  1. Just finished round #2 of the new protocol. She was starting to show signs of hooks again just before starting this round, but I didn't bother testing since we were starting within days. The new food has them all firmed up, and no adverse effects from the medicine this round so that has been a plus. It's nice being able to pick up with the rake and scoop instead of digging out the sod from underneath. Never again Diamond Naturals. Never again. And they tolerate the Advocate well enough. My last grey used to rash, so that is also a plus. I also ordered the cedar oil stuff. Thanks for the info LaFlaca. I hope it helps, but if not it should at least help with the other pests. Any improvement, no matter how small is still improvement, so I am optimistic. Thanks again to everyone participating in this thread.
  2. Good to know, thanks. I have a sprayer, so may just pick up the concentrate.
  3. LaFlaca, are you buying the ready mix or the concentrate and mixing it yourself? Does it say to keep the dogs off of it for any time or if you need to water it in (or avoid excess water)? Thanks. I am considering this.
  4. Avisher, yes we are, and I totally agree with you. And, if it helps, we are not alone in dealing with any of it -hooks, groups, whatever. Also.... Just to consolidate medication sources that have been posted earlier, and in other locations: Advantage Multi/Advocate supplier: https://www.petsupplyexpress.com/detail.htm?ProductID=330 $65 /6 pack for 55lbs and larger dogs -browse around if you need different. Merck Safeguard (fenbendazole) -same ingredient as Panacur: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HHLVB8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is a liquid suspension, for which you will need a measured syringe (usually free at a pharmacy if you ask politely for an oral medicine syringe [no needle]) -to get the correct dosage for dogs, this works out to 1.1ml per 5 pounds of dog (works out to 110mg fenbendazole /5lbs, same as the powder package dosage) so a 75lb grey / 5lbs = 15 15 * 1.1 = 16.5ml daily dosage (1ml = 1 cc, depending on how your syringe is marked) -I can do an 85 pound grey and a 60 pound grey on one bottle for three days with about 25% left over. -all for about $24. One eats it mixed with the food and the other takes it squirted (slowly) down the throat. Safeguard/Panacur powder packages: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FPH2FQ/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003WRHSJY/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER -you may need to mix the packages if you have a smaller greyhound. An 80 pound grey would take two boxes of the bigger dosage per course @ 2 envelopes per day, and a 60 pond grey would take one of each size box per course, with an envelop from each box per day. Works out to about $20 per three day course for a big grey. Drontal (Quad dewormer by Bayer): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IO8YMNK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 2 doses for a 60 lb grey (1 dose for an 80 pound grey with a half pill left over for the next round). $23 These are not the only sources, but are the ones that I have used/am using. Everything I am doing and how I am doing it is with the consultation and blessing of my vet.
  5. My young grey was in the same prison group as Turbo and Maverick and has the treatment resistant hook as well. My experience with her group is that they try to get the greys out the door as soon as possible, and they have no intention of accepting any responsibility once you accept the dog. They know. They are just perfectly willing to dump it all on you. I was hit with almost 2k in vet bills that I was told they would cover before her surgery (due to issues with their vet's spay job), and then got jerked around for 2 months with no reimbursement after the surgery. To my understanding, Mav's group usually offers a month of health insurance. Were you able to take advantage of that? I know two others from and earlier class and a later class at Hardee that also were hit with these hooks. Plus the inmate trainers told me they had problems specifically deworming one of those dogs, but that he had come in that way. The groups know there is a problem. The training program knows there is a problem. I'm sure the kennels know there is a problem. They choose to ignore it to keep their numbers up, then they hide behind the part of the adoption contract that says that you accept all responsibility after adoption. Both Turbo and Mav (and the other three dogs I mentioned) came from Derby before going to Hardee, but Mav came from a different kennel and breeder than Turbo. My hat off to Buddibear's group (and any others) who do take responsibility.
  6. Thanks for the heads up on this. I had already switched both my dogs to Eukanuba large breed after figuring out that it might be the food. After finding nothing on whether it could be from the Advocate, my wife pointed out that we had just opened a new bag of food when it happened. Both dogs, had softer stool than the one had at her worst with hooks. After switching food, the problem cleared as they transitioned. I did a 50/50 blend the first day, then 100% new after 3 days. I went from having to dig out the sod from under their poop (because of the hooks), to easily picking up firm poop in under a week. Paddy was on Eukanuba before, so I know he does ok with it, but Diamond was supposed to be such better ingredients. I wish these companies would keep screwing around with the food. Mars wrecked Nutro, which is why I put him on Diamond last year. Now Diamond gives them both colon blow. He eats grass when he is on Eukanuba which is why I put him on Nutro before this, so I will need to find a new food again. Eukanuba, Nutro and Diamond were the only ones that didn't give him soft stools. I called Diamond, but the person on their phone said no change to formula, and asked for the batch number and date, which I didn't have because I threw the bag away. I wonder if they are trying to avoid another recall. It's hard enough to battle these damn hooks without having to dig up the yard to pick up runny poop.
  7. Hi Buddy, are you in contact with the UF vets through your group, your group's vet, or is it your vet? After 2 months of clears, do you think it might be a reinfection? Someone here posted earlier about avoiding meet and greets and other GH events due to this hook issue. I imagine that the rest area out in front of Petco must be a hookworm breeding ground. they were soft up to the panacur, during the panacur and then the AdMulti, but about three days after the AdMulti, they went liquid. Since the topicals take three to 4 days to fully absorb, I was just wondering if this was common to the AdMulti.
  8. We switched over to Advantage Multi from HG+ for the new hook protocol, but b0oth dogs ended up with some serious runs after the Advantage Multi treatment, which was the day after the third Panacur dose. Is this from the AdMulti? They were soft already due to the hook, but a couple of days after the Advantage I had to start picking up their poop buy cutting out the sod underneath with a shovel.
  9. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. It hit home here for a number of reasons including our current battle with hooks. Sharing of information is so important, and thank you for doing so through this difficult time for you. This is a current thread related to these difficult hooks that a number of us are sharing info on: http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/322685-hookworm/page-5 I agree with NewGrey2017: "You sound like exactly the kind of people a greyhound deserves and vice versa."
  10. It looks like Soji raced her entire career at Sanford
  11. I am very sorry to hear about your Soji.
  12. One from palm beach in 2012 -no hooks, never had worms the whole time we had him, died of imuno-deficiency at 7 One from derby in 2015 at 75% of race weight and full of worms, 2 courses of panacur and worm free since One from derby in 2017 -dewormed at vetting and again in the prison program, still fighting hooks 4 months later There are many hookworm threads here, but the next most recent one to this is all about the difficulty in getting rid of these "new" hooks.
  13. Everything is better with butter. Just ask Bobby Flay.
  14. I have been using butter with great success. I started with a big blob and no pill to test the reaction, then a butter coated pill with a second blob in full sight as an incentive to inhale the butter covered pill. It works for my two every time now. They don't even chew, just swallow the "butter" Paddy comes running every time I make toast now It's tough once they get suspicious of hidden pills and treats. You may have to earn the trust back regarding treats/cheese with straight cheese for awhile. Their smell is so acute, once they recognize the drontal (or tramadol, or whatever they have decided on a bad association with), no amount of cheese will disguise it. I thought of butter because it is a sealer, lubricant and people food all in one.
  15. I also spoke with an acquaintance who adopted another prison dog from an earlier graduation date than mine, but from the same program. They also have been having a hell of a time with hooks since last summer. I know from speaking with the inmate trainer (I followed up with multiple trainers on multiple dogs for people when I was there), that this particular dog had to be dewormed multiple times while in the prison, and still all this time later, they are having issues. To me this doesn't sound environmental since that dog would have had hooks before, during and after its time in the prison. We had quite a few non prison dogs with hooks as well, that were just "treated and streeted". They all come from just a few of the same kennels.
  16. We are going to try a three week cycle with the Advocate, starting the day before the Panacur/SafeGuard, suspending the HG+ while doing so. I picked up a 125 ml bottle of liquid safeguard for under $25 and converted the mg/ml by my dog's weight to 13ml/dose (1300mg). It will be enough for all three courses (9 doses). We will retest after the three courses, unless we have any reason to speed things up. So far the other dog appears clean. Poops get picked up as soon as they hit the ground. I am debating getting another fecal done just before we start the next course on the 27th. So far: Drontal+ -week 1 (after indications of worms) HG+ -week 2 (things improving by this dose) Drontal+ -week 4 HG+ -week 6 Test positive for hooks -week 6.5 Drontal+ -week 7 (things improve after this dose) The Drontal dosing was on three week intervals relative to the start date. The HG+ dosing was on the regular 1st of the month schedule. Moving forward, starting 4-27: Day 1-Advocate, day 2-Panacur, day 3-Panacur, day 4-Panacur, Repeat every three weeks from start date for a total of three courses Retest If clear, I will likely stay on the Advocate until all 6 tubes are used up then switch back to HG+ if my other grey manages to stay clean through all this.
  17. He was open to the prison training regime, but on a three week cycle because it better matches the hook life cycle. I used Drontal on Saturday, but he suggested switching to Panacur starting three weeks from last Saturday for three courses of three days, 3 weeks apart. He said the switch to Advantage Multi would be ok, but didn't know if it would work better than HG+. He didn't think that the Advantage Multi has to be given at the same time, since the theory is that the effect has to build up to a steady state anyway. He is of the mind that a sufficient dose of Panacur is more effective than Drontal due to the three day course of treatment. He did recognize that there is an issue with hooks and greys that seems to be relatively new in the last year. He sees enough greys to have already noticed this. Overall, he didn't say much that was different from what your vet and vet friends have said, although he wasn't leaning toward environmental in this case. In better news, we had a firm, blood free stool tonight.
  18. My older grey is on HG+ and is so far hookworm free. I'm hoping that once the larval leak cycle is broken, the new one can go back on HG+. I will know by then if Paddy is still hook free that the HG+ does still work. i forwarded your pdf from the prison program about the advantage multi and drontal combination to my vet and we have a call set up for Monday to discuss. He has recognized that the hooks lately seem much more resilient, so this may help him as well for future strains at his practice. Meanwhile, Dronatl regime started again today, and will likely add in the Advantage Multi when it comes in. I think that is wise on two fronts. First to avoid new infestation, and second to prevent spreading from your own dogs if they have it. My group seems to want to bury anything health related and just pass on the problems to the adopters. That will make the problems worse, not better.
  19. Thanks for all contributing to this post. I have ordered the Advantage Multi and am just waiting on the vet to call back to set up a treatment schedule.
  20. Our little one just tested positive again for hooks. She had hooks in the prison, and was dewormed there (so they told us). She has been on Heartguard Plus since we got her, but was dewormed with Drontal+ in late Feb, then HG+ on March 1st, then Drontal+ mid March (3 weeks), then HG+ again April 1st, then on the 4th she had a loose stool with blood and I could see a tiny worm moving in it. Brought it in and sure enough -hooks. She hasn't been anywhere but some adoption group events in December and the vet's in Dec (when we got her), Jan and Feb. Our other grey has been on HG+ since we got him and is worm free still. He was full of worms when we got him (and about 75% of his race weight), but three days of Safeguard and then onto HG+ and he has been good for two years. This definitely doesn't seem like the same hooks.
  21. Interesting posts about treatment resistant hook worms. I wonder if track closures out west have resulted in some of these dogs getting relocated to Florida and bringing the Panacur proof hook worms with them. My group has had more problems with hooks in the last year than they were before. We used to just do one treatment of Safe-Guard and were good. Now my vet suggested Drontal for the first time because he said it was working better. My small grey seemed to have more side effects, but both were lethargic and seemed a bit off the next day.
  22. Over on the left coast. Tampa Bay area. After kicking the Timmy's monkey off my back, I have satisfied my addiction with McDonalds coffee. Easier to attain around here, plus I don't have to risk winning one of those Pontiak Azteks just from buying a coffee.
  23. That's a really good price if it is the same as the diamond naturals chicken and rice. We are on the lamb and rice, but also just got hosed by amazon since we don't have prime. pet food Warehouse carries it and they are just around the corner, but they are pretty expensive. I might check out Chewy too.
  24. Hi all! I have been lurking here since last year, but strangely enough it was a roll up the rim thread that actually got me to post for the first time. That done, I thought that I should make it official and say hello! We have a couple of greys at home right now, with one grey at the bridge, and about half a dozen fosters have been through here over the last 7 years. I'll try and get something happening for photos since PS doesn't work anymore.
  25. We just used Drontal on our new dog and the next two poops were messier. Not sure if is a reaction to the medicine itself, or the worms being killed off and cleaned out.
