it was.

Ocean State is just down the street from me and from what I have heard, they have quite a reputation

I did a search and saw it was "Fasave" who has several posts about a Dr. Huntley. It appears in posts about alternative treatments for Rizzo's cancer and other related posts. She may be able to give you her experience if you contact her. I do not know her.

:blush Oops sorry, totally misread your post :blush

My mom does use Ocean State for her foster dogs (Frenchies) and she has gone there with a few of her own hounds. Mix results on surgeries preformed there.

There are no local (i.e. less than 1 hour away) oncologists, I've been calling around. I guess I was hoping to find someone local who we could see immediately (like, today), to get some guidance on what to do/a prognosis based on all of the factors....just another opinion to help us make our decision, I guess. But we talked about it tonight and I think we are going to do the amp regardless of what an oncologist would say. Even if it's just for the sake of pain relief, I think it's the best choice for her.

We'll need an oncologist post-amp, though, so I'll look into these suggestions. Thanks everyone.

Just seeing this. Yes, Dr. Hunley at Ocean State Veterinary Clinic is awesome. The clinic itself gets mixed reviews but Dr. Hunley is great. I live in MA and have access to Tufts, Angell & Nevog. I went to see Dr. Hunley. Let me know if you have any questions.

Forgot to add, he is VERY grey savvy and follows Dr. Couto's work at OSU closely.

Send a pm to Jan at Fiverooooor's as she lives in Hamden, CT and may have a name or she can get one from her vet. Since she just lost Ladybug she has not been very active on GT. Normally she would have seen this and replied. Or you can send me a pm with your home email address and I will forward your message to her home email address.

Thank you - I may call Dr. Hunley, I like that he follows OSU's research. It's a bit of a drive for us, though, which I don't mind for consultations, but I don't know that I'd want to get the chemo administered there since it requires so many trips and I believe many vets like you to drop the dog off for half a day and come back to get them. I wonder if he'd be willing to manage her care but have our local vet administer the chemo (which they do). Our local vet could technically do it all without us seeing an oncologist, but it's not their primary focus and I think I'd prefer someone who is more knowledgeable. I suppose we could also have our local vet administer and use OSU for consultation on questions our vet can't answer - but they are so hard to get ahold of, I don't know that I'd be comfortable with that, either.

I'm not sure what type of chemo you are looking at but I traveled to RI from North of Boston. He allowed me to schedule and wait for my guy in the waiting area. In fact, he had his tech come get him, prep him for the procedure and bring him back to me until they were ready. My boy is super anxious so Dr. Hunley went out of his way to make sure we limited the stress as much as possible. Again, it might depend on the type of treatment.

Dr Hunley is just down the street from me, and if anyone here from out of the area needs to have their pup seen or treated by him, our door is always open for as long as needed.

Plenty of room here and comfort, and Ekko will promise to behave

Jess,

We never saw an oncologist for Charlie. We did have an orthopedic surgeon for the amputation and hospital stay but for chemo, our local vet administered it. We initially were planning to see the oncologist who was an hour away however after learning she didn't follow OSU guidelines and seemed too full of herself, we looked at other options. In the end, we got a local vet (who we had never met before) and he has been awesome! They do not normally have many pets get Chemo at their practice but he had done it before and it took approx. 1hr only each time. We were intimidated by the chemo process initially but in the end it is simple. They perform blood work ahead of time and if all looks good, then it's an IV drip that takes a little bit of time while you sit with your pup - yes, it's that simple.

Bottom line is, we were able to get all the answers from our local vet as we engaged him in our concerns, questions, etc. He did contact Dr. Coutu a couple times and received answers back.
