Carboplatin Experience

Does anyone have experience with the grey reaction to the chemo drug carboplatin? Our Vet says canine vomiting, diarrhea and low white blood cell count are all possible. She can’t find any documentation, discussion, research, etc. re: “typical” grey reaction.

 

Our decision: let the CA play out post amputation (already accomplished) or carboplatin treatment with possible miserable after effects.

I can't tell you specifically about Carboplatin in Greys. But what I can tell you is that we tend to see a lot less side affects from chemotherapy than are seen in humans. For most chemotherapeutics we don't use as high of a dose as they do in human med. The gastrointestinal issues are usually easily prevented by pretreating with meds to prevent it. We do see some issues with low white count. In my experience very few are low enough to prevent future treatment with chemotherapy, although some times it has to be dealayed. If the WBC count drops below a certain level, antibiotics should be given to prevent a secondary infection.

 

Our purpose for doing chemo in pets is to give them as much good quality life as we can. Therefore, we just don't tolerate the severe side effects like those seen in people. In people in most cases they are trying to blast the hell out of the cancer to rid the person of it. That requires higher doses and leads to more side effects.

Dylan was mainly just tried. He had little or no issues from either of his chemo drugs.

3 of my greys have been through amputation and chemo for osteo. 2 of the 3 had 4 rounds of carboplatin. The other one had an alternating protocol of carboplatin and doxorubicin. None had vomiting or diarrhea. One of the 3 was a little lethargic and had decreased appetite for a few days after carboplatin treatment. The other 2 showed no signs whatsoever. Carboplatin seems to have less gastric side effects than doxorubicin.
