Does Anyone Use Advantage Multi On Their Hounds?

Recommended Posts

One of our adopter asked me about Advantage Multi for their Greyhounds. They said their vet is recommending it.

Honestly I don't know of anyone who uses Advantage, much less Advantage Multi.

So what do you think? Is is OK for Greyhounds??

Thanks,

Jennifer Watkins

Oh Oh Me Me

I use it on Mandy and Ester. Mandy is 10 and Ester is 7.

No problems. I have used it in June and July, and they are due RIGHT NOW for August.

It is a topical solution used for

heartworm prevention

kill fleas and infestation

treatment and control of hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms

Application is the tricky part. I put it on the dogs, then we go for a long slow walk, staying outside for at least 30 minutes before going back in the house. I don't have small kids at home, so at least I don't have to worry about that.

It has worked very well for us!

It appears under a year old, so I wouldn't use it.

Advantage Multi

Do not let this product get in your dog’s mouth or eyes.

Do not allow the dog to lick any of the application sites for

30 minutes. In households with multiple pets, keep each

treated dog separated from other treated dogs and other pets

for 30 minutes aft er application to prevent licking the

application sites. (See WARNINGS.)

We started using it on our two greys at the beginning of August. After treating them for hookworms for a year, using various meds and various timing, one of the dogs still has them. So our vet's parasitology professor from Cornell told him about Advantage Multi and was "very excited about it." No problem so far. Hopefully, a product like this that is used once a month will knock them out.

The executive director of my adoption group suggested this as an economical yet effective mode of treatment as well. Right now I'm debating if I want to switch from the frontline.

Both ingredients are safe and have been around for a long time. If if does what you want it to do (take care of fleas and heartworm prevention) and you like the method of delivery (topical), then it's worth a try.

I asked about it a few months ago and got no replies. We get it free from the drug reps at the vet clinic where I work. I decided not to use it. Too new, I'm not risking it, as both my hounds have special medical needs. I traded mine in on Interceptor. We don't have a flea problem, if I did I would use Advantage or Frontline.

Also, we have 3 cats, the kitten sleeps with the dogs, so that wasn't worth the risk either.

As it's a new product, I would definitely recommend waiting for a while to see how other dogs react to it. I remember that "once a year" heartworm shot that was supposed to be so great, until dogs started having bad reactions and some even died. It's never good to be the guinea pig in my opinion.
