Guest maryvillesmom
If the x-rays are right, she has a bone spur. She has been on Rimadyl for 6 months and the blood work is fine. No liver damage. The only problem is she still limps. Yesterday and today it is bad enough to make her yelp (at night) when trying to get comfy. For the last month she has limped even with the meds. We have the vets home number but he is in Florida for 2 weeks, so I will wait til tommorrow and see if the fill in can see her. I just want to know what to expect, cant they file it off or something? It would also be cheaper then the rimadyl every monthand maybe she would be painfree ! Maryville was 8 in April.
Guest LynnM
We've had good luck here with meloxicam- generic of Metacam- available on the $4 formulary at WalMart and Target. The 7.5 mg tablets, cut in half, once per day, work better than Rimadyl for some dogs. Every dog is an idividual. Just like Naproxen works better for me, even though you may prefer ibuprofen. Sometimes you have to try a few to see what gives you the best pain control with the least or no side effects. Lynn
feemandvm
You could try adding Tramadol to the Rimadyl to see if that helps. You could also try Adequan injections. You could also see an orthopedic specialist to see if any surgical options exist or visit a specialist for acupuncture. I didn't know that generic metacam was on the $4 program... good to know! PatricksMom
tramadol has worked very well here for arthritis, and it's pretty affordable. Burpdog
At her age I'd consult on surgery to see if it will rid the problem. My last tramadol purchase at WalMart cost $4 Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
Guest LynnM
Yes, Dr. Bill... it works out to loading dose of 7.5 mg, then 3.5 mg SID for a 75 pound dog. It's a great option for larger hounds. Quartering the pills is a PITA for a smaller animal, but can be done. It's available as 7.5 mg and 15 mg tablets on either WalMart's or Target's formulary at $4 for 30 tablets. My vet didn't even know it existed in tablet form until I asked for the script... for humans, the brand name is Mobic. Tramadol is also on the $4 formulary at both pharmacies, also $4 for 30 tablets. PatricksMom
I didn't know tramadol was so cheap at Target--thanks Lynn! Quote Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). Guest LynnM
Check out both Target and WalMart's websites... find the link to the pharmacy and then the $4 formulary. Both are .pdf files, I think. Some of the meds on the list that are useful for dogs include: furosemide(Lasix) amoxicillin cephalexin ciprofloxacin smz-tmp enalapril benazepril meloxicam tramadol prednisone spironolactone metronidazole (Flagyl) metoclopramide (Reglan) promethazine amitryptiline fluoxetine neo/poly/dex ophthalmalic ointment Doxycycline is also on there, but for the amount that a dog would need for TBD's, it's generally cheaper to buy in bulk. I probably missed some, but those were the ones that jumped out at me from the list. Lynn
Burpdog
Generic doxy is around $22 at Costco per 100. Is it methocarbanol (muscle relaxant)? -- inexpensive at WalMart Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
Guest LynnM
It's not on the list, but is very inexpensive wherever you get it filled... it's even cheap at the vet. Lynn
