Foster Dog Licking Herself Raw-- Help Please

When Shanti's tail started with that weird "scape like" spot, it then progressed. It smelled HORRIBLE! It had dead tissue and a nasty staph infection. Is it painful to touch? My friend brought me a blue cleaning solution they use at the vets. You dilute it down it does not sting. It made a world of difference on the smell.

I would wonder if there is an infection going on there. You started antibiotics. What did they give you?

The manuka honey is mentioned in Shanti's tail problems thread. It has a link to it. Amazing stuff from what I read.

Nikki had the same problem after her dental 2 years ago. A week later, we noticed what looked to be an abrasion. It quickly became large and deep. The vet said that some of the medicine during the anesthesia leaked into the surrounding tissue when the iv catheter was being removed. This caused the surrounding tissue to die and slough off. We had to take her to the vet for daily to twice weekly dressing changes with a special high-sugar dressing. When the dead tissue was gone, she needed the leg sutured back together. Dr Sheff said that this was only the second time in 20 years he has seen this happen. He also said that I would not be paying a penny for the treatment. It was his fault the medicine leaked and therefore his responsibility to treat it.

She's ok- they gave her cephalexin. I've got her in a taped muzzle with a tshirt on. She's given up on trying to get the muzzle off thankfully.

I put the steriod on the wound this morning and I'm leaving it open while she's in the house. The flesh looks black when it's out in the open and dried out but when it's been bandaged it's the same grey color as the rest of her skin. The vet said they didn't see any sign on an infection but I asked them to write me prescription for the antibiotic anyway. I figures it couldn't hurt to have it around.

Anyway, thanks for all the help for my questions
