Guest Hollys2hounds
Some of you may remember that I will be fostering or babysitting for an 11 year old grey, who's mom is recovering from illness. She was supposed to come over last night, but I got a call that the home Sally is currently in, has at least one dog with Kennel Cough. (there are 9 greys there) My guys have not had the Bortetella nasal or vaccine in 2 years. Sally's owner said that she can stay in the home where she is for another week. So right now, she is scheduled to come next Sunday evening. I called my vet this morning, and asked his opinion. Basically, he said it is a coin toss.... He said some dogs actually contract a mild case from the Nasal, and the vaccine takes a while to work. Sooooo, what is your opinion.... if Sally were scheduled to come into your home with your pack.... would you get your dogs vaccinated or have the nasal spray given? Sally does not actually have Kennel cough at the moment, but of course that could change too, and she may not get it, but she could be a carrier.... Help! What would you do? Batmom
I'd get my dogs vaccinated today. Over the years, had 1 dog (out of many) contract kennel cough from the nasal. Haven't had any contract it from the injectable. Guest hlpnhounds
Just some thoughts from a vet tech..... We recommend using the injectable first and then using the intra-nasal as a booster 2-3 weeks later and then once to twice a year after that. Depending on how often the dogs are exposed to other dogs, of course. Dogs that compete or show are vaccinated more often than the dogs that are just couch potatoes and rarely meet other dogs. The thing I was taught about the bordatella vaccine is that it builds immunity with exposure. That said, this is why many boarding/training facilities require a bordatella vaccine (either injectable or intra-nasal) to be administered WITHIN 2 weeks of being boarded or starting training. I have seen kennel cough left to brew too long and turn into pneumonia.
Guest Hollys2hounds
Am I correct that the injectable does not become effective for a week or two?
Batmom
Can't recall but your vet will know. Better not to wait, tho. kamsmom
Just a thought... Has Sally been vaccinated? If not than she needs it now too. She either needs it now or to get out of the home now. Guest Energy11
I would vaccinate, and just keep an eye on them. Bord is easy to treat. Good Luck!
SarahsBlackPack
You might want to wait about a week after the dog has stopped coughing to make sure they are ok. Guest Hollys2hounds
Just found out that Sally has been vaccinated. She is completely up to date on shots and Bortetella is not due til November 09.
KF_in_Georgia
Also consider the health of your guys: anyone with chronic problems that could be made worse by exposure? And do you need to take your guys around other dogs--M&Gs or the like, where having a sick dog on your own hands would be a big problem?
