Previcox

Recommended Posts

Dylan was given Previcox 227mg on Monday for his anal gland abcess. I gave him 1 on Monday and 1 on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he vomited and wanted to drink and pee excessively. The last pill I gave was Tues. He still is obsessing over water and his pee is diluted. I took him for blood work yesterday and his BUN and Creatinine are "slightly" elevated. My vet said to give him Pedialyte to stay hydrated. I called Merial the drug company and told them what happened and she said this can be a "side effect". I asked her how long it will take to get out of his system and she said she couldn't answer that. All dogs are different..Anyone out there with any ideas how to get this out of his system quicker?? Sorry to ramble but I'm totally freaking out!!

Is he getting any other meds?

Might want to give 1 regular strength pepcid (10mg famotidine) twice a day, or ask your vet about some carafate/sucralfate for him. It sounds like the Previcox irritated his tummy; hopefully by today/tomorrow he'll be feeling much better.

The Baytril can irritate, too -- any antibiotic can. Not saying it is, but it can. Drinking a lot (and therefore peeing a lot) is a common response to tummy not feeling quite right. Since his kidney values were decent, that's what I would suspect. Soooooooo, even with just the Baytril I would add something for his tummy and see if it helps. Check the Baytril insert or ask your vet about timing the dosage -- Pepcid *usually* doesn't interact with other meds or cause absorption problems, but always wise to check the specific medication. One of those "won't hurt, might help" sorts of things :) .
