  1. Bella is allowed on anything, but needs to move when we ask her. We're still working on waiting to be invited up, but honestly, it's not a big deal. She always gets off when we ask her to, and I figure, it's her house, too. Besides, there's dog hair all over everything whether she sits on it or not, so might as well let her enjoy!

  2. This is great. For a minute I swore you had gotten pictures of Bella - she's got about the same amount of baldness. She's been started on melatonin, too, so we'll see. (1) 3mg pill per day. I give it in the morning - the first time I gave it to her at night we couldn't get her to wake up and go potty and then had an anxious houndie at 4:45 the next morning! :lol

  3. Oh, she's DEFINITELY thinking "Entertain me, Woman!". Didn't you know, that's what our greys think we humans are here to do? :lol:lol

Bella doesn't get near that much exercise - it really depends on the day. Most days she probably gets a total of an hour to 90 minutes walk, maybe a little zoomie time in the hallway, and on weekends we'll often take her around to whatever we're doing so she's active most of the day. Right now she's zonked out on her bed.

We do make sure she gets Kongs during the day and has something to chew on to keep her entertained. For her, she needs something to do or attention more than physical activity, so when she's board she'll collect our slippers and whatever else she can pick up and gather into her crate. She'll walk around seeing what she can pick up - anything from the tv remote to the dustbuster :P

  4. We are struggling with this as well, except Sundae tends to get us up 2 times a night.

We have tried PJ's and that didn't work.....I have told her to lay down, but that only buys an extra hour.

Sundae is in her cage all day while we are at work. The way I justify it in my head is that she holds it all day when she is in there, so when she is a free pooch, she wants to go more frequently. I know......weird, but it is what gets me through the wake up calls!

    Good luck!

After about a week with Bella, we started having the same issue. I was advised by several people that she may just be testing us, unless it's a medical issue. We had a vet appointment anyway, so she was thoroughyly checked out and nothing was wrong. She went back into her crate at night with the door closed, and the first time she whined at an ungodly hour, the squirt gun was employed. Only had to use it two nights in a row and she got the message just fine. Now we keep her crate door open at night (with the bedroom door closed) and she doesn't make a peep until she's aware that one of us is awake.

So - rule out medical issues first, then know it may be a test or asking for attention on her terms.

    Good luck!

PS - excuse any spelling errors - I can't see the whole message I'm typing so hard to go back & correct :)

  5. Just one side note on a crate, if you do end up purchasing – I bought ours through PetEdge. We got a Midwest that folds flat for storage & carrying, and it was under $100 including shipping. Came very, very quickly, too.

Have also seen them on eBay for under $80 including free shipping, for new ones.

    Good luck!

  6. Bella has been great, but has recently started a new trend. She will pick up anything that she can fit in her mouth (books, remote controls, flip flops, compressed peat disc, measuring cup for her food, etc) and bring it to her crate. MOST things she won’t chew, but she’s started shredding anything paper, including *ahem* a library book. :angel She hasn’t started in on shoes other than a $5 flip-flop that I caught before she really chewed it, and the rubber doorstop by the front door.

She’s not interested in chewing HER things, of course, like her stuffies (which she just carries around from one bed to another) or rawhide bones.

Most things she leaves alone once she’s gotten a “leave it” or similar, but the paper shredding concerns me. We’d like to get to the point where we can leave her crate door open during the day, but definitely can’t at this point – it’s not a matter of her doing all of this while we’re gone, she does it while we’re there. Of course, she’s only been home 3 weeks, so I’m sure it’ll take more time.

Any suggestions on other things that can be hers to chew on? I’ve seen suggestions to other posters with related problems to use the muzzle, too.

We’ve tried a couple of different dental chews but she gobbles them up and then gets the big D, so those are out. She gets a stuffed Kong during the day, but those don’t last all day. Side note - I did try a new technique for today so we’ll see - soaked some kibble and stuffed that, oatmeal and peanut butter in the Kong, then froze it.

She gets lots of exercise and play time, and lots of attention when we’re home, so not sure what the fixes would be.

    Thanks!

  7. My husband and I both work full time, so walks in the moring and lots of time & attention on the evening and weekends. Bella seems perfectly content with this, as long as we leave her with a Kong and now that she knows we're coming home for her.

  8. I do believe we're starting to make some progress, Mr. Badger and I. He's started lying on the beanbag chair and deliberately pointing his head toward me and wiggling until I pet him. Then last night we were both on the beanbag watching tv, and this was the scene when I forgot to keep up my steady petting of his head:

"Did I say you could stop? No, so get stroking or I shall nibble on you some more!"

Later, when I was sitting at my desk, which abuts the beanbag, I propped my foot on the edge of the beanbag and got this, completely spontaneously, from him:

It made me think of Wall-E wanting to hold hands with Eve. *melt*

    :rollin

Awwwww...... that just melted my heart!!! SO adorable.

Hang in there - we're seeing little changes with Bella (KT Britta) almost every day. It's really fun to see her grow and seem to figure out that we're her people and this is her home. Any bets on when she feels comfortable that it's HER couch and HER bed, too?

  9. OK, you all have convinced me about chipping. I’m paranoid about Bella slipping her collar, so we keep her tags on a separate collar, which we put below the martingale collar (so that if she slips that collar it won’t pull the other with the tags off). Since we currently live in a big apartment building with an elevator, even if she slipped out the apartment door she could only go down the hallway, but looking toward the future, who knows where we’ll live.

  10. lol - ok, I get the hint on pictures :) I'll work in it, but I do have few up on my blog - greytdays.blogspot.com

Welcome! Where in NYC are you? I'm across from the Planetarium and Central Park is at the end of the block. Aquitaine loves new friends...

    Hi! We're in Hell's Kitchen - 43rd & 11th
  11. Hello, I'm Sara, and I have a greyhound problem. We’ve had our (first) grey all of two weeks and we’re addicted. Our girl is the best, smartest, funniest, most wonderful grey ever to walk the earth. Oh – wait – you all say that? Hmmm…..

Meet Bella, a five-year-old black female. She’s adapted amazingly quickly to life in the big city – we took her to a picnic in Central Park this weekend and people wouldn’t believe that she’d only been with us for two weeks.

Thrilled to be on Greytalk – have been reading some of the posts for a while and finally joined. Thanks for all of the advice already!

    Sara
