Robin1017 Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 Hi, Robin appears to have jammed his toe doing some of his zoomies. Though it's very minor, there is a lot of caked mud mixed with blood around the toenail, and it is up under the skin surrounding the toe. I worry about infection, because I can see how it might be a bit swollen, and I thought someone on here had suggested soaking something like that in epsom salts to clean it? I just wanted to check again before I did so. Does this sound like a good idea? He won't get sick when he licks it later? Thanks! Quote Cathy & Calvin (DOB 9/18/13). Then dissolve 1/4 cup epsom salts in about 2 cups warm water, and soak the foot for as long as he will tolerate. (ten minutes would be good). It helps to swirl the salt water around the boo boo also, to help the salt water circulate in and around the wound. You can then rinse with clean water to remove excess salt. scullysmum Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 I would soak it in boiled then cooled water with a big pinch of salt in it...epsom salts are useful for drawing out infection but it should not actually be infected yet...this is what I did when my girl had an open fracture of one of her toes lat year, I soaked it and got the mud and blood off while waiting for our vets to open and it didn't get infected.
