Guest houndlover
Mirabella is a six year old Grey who has had relatively new, for canines, total knee replacement surgery through Greyhound Options Inc. Here is her story in the hopes of providing information to other groups who might face the same situation in the future. Mirabella had some tough breaks in her six short years. She was the only survivor of a kennel fire when she was a puppy but her worst break came in May of 2006 when she suffered a serious knee injury racing at the Raynham track. After two knee surgeries and three months of physical and hydrotherapy, she never quite regained good use of her back leg. She went to and came back from two adoptive homes during the past three years and when she returned this time, we were very concerned with the fact that she was not using the leg at all. An orthopedic surgeon who examined her diagnosed severe osteoarthritis and recommended amputation to relieve her pain. We asked about the possibility of a knee replacement (available to humans) and were referred to Dr. Melvyn Pond, a specialist in ground-breaking canine joint replacement in New Haven, CT. After examining Mirabella, he told us she was a good candidate for a total knee replacement that should provide her with full use of her leg again. We were very fortunate to find a very generous benefactor donated the entire cost of the surgery. Other donors provided enough funds to pay for her all-important post-op physical therapy. Mirabella had her knee replacement on May 13 and came home to recuperate two days later. As of this writing, she is doing very well and will start a few weeks of physical therapy this week to strengthen her leg that has atrophied from three years of disuse. Already it seems that Mirabella is more comfortable in her own skin without the constant pain from the arthritis. She is starting to toe touch and we are looking forward to the day when she can run on all four legs as she was born to do. We will provide updates as her journey to that day continues. Is there a forever home in the picture now, I hope? I'm not sure. She is not at all ready to be adopted and isn't even on the website yet. I have a feeling that a certain someone in our group might take her......but that's just a hunch. Edited June 3, 2009 by houndlover
