It first occurred last Monday, and has been opening up every 2 days or so. We have wrapped, and re-wrapped, and wrapped again, to no avail. He keeps hitting it on things that open it up, even through the wrap. It's a small wound that we just can't get to stay closed (a small hole At what point do we go to the vets? I am not sure what they would do except wrap it the way we have been doing. I have some antibiotics (cephalexin) left over from another vet trip that I have been slipping him. Thoughts? Advice?? ahicks51 Posted October 22, 2008 Share Posted October 22, 2008 The pipe insulation foam also works. The main problem is keeping it on! Some recommend wrapping the entire tail; that seems to work best for some. I've also used the spray-on stuff from 3M to stop capillary bleeding and oozing on the tail. It was the only way we got our Spencer to stop bleeding. It always looked like an FBI crime scene when he would start to bleed. Good Luck! We have been using rolled cotton (the stuff they stuff people with on ER) to pad the tail. Our boy just gets SO excited that he can even hit a blunt object and get it bleeding again through the pad. I think we need to try the curlers or the pipe insulation. I am a little weary of trying duct tape though... he is not happy with me bandaging his tail and even less excited when I try to get the bandage off. I think duct tape would send him over the edge :-) I did see a suggestion somewhere else to put the pipe insulation up the entire tail... maybe we'll try that and he can be a hot water heater for Halloween! ahicks51 Posted October 22, 2008 Share Posted October 22, 2008 I don't know about pipe insulation for the entire tail- I would think that padding the end, but using bandages running up as far as possible to keep it all in place might work. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't taping the tail to the leg also considered a valid technique? Nichole Posted October 22, 2008 Share Posted October 22, 2008 (edited) I've used the old fashion rollers - with the bristles taken out - and vet wrap it the whole way up. I leave the wound unwrapped to get air and apply liquid bandage - the spray kind. Also have used the end of the travel toohbrush container thing - it has a hole in the end to allow for air. Guest Greyt_dog_lover Posted October 22, 2008 Share Posted October 22, 2008 If you are apprehensive about using any tape, try the self-adhesive wrap. It comes in a variety of colors and simply use pressure to tape it to itself. If you are looking for something that definitely wont allow any further damage, try going to the hardware store and getting some pvc pipe. Of course size to your little one's tail, then cut a section about 1 inch longer than you need (that way the tail can still move and flex) and use the selft adhesive wrap to hold it on (I would also pack the inside with cotton to prevent possible additional cutting from the edges of the pvc pipe).
