Ellie has had a small bump on her rear leg up near her hip. so last week I took her into the vet for the annual physical and to set up a dental for her. The vet looked at the bump and did a needle aspiration and what came out was not just fat cells. He says it looks like a skin cancer lesion. Friday when she is under for her dental he is going to remove the bump and sent it off to pathology. The vet should be able to cut and get a clear margin. I was told she would have a pronounced scar,b ut rather have a scar then to lose a leg or worse.

sometimes my girls get a wild hair and will next like there is no tomorrow. So I went to a couple of the local thrift stores and bought a couple of cheap comforters and have them on top of the dog beds..life is good for them

Welcome from Greg and the Girls of the MFH...That's Magic Foster House...not, well, you know..

The best dog food is whatever your houndies do best on. My two girls do well on Nature's Domain from Costco. But that is just my girls. I would say try a few and see how your pups handle it i.e. energy-wise, poop production and consistency, how their coats look. Every hound is different.

Is it just me, or is she a tiny little thing?? But oh so cute

Well, when it rains it pours don't it.
This past Saturday, I finally got a chance to take Tessa for a real walk and not just let her run in the backyard. We stopped to leave some pee-mail. It was very reddish-brown. So off to the vet today and Tessa was kind enough to pop a squat in the waiting room. The techs got their sample alright. The vet got the dip-stick test and without sending the sample out for a full lab panel he feels Tessa is with a UTI and/or bladder infection. Got a script for Augmentin and it's amazing the price difference from place to place.
It's true what they say about Costco pharmacy, they are the spot to go to. For 20 500mg tablets it's just over $20. Fry's pharmacy wants around $40 and Walgreens wants almost $60. So it does pay to shop around.
If this doesn't clear up Tessa in about 5 days we go back and get another sample and send out for a more thorough work up. I think she will be fine, she still has her energy, appetite, and is drinking like normal. She still wants to get in the front seat and help me drive

I have this one: http://www.entirelyp...doorlarwht.html
It even has a picture of a greyhound on it! I think it's 11 inches... not sure if these fit sliding doors.
Doggie doors make all the difference in housetraining. I'll never go without one again.
I was looking for one made for a patio door with the nice glass and shiney frame...But one for my greyhounds was going to run $300+
So, I got one, like the one on your link, which is made to be put into a regular door from Home Depot for $70. It's 13 1/2 wide by 23 tall. Spent $30 for a 3/4 inch think sheet of finished plywood and then cut out the opening. That way I could make my own height for the rise. Which is a 4in rise making the height a total of 27 inches. The hounds can breeze through with minimal bending down.
I use a metal bar as my lock to the patio door. Now I just need to do a little staining and Thompson's water sealing on it and good to go..hmmm $300+ or $100...I pick B your Honour..

This morning after a breakfast of ice cream, a cheeseburger, and half a glazed doughnut I took my Bijou to the vet to send her over the bridge to join my hearthound Isis.
She had trouble standing and had lost another pound in a week. We laid down on a rug in the office and Bijou took her favorite position on the floor, leaning against my thigh and using my shin as her pillow. Her way of saying "give me some thigh rubs".
The vet gave her a sedative and then the final shot. I was talking to her and she let out a deep sigh and fell asleep then quietly cross the Bridge to join Isis in the Sunshine and cool grass.
I remember the day this deep blue girl just shy if 2 years old came bounding into my home and her and Isis proceeded to entertain and educate me. For the next 12 years, Bijou was my four legged disposal. I don't think she ever had a food she didn't like. Always at my plate giving me "those" eyes which I could never say no to. Even as I type this I keep expecting her to come over to the chair and bump my hand with her needlenose.
Bijou, you had a long full life. You were with me in my ups and downs and I was there for yours. No matter what the future has set in my path, I know that I can always look up and see you making sure I don't do anything too stupid.
Love,
Your Daddyman

I've been free feeding for years, Sometimes I let the bowls be empty for a while because I think Tessa and Ellie ( turned into a sausage with legs ) might hog it. This past year I have kept it pretty much full at all times so maybe Bijou would eat more. but now that I am going to be losing Bijou I would like to go to a scheduled feeding time and limiting the amount. Has anyone gone from free feed to a structured feeding schedule and how well did the pups adjust the first week or so?

It's the pure or high percentage cocoa chocolate you gotta worry about. And yes, probably upset tummies and puddles o poo for a bit.. and them sad eyes looking at you wanting more of the good stuff again

What I feared but knew was inevitable I now have to face.
I took Bijou to the vet because of mass weight loss and her hind end getting weaker and weaker. She weighed in at barely 40lbs, down from almost 60lbs 2 years ago. The vet gave her a good going over her temp was up a little and her breathing was a little labored. At almost 14, the vet and I discussed options for her. She is basically skin and internal organs. As he put it, you don't die because of age you die because your parts just wear out. And it looks like Bijou's parts have worn down. If she was 8 or 9 then mass bloodwork and all kinds of test would probably help but the vet feels that it would not help Bijou at this point in her life. She has increased urinating and drinking more water, has more weakness in her hind end, nothing but runny poo no matter what I have done to firm it up, and her energy level has gone to almost nothing.
We decided that best thing for her would be make her as comfortable as possible. I have Thursday and Friday off next week, so even though I don't want to let her go, it would be better for her to help her cross the bridge. I have some meds to keep her fairly pain free. She is going to get everything and anything she wants to eat between now and then.
I remember bringing her home 12 years ago. Her and my angel Isis were inseparable up to the day I had to let Isis cross the bridge. Now she will soon be joining her partner in crime in the sunshine over the bridge.

Sending lots of good thoughts. Will she eat boiled chicken?
She still eats anything and everything..

Ever since the start of the year, Bijou has been losing weight. And her hind end has become less stable over the months. At almost 14 years old it may just be age. She now looks like one of those seized dogs from animal control. She still has that spark in her eyes and appetite. However over the last week and a half whatever goes in, comes out liquid. Called the vet and Wednesday afternoon I am taking her in to get bloodwork done and taking a "sample" in for testing as well.
Being a desert dweller and all the dust storms we have had the last 4 months, I want to rule out Valley Fever (which I don;t think it is since she still will come hover over my dinner plate ) It's getting harder and harder to see her wasting away and I know I need to think with my head and not just my heart. She has been my baby for the last 12 years and I know that the inevitable is approaching. I just want to make sure it is age doing this and not some medical issue that we can fix.

I see they are having trouble settling in..

I just put it on top of the food or they have been known to eat it right off the spoon

It has helped with the gas for mine. And I always get yogurt when I get a new foster. They are so stressed and the bacteria in the yogurt helps with the intestinal flora..But you have to be careful, you give them too much and it's runny poo. I usually give mine a couple of tablespoons. One in the morning and one in the late afternoon.

Good news for Mr. Bullitt...now get home and play the sympathy card as long as you can..

Once a foster I had was really freaked with our sudden monsoon storms. They come up so fast the Benedryl was useless. At first I would put her on the bed with me so she could curl up against me. That helped a lot. But then I would take a t-shirt I was wearing and put that on her. Between the t-shirt and my scent on it, the thunder didn't bother her as much. As long as she could see me and I was calm she was good to go.
