  1. Poops 5-6 times a day? Is that due to the hookworms? My hound goes 2 times a day (morning walk 1 hour after meal and evening walk 1 hour after meal). How long will it take to get rid of the hookworms? The last check for my hound was at the adoption center.
  2. We adopted Marty Dec. 17th 2017. His racing wt. was 75 lbs. The day we left the adoption center he weighed 74.7 lbs. Jan. 2nd he weighed in at his wellness check up at 73.4 lbs. Our vet contributed this loss to be stress. Jan. 29th (yesterday) I took him to be weighed again and his weight was 72.2 lbs. We have been feeding him Pro Plan Salmon and Rice - 4 cups a day (2 cups AM and 2 cups PM). I take him out for walks 3x a day. Morning walk is a half mile, afternoon walk is a half mile to 1 mile, and evening walk varies depending on temperature half mile to a mile. On average though about 2-3 miles a day. Our vet recommend that we increase his food to 4.5 cups a day. We are going to try this for the next 2 weeks and if there is no weight gain then we will be getting a blood test done. I am hopeful this increase in food helps and we are able to get his wt. back up. I'm also considering changing his food - something that is more substantial in order to cut back on the amount of servings. Any suggestions?
  3. @NewGrey2017 Yes Im feeding kibble 100% of the time and take him out 1 hr afterward and hes pretty regular.
  4. @cleptogeey I never said anything about adding soft food and never will give soft food. I would prefer him having firmer stools but I am concerned about cutting back on adding water to his kibble in order to get firmer stools.
  5. Thanks for all the input. We are leaving the height as is due to my boy not having to bend too far or reach up.
  6. @Cleptogrey My boy is on Purina Pro Plan Salmon and rice as well. He gets fed twice a day - 2 cups kibble with 1 cup water added for his morning meal and the same for his evening meal. He has soft somewhat formed stools. I would prefer firmer healthier looking stools. Do you add water? If so how much? My main concern is that he does not drink enough water. He might drink a cup of water on his own for the entire day this is why I add 1 cup of water to each meal. Any suggestions before trying a different kibble?
  7. Single bowl feeder makes since. My boy never drinks water right before or right after eating - of course I always add 1 cup of water to his kibble anyway.
  8. I have the food and water bowls currently at 11in high. Is this too high? My wife is saying they need to be lower to around 8 inches.
  9. I dont know about allergy - that is what our vet mentioned. I think the infection is just from being in the track kennel and then being with all the other hounds at the track adoption center. His ear looks a whole lot better since being on the medication - looks very clean. The nose fungus shows no improvement so far but we still have 15 more days of meds with that issue.

  11. From the look of the photo maybe evaluate her for a concussion? LOL!!!!
  12. @cleptogrey. Our vet recommended giving Marty some raw green beans, carrots, broccoli, or colliflower mixed in with his food (not too much though to avoid gas) to somewhat help with teeth cleaning. Also, I have been adding a cup of water to his 2 cups of food for each feeding. I am just concerned he doesnt drink enough. I hope this is not too much water for the food? He does eat it all before it even has a chance to soak or even get soft.
  13. Well it looks like my boy is having irritation with his right ear. He keeps pawing at the right side of his face. (I kept thinking his eye was irritated because they have had a reddish tint to them ever since adoption day but I think its more to his skin tone because he has a pinkish skin color - hes mostly white with black spots.) Anyway the inside of his right ear is red + the medication drops Im sure doesnt feel good. I gave him 10mgs of Claritin as recommended by our vet to help. Hopefully this clears up in the next 6 days. I cant stand having him go through itching his ear/face.
  14. These dogs are so sweet and innocent - I just want to wrap them in bubble wrap...lol.
  15. I forgot my vet also prescribed Claritin for allergies. The vet called and she said in all her treatments using the Animax she has had no vomiting. The nausea must be from the stress of the doctors visit and car ride home. We are going to go ahead and administer another dose of the ointment this afternoon and if he vomits again though Im going to request the medication you used for Tessa - Gentizol.
  16. Well we adopted Marty on the 17th of this month and yesterday we took him to our vet for his wellness check up. Weight: 1. When he had his surgery (neuter) on Dec. 7th he weighed 74.7 lbs. His racing weight was 75 lbs. 2. He weighed in yesterday at our vet at 73.4 lbs. 3 Our vet said the wt loss can be contributed to the differences in scales used, stress from schedule changes and a new home. 4. I have been feeding him 4 cups of a combination of Diamond Hi Energy (adoption center food) and Salmon/Rice Purina Pro Plan Focus. Slowly weening him off of the Diamond. 5. Our vet said once he gets his weight back up to 75 lbs. she would like to see him down to 3 cups of food daily all depending upon physical activity levels. Ears: 1. Left Ear looked good. 2. Right Ear has a yeast infection. The doctor contributed that to an allergy/allergies. So I guess it's good that I'm changing his food to Salmon and Rice - our vet was perfectly fine with this food choice. 3. The doctor cleaned his ear really well and some brown/rust color debris came out. She prescribed Animax Ointment for treatment of both ears 1x per day for 7 days. 4. The medication she used at the office must have been stronger? He threw up when he got home. My wife researched it online and this is a side effect. 5. I called the doctors office this morning to inquire about the medication and if I should administer it today or possible change meds. I am still waiting to hear back from the office. Nose: 1. The bridge of Marty's nose has a brown rust spot/stain on it. I initially thought it was irritation from his racing/kennel muzzle. 2. Our doctor held a black light over the spot to check for fungus - she really couldnt tell so she snipped a little of the hair and held it closer to the black light. She saw a faint florescent color which indicated fungus. 3. She attributed this to the dogs sharing muzzles. 4. She prescribed Conzol 1%. 1 drop to be applied to the affected area for twice a day for 2 weeks and then once a day after that for 7 days. Every thing else check out just fine! We were there for 1.5 hours - visiting with our vet who has excellent bed side manner and took her time answering all out questions and gave our boy a thorough examination. Has anyone else dealt with these issues?
  17. What about using the seresto collar just for when I take him out of the house - or must the collar stay on 24/7 to be effective?
  18. Im a little bit concerned about putting chemicals on my new GH. I know I live in a state with high populations of fleas/ticks. From my research I have found that Frontline Plus is probably the best chemical/poison for my area? I know some owners give their dogs a bath once or twice a year. For me living in central Alabama I plan on giving my dog a bath at least once a month to try and stay ahead of these parasites. Should it be more durning the warmer months? Once a week? I really dont know the best way for prevention to keep my dog in the best health. Are chemicals/poisons a necessary evil? For those of you living in the south how do you handle this? I would love if I could just give baths on a regular basis without using poison.
  19. That Facebook page is insane. A lot of good ideas for transpiring.
  20. Thanks so much for the data link. The blood clots fine for 36-48 hours but will reopen after that time period - bruising will appear. This is why meds are given to sustain the clotting so the wound can heal.
  21. Kiowa Safe Marty “Marty” was neutered today and I was fortunate enough to meet with the vet. I was also able to observe the surgery, nail trimming, and teeth cleaning! Marty has a blood disorder but I was reassured by the vet he would be ok for any future surgeries as long as he has the proper meds pre and post op. He will be coming home Dec 17th!!! I can’t wait!! I would post a picture but I don’t know how.
  22. I would make sure your hound didnt eat snails. We rescued a cats and it seemed normal after a month with no issues then Symptoms included panting and coughing. The first vet diagnosed a lung infection and chronic asthma put on steroids. Then a couple of months later took the cat in for shots. At that check there was a rotating vet on duty - Dr Anne England. She questioned the steroids and looked at the X-rays. She said those are signs of lung worms - normally not seen in cats. She prescribed a new medication to clear up the worms. She has been our vet ever since going on 17 years now. After her diagnosis and educating us on snails I looked at our side walk driveway and road outside our house and sure enough I began to see tiny snail shells. Id get a second opinion.
  23. How do you know when to switch/try a different food - Poo consistency?
  24. I just wanted to see what the most popular food that forum members feed their GHs.
