Guest Greyhounds4ever
I just read this article and it terrified me. This is EXACTLY why I have switched all of my dogs to a raw diet. Please all of you, be aware of what you are feeding your animal friends and if ANYTHING seems out of the ordinary with it, DON'T FEED IT! This goes for all commercial dog food, not just NUTRO. Loosing even one pet because of this is one too many. Here is the link
beledi
I quit feeding Nutro about a year ago. Some of the Nutro food specialists in a local store have quit using the products for their own dogs, store shelves have been empty and my dogs did not seem as energetic and their coats were looking bad, and one dog had a different odor. I have switched to Bil-Jac and they seem to be doing greyt. I also use Avoderm and Pet Botanics, and Solid Gold Green Tripe. Quote "Then God sent the Greyhound to live among man and remember. Guest Stretchy
I also stopped feeding Nutro last year during all of the recalls. I usually feed them Solid Gold now though it is quite expensive.
Guest Greyhounds4ever
Solid Gold Green Tripe. I also quit feeding Nutro about a year ago. Since feeding my fur kids a raw diet I haven't looked back. I also like that Solid Gold canned green tripe and the dogs LOVE it! Sure is stinky though! DonnaBehr
One of my greys has a senstive stomach and I had been giving him Nutro Venison and Brown Rice with much success. I never had a problem with the food, nor did he, but all of a sudden you couldn't get the Nutro Venison or Herring for senstive stomachs. I was very happy to find NEW Nutro Venison and Brown Rice and the Herring and Brown Rice on the shelf again when I went to PetSmart yesterday. Food smells fine and dogs are fine. CaliforniaGreys
Did I miss something? I read the report about the 2 IG's. Very sad, but the owner had the Nutro checked and they found nothing in the food that caused the deaths. That's why I ask if I missed something. I've been feeding Natural Choice for many years with excellent results, but I'm not foolish enough to discount illness or death related to the food. But what I'm reading is saying it's not the Nutro. Guest Greyhounds4ever
NUTRO is saying it is not the Nutro. That's like asking a thief if he stole something or asking a cat if it ate the mouse. Get my drift? The article went on to say that the affected pet owners are getting independent labs to test the food to see if they can detect something the Nutro labs "missed". Guest mountain4greys
I've never found anything wrong with the Nutro, nor has anyone else in our group or others that have had problems. The reason they weren't on shelves is because of a distribution problem. Nothing has changed, I think people just have to blame something. Any hype seems to be coming from the same source. All 5 of mine will continue to eat Nutro, until someone can actually prove something. Edited June 26, 2008 by mountain4greys

I wouldn't pay attention to what Nutro said, but in the case of the IG's, the FDA had the food tested. And what concerns me about food(not just Nutro) is that Petco's distribution center just got busted for improper storage of pet food and the food was contaminated. There are just so many places to point the finger, and even if you trust the mfg of the food you feed, you have to worry about the storage. carronstar
I'm a coward when it comes to my girl. She was getting soft stools and throwing up bile on her last order of Nutro several months ago. I switched her to Evo/Innova and some Iams and there have been no problems since then. The Innova/Evo is a whole lot more expensive but absolutely worth the peace of mind. During the recall last year I switched to Newman's Organic and she happily ate that for several months then decided she didn't like it anymore. Guest LynnM
The thing with the IG's was pretty irrational. The dogs were poisoned by ethylene glycol. The food was specifically tested for EG, among other things, and it was negative. It doesn't take much EG at all to kill a dog that small. Like it or not, that lady's dogs got into some antifreeze. Guest gretzky
There have been a number of other threads about this same site. This is one website saying it is the Nutro, and has been saying it for a long time now. A site that is sponsored by Lawyers. A site that reviews all submissions for content before it is printed. I haven't looked in months, but the last time I looked there wasn't one post from anyone saying they didn't have a problem. Just playing Devil's advocate here. I don't feed Nutro, but it seems a little biased and one sided to me. How do we know these reports are actually coming from consumers or that opposing comments aren't just deleted? This site just seems suspect to me. If it has really been going on this long I would think some other credible sources would be taking the ball and running with it as well. Of course we all want what is best for our babies and you have to do what you feel is right.

My precious Flashy and BrookLynne were bringing up "horrible" bile almost every morning. I put them on Pepcid and was giving them a cookie in the middle of the night. Their poop was terrible so we made the switch. We now have awesome poops and no more bile! I don't really get into the politics of the Nutro issues...however I know that it did NOT agree with my babes. Quote Patti-Mommy of Lady Sophia 7-28-92 - 8-3-04... LaceyLaine 8-2-94-12-5-07... Guest SoulsMom
I know two people personally who dogs got sick after opening a new bag of Nutro. Vet could find nothing. One of the dogs went on a hunger strike. They never even considered it could be the food until I sent them a link to one of the discussions on GT. They switched to Taste of the Wild, and no more problems.

Guest VelvetEars
I have not fed Nutro in over a year. Mine, too, didn't seem to be doing well on it, so we switched to Nature's Recipe. That worked until they decided they didn't like it anymore. We've done 2 bags of Solid Gold, which was ok - the Barking at the Moon went over better than the Wolf one, and now we're trying Wellness. Just not sure what I want to feed right now. Trying to weigh cost with nutrition w/ ease of purchase (Petco carries the high end foods, but Petsmart is a mile away vs. 10 mi away for Petco). beledi
My dogs have nice shiney coats and Samlur has fur that feels like chamois. I think it is the tripe. My older Rottie, who died of cancer, was doing well eating the tripe when she did not eat much else. Samlur has nice clean teeth. I to read the article in the Whole Dog Journal. It does smell, but the dogs love it and seem to be doing well so I can cope. Edited June 27, 2008 by beledi Quote "Then God sent the Greyhound to live among man and remember. Guest Redpack
I've tried to switch because of things I've read here....I have spent a lot of money on more expensive foods and have had no success with any of the others. Some just caused flat out "D" and Blue Buffalo or Diamond or whatever it was made me feel llike I was cleaning up after a herd of buffalo, not dogs. Emmissary is currently eating Nutro again. I certainly would not feed it to him if it had an off smell or anything that looked grainy or as if it had bugs on it?!!! From what I have read, there seems to be concern in how the food was handled after leaving the factory. I hope I am right. Don't want anything to happen to Em.
