My sweet boy Benjamin has developed some rather red paws in the last few weeks. He's always been a bit of a pink boy - being so white, when he exercises or it's hot he tends to flush on his belly and thighs, but it always fades away after an hour or so of cooling off (as a redhead with the same kind of issue, I have always totally related XD). When we first adopted him two years ago he had very pink paws for the first week or so, but from googling I put that down to his first proper exposure to bitumen/concrete sidewalks and sure enough it went away very soon after.
Anyway, fast forward to now, and I noticed he was licking his paws a bit and that they were starting to get a bit red and irritated looking. It started with his back two paws but now seems to be affecting all four of them. I wondered if it might be a grass allergy given it's spring here in Australia and lots of grass seed/pollen about (although we never had any issue last spring), so have started washing his feet with an oatmeal shampoo after walksies in the evening, and then applying an oatmeal moisturiser afterwards. I've been doing that for almost a week, and so far it hasn't gotten any worse, but nor has it really gotten better...
He doesn't appear bothered by it, he still enthusiastically wants his two walksies a day, isn't limping or avoiding his paws being handled and has proper appetite and everything, he just tends to lick his paws a bit more than normal, although he always stops when I tell him to.
I'll probably try and schedule a vet visit next week if they don't start looking better, but wanted to make sure I'm armed with as much info as possible, as greyhounds aren't that common in my area and not sure how much experience the vets will have with this issue. Any ideas what might be causing this and what questions I should ask? If it is a grass allergy how long should I give the oatmeal shampoo regime to work before I cross it off the list? Or any suggestions for a miracle cure please, cause I'm honestly stumped.
Attaching some photos that hopefully work. Thanks so much in advance
