Guest PDMS06
Hi all! We have a 5.5 year old greyhound who's in great shape. Well, she could lose 5 lbs, but she's overall in good health. I was just wondering if we should give her joint medication or other vitamins to keep her bones healthy. Do you guys all give your dogs vitamins or is that just a marketing ploy to get dog owners to buy more "stuff" for their dogs? Thanks! Burpdog
I don't give vitamins at all. I start Fresh Factors at 7 or 8 along with vitamin E and fish oil. MSM around the same time. Depends on the dog. There should be no need for supplements unless there is a prior injury before 7 or 8 Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
Guest Ola
I think getting the extra weight off of her is the best thing you can do for her! 5 lbs to a grey is like 15-20 lbs extra for us, and it makes a difference in how much weight her joints have to support. NeylasMom
Hi all! We have a 5.5 year old greyhound who's in great shape. Well, she could lose 5 lbs, but she's overall in good health. I think losing those 5 lbs would be much more productive in terms of injury prevention than the joint supplements would be. Otherwise, I agree with Burpdog, not necessary yet unless you encounter a problem. I started Neyla on chondroitin/glucosamine around the age of 5, but that was after months of trying to get a muscle tear to heal. Honestly, not sure we needed to keep her on it, but I did. It's not a huge expense so I didn't see any harm in it. If you're not opposed to feeding some raw food, trachea, gullet, and chicken feet are all good natural sources of chondroitin/glucosamine that can be given as treats or meals. turbotaina
Apparently, Dr. Radcliffe is recommending joint supplements for any ex-racing dog just coming off the track, no matter what age. But yes, I agree with the others, get that extra weight off! Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury). Guest PDMS06
You guys are right. We'll work on getting that extra 5 lbs off. It should be easier now that summer is almost over and the heat and humidity is disappearing.
Burpdog
I like 5# over race weight. They drop that in 2 days of being sick. Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
