Guest jamhuss
This is just killing me! Christoffe which was originally diagnosed with OS after a pathological break in his rear leg in Dec '07. He's had a great 19 months. About 2 months ago I noticed his amputated stump was looking larger so we went to the vet (same vet that diagnosed osteo) and after exam and xrays thought it was an infection. After antibiotics, he got better but 2 weeks after the meds it started to look the same. Vet referred us to a specialist and after a biopsy it was confirmed OS, again. Just wondering about any others experience the second time around. He's still in great spirits, eats and drinks well, lounges in the sun and chases the squirrels. Guest Energy11
No experience here, but, that IS soooo strange, especially after all this time! Lots of hope, love and prayers from here! I would DEFINITELY get in touch with Dr. Couto and the OSU people about this, we well. Maybe THEY have seen this.
Guest jamhuss
Thanks. I haven't been on this board in a long time and had to sign up again (same user name). I've got an email in to OSU. They were a tremendous help to me and Christoffe's vet the first time. The specialist he is seeing now is familiar with Dr. Cuoto and has met him several times as well. Guest MorganKonaAlex
I've had 3 with amputations from Osteosarcoma. One developed lung mets, but none have developed a local recurrence. I'm a little confused by the term "stump". Was the whole femur removed?
Guest jamhuss
The head of the femur is still in the socket with a little of the bone left (4 to 6 inches). He had a CT scan yesterday to determine the exact location of the cancer so we can arrive at a decision for treatment. Amazing thing is his lungs show no signs of metastisizing, from the CT, and have been clear on the 3 xrays since the initial diagnosis. HopeForHounds
I'm glad you are in touch with OSU. That would have been my advice. I only know of one dog that had a reccurence, although his was in another leg so it really limitted the treatment options. Bosha was 3 1/2 years post amp and chemo. He was an OSU patient. Saddly Bosha left us last month when his leg broke. You have my thoughts and prayers. Guest jamhuss
Was it the femur that had the original lesion? It's the same femur as the original.
Guest gottaluvgreysindy
My boy had a front leg amp due to osteo and kicked cancer's butt for over two years before he had a mass appear in his chest. Took him back to OSU where he had his amp and all treatment and they did a biopsy and thought for sure the chest mass would not be osteo but it was. They said it was odd to see osteo reoccur as a mass in the chest when his lungs were still looking clear. They could not operate to remove the mass since it was osteo. Prayers that treatment is in line with this location since his lungs are still clear. My boy lived a wonderful 27 months post diagnosis/amputation. Guest MorganKonaAlex
Was it the femur that had the original lesion? It's the same femur as the original. Just FYI - We've had 2 front leg amps and 1 rear leg. The front leg amp removes the whole leg including the shoulder blade. The rear leg removed the whole femur. MaryJane
From what you have said, it sounds like the osteo is limited to the leg so it sounds like they might just be able to take the remaining stump. It's good news that the x-rays are clear ... With my boy, the whole leg was removed and months later, masses showed up in his lungs and near his spine.
