  1. We had very similar issues happening to our greyhound, Telly, that started a couple of months ago.

Turns out she developed flea bite dermatitis, :ohno which we quickly got under control by changing her flea meds, which certainly brought almost immediate relief. However, we also felt that there could be an underlying problem with potential food allergies too, so we decided to switch her to a salmon based, grain free food (Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream) and now the "itchies" are viturally gone, her fur is growing back in where she was chewing (poor thing!) and is much softer and shinier than before! :yay We have also been using Vet's Best Hot Spot Spray, while her skin has been healing, it is an all natural spray with tea tree oil and chamomile and have had no problems with it.

Where did you get the "hot spot spray". Garth has a couple itching spots and I thought it was the weather changing...

  2. I agree with tbhounds regarding using the large animal liquid ivermectin as HW preventative. The often recommended dose of 0.1 cc/10 lbs is a much higher dose than needed and can be toxic to some dogs. I posted more detailed info in this thread. Just want to make sure that those who decide to go this route are aware of the risk, especially since there are many here who also have other breeds.

To answer the OP's question, Iverhart is fine. It's a generic that has the same active ingredients as Heartgard.

Just to understand, Iverheart is a generic of Heartguard so I do not have to mess with "dosages" and other issues - it's a pill and it's safe. I am very concerned about safety (first) and effectiveness (second). My money situation is beyond horrible right now and if this is good then I'll use it if not I'll figure a way to do heart guard and the stupid blood test to get the heartguard.

    Thanks!

  3. Hate to say it ,but back to the C R A T E,if not medical

I think you are right about the c.r.a.t.e. when I am gone (rare evenings when I have a dinner or movie event).

Maybe when you're gone all day he just sleeps and so he can hold it longer than when you're there and he has to follow you to get a stamp and follow you to get a drink and follow you when you go to the bathroom etc. . .(I swear some days when I'm home I feel like I'm leading a little parade through the house!). I suspect that when nobody is home mine just lay in one spot most of the day, but not so much when I'm there.

    Who knows? just a thought. . .

I agree with this as well. But what is the solution? Perhaps it is taking him out sooner than I would when I am gone. But by this behavior, he is "controlling" our world.

By the way he is not spraying - he's really going.

  4. Garth, my love, has this negative behaviour and it is just breaking me.

About a year ago I fostered a beautiful big boy for 2 weeks before he went to his new home. Garth started peeing in the house after 3 years of very good behaviour.

Well the foster went and no new fosters have come in. Garth continues to pee. It happens in the afternoon and just before the last walk of the night. Today, I was working from home all day, it happened at 4 pm and just now at 9 pm.

We went for a 30 minute walk (our 2nd walk today) at 10 am. I was not paying attention and at 4 pm I heard him pee in the house. We went out immediately and I fed him dinner. Well, it's 9 pm and I was watching TV and about to turn off the tv to come upstairs and take him out. Bam - he did it again.

I am so mad. This happens almost once or more times per week and it is ruining my floors and making me very very upset.

We go for walks all of the time. We spend all of our weekends together if possible. I am home more often now. This just has to stop.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions to correct his behavior. Garth routinely goes 7 or 8 hours during the day after I leave for work so there is NO reason he cannot make it between 10 and 4 pm.

This is NOT a medical issue it's purely behavioral.

    Thanks.

  5. Wayne has a solution to your problem without the use of drugs. Move that boy out here to the desert, we don't have storms here :lol

    Problem solved!

I so wish that was an option. He would love the desert.

Melatonin or Benedryl are both safe to use for storm and anxiety phobias. I have used both but I think I prefer the melatonin. I find it just takes the edge off so Molly is not barking her head off. What I have I bought at the Dollar Store and it is 3 mg. I give one or two and it's just enough for Molly. If it gets really bad I give her one at a later time. She is about 54 lbs. and is 8 yrs old.

I'm not sure what a maximum dose is that you could give.

Ok. I will email vet and check with her. I read that several GTers had good luck with it and wanted to get some for next round of storms I'm sure we'll be having. Thank you.

Lee Lee used to be very storm-phobic when he came to live when me. Another thing I found that helped him was to put a t-shirt on him. It helps cut down on the static electricity in the air.

I do hope you find an answer. It's so hard to see them all worked up like that. :grouphug

I keep forgetting about the t-shirt idea. GREAT POINT - thank you!

  7. I know I probably missed 30 posts on this subject 2 weeks ago.

Garth really freaked out over 4th of July. I was thinking of getting some Melatonin. Has anyone had luck with it. Garth is approx. 75 pounds. How much is correct amount.

Will call vet but wanted the experienced minds at GT to weigh in. Thanks.
