Guest malandmo Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Hello. I was wondering if there is a way of making the quick retreat on toe nails so that they can eventually be trimmed way back. I have a dremel and have used it to shorten the nails, but it doesnt look like the quick is retreating so I cant make much progress on shortening the nails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Guest Energy11 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Just "tip" them once a week, (taking just the very ends off), and eventually, the quicks will grow back. Good Luck! Quote
Trudy Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 You'll need to dig out the dremmel frequently. Every other day or 2 days or so for a while. Quote
Guest FastDogsOwnMe Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Grind until you see a little pink. Sometimes the dog will yank his foot away at this point. That means you're tipping the quick. This'll make it recede. Use a nail file if you want to be more precise, and then file the nail a little every day. At least that's what I do. Your dogs nails should not touch the floor when he's standing. Quote
Guest FullMetalFrank Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I dremel every couple of days when I am trying to work the quick back; also, after you have shortened the nail as much as you can, go around and remove some of the surrounding "meat" (think like sharpening a pencil, with the quick as the lead) that helps it shrink back "quicker" (sorry, bad pun intended ) Quote
Batmom Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Every day or every other day, dremel down to the quick and bevel the nail edges a little so the center of the nail (where the quick is) is the part that hits the ground. If you do it every day, it'll just be a quick swipe. Every other day, couple quick swipes. It takes @ 3 weeks of this to see results. Once you see the end of the quick in the surface you're grinding, you can usually take another light swipe or two. The quick has a tough sheath covering it.
